Very new player

By JamieTSB, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi, I am a very new player.

I feel like a bit of a loser as I have nobody to play against so have been trying out strategies against my own brain...yes I am a loser so keep the insults down if y will.

I have just received my TIE interceptor expansion, but on my first solo play I was very disappointed to receive the 'Damaged Sensor Array' card..does this mean that all of my actions are 'um-performable' for the entirety of the game of just one round?

I am sure there will be more questions so please be patient, and if you live near Exmouth UK drop me a line...I want a real game!

Damage cards are ever lasting unless they state on them what must be meet to flip them over, which changes it to just a combat hit and the text effect is no longer executed each round.

Welcome to the game.

John79 is correct, those crit's last for as long as they say they do. If they don't say anything then they last until the ship is destroyed.

A few links you may find useful...

http://dockingbay416.com/campaign/that's a coop game, and has in AI cards for imperial ships. Also you may want to look into Vassal (the web site is blocked at work now...) but if you google Vassal X-Wing you'll find it.

It's a program that lets you play games like X-Wing online with other people. It's a virtual table top so you still have to have the rules and upgrades and such.

Damaged Sensor Array grants you an action to flip it over and end its effect. So, during your perform action step, if you don't have a stress token or if you have an ability that lets you perform actions while stressed, then you can roll an attack die. In the first core set, this critical would be flipped on a *hit* result on the attack die. In the new core set, it is either a *hit* or *crit* result on an attack die that would flip the critical. (You are currently allowed to use either damage deck when playing, regardless of which damage deck your opponent is using. But the two decks are mutually exclusive, you use either one or the other). So, in general, you could perform actions off your action bar next turn, but some pilot and upgrade abilities might let you do an action off your action bar as soon as you flipped the Damaged Sensor Array critical.

Well. with that attitude, who would want to insult you? You're doing it all by yourself. :D.

Look through the main forum, there are several topics concerning solo play, I've got a topic on that myself.

Also look around for the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster, which can be played solo.

Sadly, I seem to be heading towards the solo play arena myself, as players locally are fading away from X-wing in favour of other pursuits. But, the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is a fantastic way to keep gaming, even if it's by yourself.

My town got burned out on the Han vs Phantom meta, especially when the Decimator arrived. Slowly people are coming back.

Luckily the city where I work has an active scene so I pick up the odd tournament there.

Solo play scratches the itch though, and it's very easy to get a game in when I have a spare hour.

Thank you to all of you, great advice and very helpful.

I'd be surprised if there isn't a club you could join somewhere nearby, BTW. Try asking on the UK X-Wing Facebook group.

^I'd second the recommendation to look a little bit more into your local scene. I was very surprised to find that the Regional matches in my area are held at a store only 18 minutes away from me (and they have regular X-Wing nights as well).

I've got another gaming store about 7 minutes the other direction. They don't have a regular X-Wing thing, but are very much down for supporting local gamers -- they've done a couple X-Wing things, and I'm certain they'd be interested in letting folks play in their store (minimally, it entices other customers to buy a product, but these are also folks who enjoy the hobby themselves!).

So ask around at local stores, see if they know of a place or have heard any interest, and try and set something up! It's a huge boon having a store that supports your specific hobby!
