TIE Phantom, revisited and updated.

I can't let it go....no measly tuning of decloak actions will deter me. I...must....phantom.

It has been a long time and a lot of things have been released or are about to be.

I am interested in any thoughts on new phantom combinations.

Crew?upgrades? Squadmates?

Agent kallus seems to be the fun new phantom crew but in general they're still wicked good if you're good. They're just not easy mode anymore. I'd imagine an experienced phantom player could still do serious damage with the old whisper, fcs, acd, vi, crew of choice build.

People always love the new hotness. When Cloak and MOV changed Phantom and PWTs were abandoned in droves even though hardly anything changed beyond those lists going from way OP to sorta OP.

People are punks.

Sensor Jammer with Kallus seems to pop up here and there.

Phantoms are still good however I don't foresee them becoming great again until they get a decent imperial crew that synergies well with them. Even something as simple as an imperial chewbacca type crew would make phantoms much more survivable and he isn't even that popular. But some defensive oriented ability would eventually help them. I just don't think it's really needed right now. They are still decent.

I love my Phantoms, they've served me very well and I plan to take them to a few tournaments this month.

I still see 1+ Whisper at every tournament ever. Remains a really strong ship... tempted to say "top 10" but I haven't actually thought it through, so I'll hedge my bets with "top 10 unique pilots".

I wonder how Ten Numb W/ calculation and an Ion cannon would do to a phantom.

Even something as simple as an imperial chewbacca type crew would make phantoms much more survivable and he isn't even that popular.

He would be on a Phantom.

The lowest PS Phantoms were always good and have been changed the least by the tuning, because they are still likely going to decloak, and then move, in nearly that order. They are at an advantage in that they are PS 3, so predator won't work on them and they'll shoot before many TLT swarms. You can fit 4 of them in a list, and really tear some stuff up. The possibility of decloaking forward gives you the ability to sort of doing a 7-K-turn by surprise, so you may be able to sneak 4 4-Attack ships behind your opponent on round 2 if they move fast enough. Really a very good ship.

Downside to this is that then you have a really fat z95 in terms of survivability so it seems easy to lose a lot of good points from just a few bad greens.

Maybe instead of echo...build the low p.s. phantom similarly, with the Intel agent.

And speaking of trying non-ACD ideas. Maybe engine?

Maybe tie mk2 and ptl on whisper?

This thread is inspiring me to bust out the Phantoms more. My main concern would be the stress meta giving them a hard time with ACD, but they have to catch you first, so CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Also in a randomly tangentially related note I wonder how different things would be if decloaking was an action rather than an automatic thing when it it. My guess is it'd be mega broken but I don't really know.

I think whats interesting is the idea of breaking out of the " must have ACD " mindset.

And I am particularly curious to think of ways to make the decloak change an unexpected benefit.

Surely there's a way.

I'm not saying the ship is weak or broken or nerffed or none if that.

I'm saying ,enough time has gone by that I think there's ....something...interesting...somewhere.

I actually think it wouldn't be all the great expect for maybe Echo. You would lose a lot of action economy. Or you can just run advanced sensors and be like a pre-nerf phantom. No attack dice modification though.

Agent Kallus is pretty good on a Phantom against 2-3 ship builds. He gets worse and worse the more ship your opponent brings. He's nearly useless against +5 ships. I'm curious to see what the crew in Imperial Aces does.

I was more thinking with push the limit and advanced cloaking device you could get some weird things where you shoot, cloak, push to decloak, and have moved 2 straight in a direction during the combat phase. Maybe still bad but certainly an interesting thought experiment.

Even in lists with lots of ships there is still a most valuable target.
