Tractor beam your own ships?

By rickwaza, in X-Wing

My 9 year old son brought this up when he heard about tractor beams. Could you fire a tractor beam at one of your own ships to get the boost/barrel roll effect? Not that this would be smart, necessarily, but if it would prevent flying off the board or something, would it be a legitimate tactic? Now that I think about it, could you do something similar with Dead Man's Switch? Fly a Z with dead mans switch into the middle of a swarm and then shoot him with your own ship for a big kaboom.

Using a T-Beam is an attack and the rules are clear that you may not attack your own ships.

so, no.

Nope, you can't target your own ships. Similar question came up when Z95s with Dead Man's Switch became a thing.

Edit: Ninja'd.

No.

Per the rules, you may not target friendly ships.

Gotcha. Found the dead man's switch thread just after I posted.

Targeting your own ships would have more consequences than just the DMS or a Tractor Beam. An Ion Cannon on one of your own ships for instance could have a fast ship suddenly do a 1 straight, even if it isn't on the dial.

Though there's nothing to stop you in your own house of course. So if you and your son want to be able to do that, go for it.

Give your son a cookie for having a good idea, I mean it wasn't great but he's nine so i'll cut him a little slack.

If you design your list for it, it may have its benefits. A double barrel roll, a push to get into range.

This, deadman kamakaze and ionization are actually really interesying ideas. They do come at a huge disadvantage in many cases but from an implementation and thematic perspective? Awesome.

The self-ionization would be Ender's Game of course.

Well legs are useless in zero g so it was a clever idea.

While you may not target your owns ships with attacks you're still free to drop bombs/mines on top of them and have them suffer the full results.

Splash damage rarely cares who is suffering it although you can't target an ally to be the center of it all.
