Custom Box for painted minis Imperial assault + expansions

By godofcheese401, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hey guys,

I love this games and started to paint all minis of imperial assault and the expansions but I found that that I was unsatisfied with the box they provided for the game so I custom build my own. It is a 3 tier stackable wood box with enough space for all minis of the original game and expansions. It also has space for the cards and tokens of the game.

Let me know what you think J

Very nice! Box and miniatures.

Is that heavy? What keeps the models from moving around during transport?

What about room for General Weiss (the second AT-ST)?

Hey Fizz,

To answer your questions. I don't process the general Weiss chicken walker. I had a hard time to justify the purchase seeing that we already had the normal one included in the imperial assault box set.

I'm also missing a couple of the newest expansions that came out with the latest expansion

I used light maple for the box to make sure it is sturdy and not too heavy. Overall it is not that much heavier then having the original boxes.

The bottoms of the tiers are made out of a two hardboards(really light and super cheap) where I used a 1inch drill bit to cut out the perfect circles from the top layer. This allows all the minis to sit comfortably in the bottom of the box without ever moving. You can see some empty spots for other minis next to dark vader in the second picture.

I am running into the same problem as you. I have been using the core box with the battle foam insert (it worked really well for the first wave or two). Now posed to purchase my second core and most of the expansions I have out grew it. I really have been thinking about it over and over and I think the most cost effective / quality storage solution (while still using the battle foam insert) for me is to use the second box as a tiles and figures overflow box with homemade foam core dividers. If I get a chance I would try and post what I come up with.

I like what you have done.

I've looked into foam inserts too, but exactly like you mentioned, once you have some of the expansions you run outta of space. It would be really cool if fantasy flight could manufacture a box that would include space for all expansions since everything is out now. I made all my tiers 1 square foot but I think I would do it bigger (probably 1,5 square foot) if i had to redo it all over again because I couldn't build a tier spacious enough to give enough space for all the game board pieces (and still look like a nice overall box) since they are all different in shapes.

I'm looking forward to see what you come up with.

Nice box and collection!

Thanks for sharing your design.

I ended up buying a cheap plastic 3 drawer box and making dividers in the top for minis.

The second drawer is empty and awaiting more minis. Third drawer has all the tokens, cards, books, etc...

I keep the tiles in labeled bags and the AT-ST (campaign game stuff) in the core box.

I don't have the expansions yet... We'll see how the space works out. I may go the a similar route you have.

Hey Vapor,

I originally intended to go your way but i really got into wood working lately and thought this would be a good opportunity to have some fun while doing something that would be useful.

What did you make your separators out of ?
