Bad Dice Rolls

By Rogue Thirteen, in X-Wing

Just played a couple games with my buddy Kam. The first one (100 point game), I beat him pretty soundly. I was able to get behind him and that was all she wrote even though he took out my Poe.

The second game, though. We played 200 point lists for sh*ts and giggles and he really out flew me but the dice were not on his side. I ended up beating him with all my pilots still alive. I actually felt bad for trouncing him so badly.

Dice cancer happens, that's what Aces have tons of tokens and re-rolls for

and generics have extra guns for that.

Dice cancer CAN happen and WILL happen, randomness, sadly, is a part of the game.

It got to the point where I was rolling 3-4 hits and generally at least two evades nearly every time. If I didn't he was rolling all blanks or had spent his Focus trying to lessen my impact. It was ugly.

Just TOed a tournament this past Sunday where my dice was horrible. Only messed up twice in flying yet they weren't game changers. My omega leader had a 5 defense dice roll and still rolled 4 blacks and a focus without a token. Actually why I stopped playing Soontir. Did a 5 die back to back blanks.

On that one match with Omega Leader after I got down to 1 hull my lucked change and I was rolling hot.

In the end it's a dice game.

Yeah this weekend I was at an event where the first game I won comfortably as my dice were super-hot. Next few games, not so much...

Played a game with my friend. He was desperately trying to shoot down a TIE-Bomber that ended up in the middle of his formation. Ten Numb, Wedge, Biggs, Range 1-2, Target Locks, overall about 18 dice rolled. No hits. And I don't mean good evade rolls by the Bomber - no, he literally rolled not a single hit result. It was the most ridiculous situation ever.

My first game at the weekend, my dice were hot as hell. A resounding victory.

Second game, my dice went cold. The TLTs were chewing up ships they had no right to (who consistently rolls 4 shots on TLTs, all with 3 natural hits?!). Decent flying kept me in the game until the last possible moment, when 3 blanks on a range 3 shot took me down.

These things happen. All you can do is be a gracious winner, and a pragmatic loser. Take away from the losses what you can in terms of flying, and enjoy the next game.

(I have an overwhelming need to apologise every time my dice go hot, but that's me)

Was helping a friend of mine practise prior to an event he was attending by using lists that he thought would be a counter to his own.

Anyway, we play against each other a lot so its always a close game but I think the dice decided to boost his ego somewhat . . he managed to roll 14 red dice in a single turn and managed 14 natural hits. . Even Soontir cannot repel dice of that magnitude.

In the second game we played, his dice were nowhere near as solid and he lost.

Just goes to show, relying on hot dice is NOT a viable tournament tactic.

Was playing with a friend to decide what list I was going to be practicing for upcoming store championships. First list; Vader, Fel and Jax. Needless to say he was rolling some hot attack die while I was just whiffing on the defense. First time Fel was attacked was at Range three, SD and AT and through an asteroid giving me 6 die. He throws 2 Crits and a hit, I roll......6 blanks.....2 Crits in Fel first attack with 6 Evade die....lost that game horribly.

Next game; Vader, Fel and OL. My friends attack die are just horrible and I steam roll him. Of course I'm still learning how to fly Fel and Vader and flew much better but stil, he consistently rolled one hit or all blanks even with TLs.

I've had games like that last one still sticks with me I had maarek at range one of a HWK with a TL for ATC and I rolled all blanks, so I spent the TL and get three more blanks.

Most frustrating thing was I flew brilliantly that game but couldn't get a shot through.

All my dice rolls are bad. Either bad for me or bad for my opponent.

this is exactly the reason rebel regen is so popular in tournaments

as long as the dice aren't astronomically garbage, you can recover from anything

other good dice-independent guarantees are thrusters + focus, stress upgrades ala r3-a2 and tactician, and

Often times some of the best lists work very hard to minimize dice rolling or the effect of those rolls. They may not benefit from hot dice but they also don't suffer as badly when the dice turn cold; the net result is the game turns back to player skill instead of random luck.

You've heard of multiple TIE Advanced flying with Accuracy Corrector? That is a way to help minimize the effects of dice on your game.

I rarely have a problem getting good rolls when playing at my LGS, but for whatever reason when I'm home playing my wife, I can't roll more than one hit to save my life.

Maybe that's best.

Individual close games can be swayed by dice. This is true. And I feel terrible when it happens to my opponent. I actually probably feel worse when my opponent gets royally dice screwed than when it happens to me. At least when it happens to me, I can adjust and try to overcome it - but when it happens to my opponent, you still need to tear them apart to ensure the win.

Last weekend at the SC, I had a game where I was rolling 3-4 hits unmodified consistently, versus 0-1 evades (out of 3) modified. Heck - twice in the game, Poe was at R3 w/o a focus token, and rolled 3 eyes. Of course, it later came back to haunt me when 2 A wings were 1 shot in the opening round of combat during the championship game.

What gets me, is when someone takes like 2 shots at you because you outflew them the entire game, and then complain about how they got dice screwed. No good sir - you did not get dice screwed. You got outplayed.

I felt really bad for one of my opponents this weekend. He flew pretty well into a bad matchup, but his dice were terrible and mine got hot. Rexler's first shot at Soontir was Range 3 through a rock. I rolled 2 hits, he rolled I want to say all blanks, autothrusters blocked one but he took a crit and lost his stealth device.

Dice are why I'm considering a list with Miranda+Regen Poe or Han just so I don't have to worry as much about green dice

I had a game at a tourney last weekend wherein every red came up a hit or crit, after dice mod. No exaggeration - every single red hit. I did out position my opponent and had focus and/or target locks every time I shot, but I destroyed ship after ship and he conceded midgame due to having only one wounded ship left vs. my barely scratched list. I offered to let him use my dice and even swapped out the dice I was using for others from my bag, but it didn't change! I felt genuinely bad for the guy, but what can you do? Sometimes the dice are skewed.

Randomness is not always a bad thing and probably one of the reasons for X-Wings huge success!

Randomness gives the worse/beginning player a chance to win and also creates tension where there otherwise would be none.

Randomness can mess you up though, mess you up but good!

I find that many people I play against who complain about dice luck rarely build there lists for dice mitigation. Then they face me and claim my dice are always hot against them. No, I just build lists that do their dandiest to avoid those situations. The dice gods are evil evil creatures so I do what I can to cut them out of the equation.

I got Cobra into range 1 of soontir, rolled all blanks, then Cobra died shortly thereafter.

I hardly use Prockets anymore. 5 dice w/ a 3 agility ship and I normally roll 1-2 hits every. single. time. I'll fire my primaries with my A-wings at get 3 hits all day long at range 1.

I do love the situations when you have a lot of dice manipulations and they still fail you. I've had TL + Focus before with HLC. Rolled 4 dice all blanks. Re-rolled them all, 4 blanks... Close to rage quitting...

In a store champs this past weekend, my first two rounds went real well... then my dice crapped out on me. I started noting them in my final game. My average roll on 4 dice was less than 2 hits. My average on 3 was a little over 1. (This is not with Focus modding... that only brought my 4 dice up to a solid 50%... well under the 75% one can expect).

My green dice were on fire for most of the day, thankfully... but so were my opponents.

Bad Dice Happen. So do phenomenally Good Dice.

It's what happens when you play a dice game.

Doubt the dice gods not! It is they that turn the dice not thee modify your dice all you want but should it amuse them you will get nought but blanks.
