Character Backstory Help?

By pookjo3, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm starting a new campaign with some buddies of mine this weekend and it's my first time creating a character for any tabletop RPG. My GM has helped me kinda figure out a lot of the actual stat stuff that I needed but I'm still trying to figure out a more solid backstory for my character so I can react better when other PC's ask about me.

So far my character is:

Bringe DeBrek

Home Planet/System: [not sure yet]

Age: 25

Height: 1.7m

Blue skin

Red Eyes (slightly bigger than average)

Grew up in poverty with his parents and younger sister barely scraping by, learning to work on mechanical systems as he helped his father with his farming equipment. He often saw planes flying out of a spaceport that was relatively near by and always had the desire to fly one day. A deadly disease (might need a specific one) sweeps through the system and decimates the poorer citizens, leaving very few alive. As his family gets sicker and sicker he scrounges up some money for a some medicine to help stall the disease, but only gets enough for one family member. Him and his parents choose to save his sister. His parents die soon after, and he decides to go out and earn money for more treatments for his sister any way he can (which leads him to the PC's in our group).

Semi TL;DR: I need to figure out how i got the first batch of medicine for my sister, how much the treatments will cost (how much he will have to send home every month), and where his home planet is.

Any suggestions?

The first batch of medicine could have come from a legitimate source. Star Wars has Red Cross type organizations, it could have been one of them. Then, after the majority of the diseased citizens die or overcome the sickness, they leave. Your sister is stuck with a strange form of it that persists, and requires further treatment. However, you don't have a nice organization trying to help out anymore. Perhaps the treatments are held under certain laws that prevent easy access. Or maybe they're ridiculously expensive. So you have to turn to the black market. As for exact amount you have to send, I don't think it should be X credits every Y days, or something like that, that gets a bit too boring for me. Instead, this should be your obligation, and every time your obligation is rolled by the GM, you have to send money. How much money? Well, how much money do you have? You would be dealing with con men and shady characters. It should cost a significant amount, but there should be some reward of a little less obligation magnitude each time as you pay for more treatments. Rolling doubles could mean you have to go track down a guy who took the money and never delivered the treatment. Or your sister hits a very dangerous step of the disease and needs something very specific and rare and nearly unobtainable really soon (aka, macguffin). Just some thoughts.

As for home planet, I see that you have blue skin and red eyes, so are you a Chiss? If you are, don't pick Csilla (Chiss homeworld), as it's pretty hard to communicate with, let alone send money to, that region of the galaxy. I'd recommend some off the main path world in the northeastern regions of the galaxy if you are Chiss, to represent an resettling from their space to somewhere geographically "in the neighborhood." This map can help you pick a planet.

Blue Skin and red eyes suggest a Chiss, which are very uncommon in the galaxy and it's very unlikely that there would be a family of settlers outside the Chiss ascendancy. I'd suggets to change the race, or at leats have him adopted somehow on a backwater colony.

For the rest the backstory is good, maybe flesh out a bit more the wishes part to determine his career spec, does he like to repair and keep stuff working? (-> mechanic spec) Does he like to modify and improve stuff?(->Outlaw tech spec); or does he want to fly through the stars (->pilot).

Give each character in his backstory a name and decide the situation of the sister, is she ok, but requires medcines to avoid relapses? is she in hospital undergoing treatment?

This part is also excellent to decide the Obligation and Motivation: for motivation the Relationship: Sibling is perfect, while the obligations that could apply well to that background are Debt or Favor (how did he get the money for the medicine?); or Family (he feels responsible for the well being of his sister).

As for the medicine there are possible options: he got a loan from a loan shark that he has to repay; he owes a favor to a crime boss that got him the medicine, he stole the medicine from a lab (maybe it leads to a Blackmail or Criminal Obligation).

Treatment costs are up to you, but it also depends how often he has to send money back home. As for his home planet, i'd definitely suggest outer rimm maybe near the chiss ascendancy space (look on the map for the closest place in the outer rim to the planet Csilla)

My bad guys, guess I didn't mention that I'm a duros (no idea how I forgot about that haha)

He's going into the technician career with a specialization in mechanics (with a small emphasis on flying/maintaining ships)

My GM has suggested that my Obligation is Family (+10 currently) and that the amount that it would cost would be some sort of scaling factor tied to that, but I do like the con men idea somewhat.

As far as condition of sister, I was considering having her be VERY sick at first, so I have a very good reason to leave my home to go deal with the seedier underbelly of society.

Thank you so much for the assistance so far though! Really appreciate the help.

haha i totally forgot the Duros, thanks for clarifying that. And it toally makes sense he'd be a pilot, so get piloting space skill, or maybe take two specs like fringer/mechanic to represent his flying abilities and expertise

So far, I haven't spent any XP (I'm waiting until our meeting when we finalize our characters) quite yet but I've chosen my skills to specialize in and I have 1 point in space and atmospheric piloting. I'm not going to focus too heavily on the flying aspect early, seeing as my character is not trained in it initially (he's gonna be a quick learner and pick up on it quickly), but over time I will put more and more points into it as he trains and has more experiences.

So I think I have a bit better grasp on what I want my backstory to be, but I'm still a bit lost on the homeworld aspect. In my research, Duro is pretty much mined out of resources and not inhabited by many, so I'm not really keen on coming from there exactly but it is an option
