Coins Really?

By X Wing Nut, in X-Wing

I look forward to winning a coin, then when I fall in to a deep depression - smoking 30 deathsticks a day and drinking heavily to forget about the 'old war' I'll be able to pass it off as a coming in a vending machine...

I've yet to see a vending machine that would take one of those coins, they are frigging enormous.

E: and I covet them. I'm really hoping to pick one of the 2016 store champs top four ones in the coming months. So nice.

Tbh I like neither the coin nor the medals. All of them I've won so far I gave away to somebody from the lower ranks who didn't get as many goodies.

Same goes for dice bags. I mean there's so much stuff to carry (damage deck, pilot cards, ships, tokens, obstacles, rulers, dials, bases, ...) that I have a storage solution anyway, why would I need a seperate bag for those 10 dice? If I put them into the bag it will even take more space than it would otherwise.

Wouldn't mind actually if they'd leave them away and would add more tokens or cards instead.

/rant off :D

The coins are definitely better than the medals.

And honestly, my first thought of someone walking into a tournament with a vest full of x-wing medals isn't "I'm intimidated"...it's "That guy's a d*****bag."

at least coins are in a military tradition

Well, for Americans, apparently. The rest of the world is just left a little confused.

Surely medals are more of a military thing - or is it that coins are more for the common soldier than just for a handful of exceptional cases?

Hate to go against my buddy OP but, really, coins/medals really mean the same thing. We got better things to complain about... like will the Australian navy allow the boat carrying these tournament kits in to port or will the crew get detained and sent to Nauru along with those precious coins..

Having said that both the coin and medal are made of metal \m/ Pure metal. so hevvi.

i need a coin so i can get free drinks at the LGS when I "Coin check" folks.... :) Those energy drinks can get expensive!!

The history of challenge coins and how they were used and the games played with them always made me see these as tools of distraction to keep people happy then as a reward of some kind. The challenge/games seem like childish games kids play.

but its OK I've now I found a solution in the way of a cordless drill and some ribbon.

defacing a challenge coin makes in no longer legal for "Coin checks" ... and drilling a hole in it is considered defacing it.. just so you know when you try to coin check folks.. lol

It's more a: "Aw man, look at him: So cuuute...!" ^_^

Right now I plan on using my store champ one as an Emp Token when i fly the palp shuttle / decimator.

The real tragedy is the loss of the dice bags...

Those things were the worst, no one even wanted them at the tournaments I went to.

It's ok I heard FFG plan to release coin bags soon

First off: don't wear your X-Wing medals. Just don't. Not even to play X-Wing.

Second: if you're determined to ignore me and wear medals anyway, wear your coin like a medal. You don't even have to drill a hole in it. Some double-sided foam tape will keep it on the ribbon securely and not deface the coin if you decide to take it off later.

Third: Don't wear your X-Wing medals. Seriously.

I'd much rather the coin than a medal. Who would actually genuine wear an X-Wing medal?

Me.

Walking into your FLGS to play a tournament with 15 of them pined to your jacket making a jingle jingle sound as you do. talk about Intimidation

Really though doing that isn't intimidation...just kinda a **** move.

Is there a differences? :P

and why is displaying your medals a **** move anyway?

I see it a wearing them with pride. :D

It is arrogance.

And yeah, it can be intimidating especially to a new player. Which is totally the community and attitude we want to be fostering.

We don't wear medals because we support Chewbacca.

X wing medals? Seriously..... come on who is going to wear that anywhere?

Coins ... eh ... but I guess you can collect them for fun.

The coins are 10,000 times more cool than some ridiculous medal that no one in their right mind would ever wear.

If someone is intimidated by some nerd wearing a bunch of star wars medals than they have more serious problems they should be addressing...

It's a military thing and just as thematic as medals are as prizes go.

I have a shelf full of my military coins at home.

Challenge coins are really great, I have several that were issued in honor of the War of 1812 with the USS Constitution on each side, really kind of neat.

^ this and I think people are missing the sarcasm in intimidation. In my area all know I have won many tournaments, a store champ, won regionals and made top 8 at nationals and no one is intimidated. Walking into a games store with all my medals pined to my jacket and my regionals trophy hanging around my neck on a gold chain would only make people think wow if that guy can do so can I.

When I first started playing this game there were a few at my FLGS that won every tournament while I lost every game. Back then I was never intimidated by them. Instead all I wanted to do was get better at this game to beat them and take my place at the Emperor's side. Still working on that bit.

would you tell that to an Olympic athlete? I see this Game a one of my sports winning medals is apart of it

I've a few medals and recently picked up a challenge coin from a SC and I have to say....I'm happy with this change!

A winter, summer or spring kit X-Wing tournament is far from being the Olympic though... it's okay to be proud to win a tournament at your FLGS playing with some plastic toys, but come on, it's nothing compared to Olympics...

Even Olympic athletes don't wear their medals everywhere they go. And they're too big to pocket. I bet they'd love something smaller that would travel better so they can show it off on the fly for free drinks.

As for "nothing compared to the Olympics"... pfft.

The only Olympic events I watch are Triathlon and Curling. The two ceremonies are also a must watch. But any game of X-Wing is a great watch on stream or in person.

X-Wing > Olympics

Also, running really fast is cool for a minute, but what do you do with that skill once you're done competing? Work at Enterprise car rental if the commercials are any indication (they hire all the college athletes, lol).

Tactical war games take brain skills. You can do a lot with brain skills outside of tactical war games.

Not sure I'll make a second SC this year so I hope to find the coin on Ebay for a non-ridiculous amount.
