Time for Minor Factions?

By patox, in X-Wing

Everything in Star Wars doesn’t fit neatly into one of three buckets of Rebel, Scum and Empire and this seems to be limiting theme-wise.

To add variety and allow players to be more thematic, other game systems have created minor factions.

Typically these smaller factions:

  • Do not have the variety of the main factions
  • Have limited rules that allow them to take options from the main factions
  • May be more conservative stat wise and may not be as viable in a tournament setting, because it's about the theme

In a way, First Order and Resistance are already minor factions that are allowed to take all the options from either Empire or Rebels.

But adding Minor Factions would be a great way to introduce:

  • Mandalorians
  • Corellians
  • Hutts
  • Black Sun
  • Ohnaka Gang
  • Nightsisters

Or maybe they're all just Scum and Villainy. Any thoughts?

All your options would really fit under S&V same as the First Order, Empire and Resistance, Rebel Alliance all fit under Imperial and Rebels.

I was thinking more "Younglings" for the Rebels, Cadets for the Imperials and Jawas/Ewoks for Scum.

there was only ever 1 / 2 (depending) Ewoks ever written in to a Ship. It was an X-wing.

a story made up by Wes Janson to Wedge Antillies... it came to a point where it was such a myth that Wedge in combat tried to scare off the enemy by strapping a stuffed ewok toy to his chest and strike fear in to the enemy forces (it worked)....

the myth of that Ewok gained so much plausibility that it caused scientists to attempt to make an ewok capable of piloting an X-wing all by himself.

They enhanced their intelligence, and gave him prosthetics to allow him to reach the controls... it did work, i forgot both of their names. but it worked.

(i know this because my fiancee would only fly a ship in which an Ewok could pilot, causing me to do research on it. turns out Wedge is 1/2 an Ewok pilot.)

That sounds feasible; after all Wedge is short and Scottish.

Maybe if more TFA ships come out. Yes.

This idea has been presented before, and I think it would be good for the game. There are so many other factions that don't fit into one of the established factions. Many people say that Scum is the catch all factions, but some of the known galactic powerd/factions are rather noble and don't fit into the Scum faction. Such galactic power factions are the Hapans, Corellian Security, the Chiss, Ssi Ruu, Corporate Sector Authority, etc. These could all have a ship or two of their own and use some from existing factions to make colorful fun lists

Literally every one of those factions would fall under Scum's banner. Heck, Mandalorians, Black Sun, and Hutts are all already represented.

Mandalorians are not the same as Boba Fett and don't easily fall under scum and villainy.

Mandalore is a legitimate government with generations of traditions.

Mandalorians and Corellians are their own sovereign planets and have their own navies and their own ships. They are in no way Scum.

If Scum gets subfactions (which I would like), it will probably be after Wave 13. I want Black Sun and Hutt Cartel (I guess we would need all new cards with new faction symbols, big headache for designers)

Enough outa you Welshie.

I would like them to implement some minor ugly designs for scum, as well as squadron customizations for the three factions.

Not only are a lot of pilots named "Black Sun" Whatever Pilot, some of the ships have Black Sun symbols on them.

To paraphrase an incredibly cheesy line on RotS, from the Mando's point of view it's the Republic and the Sith that are scum.

Please no. They never should have added S&V as a separate non-mercenary faction. Factionization takes away options and diversity, by reducing the pool of ships/pilots each player can draw from. (unless you think FFG will produce other factions without affecting the current production rate on the current factions).

It's a two player game. Anything over two factions is wasted, imho.

The Resistance and the First Order are already sub-factions and are window dressing with no mechanical impact on the game.

Why would we need more sub-factions then?

I guess, the question is why not? What's wrong with window dressing? It's not like they'd dedicate a whole wave to it. A little more variety wouldn't hurt the game.

Probably the subfaction for S&V that makes the most sense would be the Smugglers and Spies faction from the LCG. Talon Karrde (if they go legends) and all the various other smugglers that are currently missing from the game, stuff like that. That would also be a better place for a scum YT1300 or YT2400 compared to the current S&V, which is made up of pirates, bounty hunters, slavers, black sun, etc.

There are now 4 subfactions within the larger factions that are not being utilized. Let's see what they've got planned for that first. But even then, this is a skirmish game, not an RPG.

This is something guys like us do for our own enjoyment... don't expect FFG to do it as a product range.

Quoted for truth.

Exactly. If you want mission based, or story based games (and you should, you really should, if only for a needed break from the standard dogfight) then you already can.

Well maybe there could be some synergies, like 'fly 3 or more black sun pilots and increase all pilot skills by one', or 'if you fly three or more rogue squadron members, treat all bank manoeuvers as green'. Maybe one day... When they run out of ideas or the meta gets too big and complicated to implement upgrades that concern all factions.

But they have plenty much of other ideas to thrive on, so I highly doubt they would implement minor factions or something like that anytime soon.
