Space Station: Does not make sense

By ryanabt, in Star Wars: Armada

I like the game dynamic of having an item that can remove hull, but it makes so little sense that I can't handle it. Help me!

How does, in the middle of battle, a space station fix the hull of a capital ship or squadrons (I can understand these more as perhaps replacements rather than fixing ships)?

Space wizard did it.

Damage itself is fairly abstract... "Destroying" a Ship is somewhat abstract.

The "Damage" may be Crew Morale, and parking nearby to a friendly station offers a sense of comfort and security to a shaken crew, which increases their capability to weather further damage.

Its no worse than trying to work out why Motti gives things extra Hull points, but they lose it if he "Dies". - Relating it to Crew Morale as well as physical hull damage - or even just internal damage and disruption, also shows how you get things "under control"

Since we don't really have any idea how long a single round of battle in Armada takes, I don't have a problem with it.

Bear in mind that a single "turn" in Armada - specifically a Ship activation - might take up as much as twenty minutes of real-world time. And in that time, you might be able to quickly ferry across extra fuel, damage control supplies, extra personnel even.

It's in the same vein as "why does a Repair order suddenly repair damage - were they just ignoring it beforehand?" A 'Repair' is more like "shut down non-vital systems so we can devote more resources to repair" - in the same way that a station might give them enough extra power - and protection - that they actually carry out the repairs themselves, rather than the station doing it directly.

In 'Star Trek', hull breaches are sealed and the ship held together by force fields - a technology that fans of the Star Wars Cross Sections will be aware is already used in space vessels, in the form of "tensor fields" that hold big ships together securely. So it could also be that the station just beams extra power to the ship so it can tighten everything up.

Either way, you should definitely think of damage as less than "holes in the hull" and more as the amount of punishment it can take before it's no longer a credible threat to the enemy.

Station is no different then the Engineering command

Repair droids. Like in the movies them driods repair stuff mid battle. The station woukd have more

A fast wash and wax at a space station makes more sense than some ship beaming you over shield replacements.

I always imagine a swarm of babbling Sullustians pouring out of the station with bottles of knock-off windex and newspapers, wiping off the bridge viewport as I try to wave them away.

Meanwhile, the engineering crews are hard at work chewing gum and sticking **** together with bailing wire and dura-duct-tape.

Command Dials - reassign flexible members of crew to either the targeting systems, repair crews, engine room or air traffic control. (Note: read flexible as laundry)

Motti - Provides expert knowledge to the engineering crews keeping the ships alive longer. This knowledge dies with him.

Spacestation - Crucial replacement parts are awaiting collection as the ship speeds past.

Come at me bro.

I see little space ant-bees buzzing out and filling the voids with their tiny bodies then simultaneously, signaled via pheromone, they spend their last life-force to heat their bodies to the point their carcasses fuse together forming a robust but temporary repair.

BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ

These stations are awfully friendly to anyone that happens to dock there...

Stop ****-shaming.

Anyway, they might just be cowards who gleefully surrender their goods and wares to whoever happens to be on their doorstep.

Or, the station might be an unmanned depot full of goodies.

Or, they could be merchants who just work for profit, and every Imperial Captain carries a personal stipend which he can use on pimpin' his bangin' ride whenever he gets the chance.

Just...don't open that box. Like that Pandora's box nothing but bad will come out of it.

They're already in spacesuits, mate.

they're just really opportunistic engineers

after all, any business is good business

and, honey, business is a-boomin'!

So it's probably run by Lando. . .

I can live with the station repairing ships, since a ship can only really effectivly get 1-2 repairs out of it, plus the ship could do the same with engineering commands, for me the issue comes when 5-10 squadrons use it to become near invincible. Getting that much squadron health back per turn is rather absurd to me.

It is the one rule that we have always ignored, it is so dumb. It is like mysterious terrain rule in warhammer, I've never played anyone who hasn't been OK with just forgetting it exists.

I actually really enjoyed mysterious terrain rules.

Squadrons that are sitting on the station aren't hurting ships. Who cares?

They're tied to one very small spot and, unless they're riding the edge of the token exposing themselves to engagement, their shots are all obstructed.

Oh God. . .a blob of TIE Bombers sitting on the edge of the station with Rhymer. Have fun taking THAT objective.

This is what I mean. 5 HP and they regen 1 per turn if they are being given squad orders, let's not even get started about scatter aces, if you don't alpha them in one turn they can regen a third of their health. If they are being given squad orders they can shoot and them move onto the station. Next turn, move to the edge and shoot. The obstruction protects them further and they are regening, plus they are still shooting full shots every turn.

Maybe give the space station stats. Give it shields and a hull and and engineering stat. The player who has the most ships at the station and can use those engineering points. I would love to give the station a point value and give it to the first or second player then let the other player buy an equal point value of ships
