How is your community holding up?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

If there is space. Then Do it. ABSOLUTELY DO IT.

EXPOSURE is AWESOME.

Sure, getting in the way of a paying establishment crowd can be a bit of a no-no, but if there's space, there's space, and space should be utilised.

In my Experience, Magic Players won't give up Magic for another Game.

But they generally do have disposable income to dabble in a game as well as Magic :D

My LGS has dedicated 6' x 4' gaming tables that wouldn't work for Magic, so there's always that guaranteed space.

My biggest issue is that they don't have dedicated demo tables. Maybe it's the old GW redshirt in me, but demos are how you grow the hobby and community. The old owner would just tell people, "Oh, you're interested in Warhammer/40k/Warmahordes/Flames of War/X-Wing? Come in on Wednesdays, there's a club that can show you how to play."

Guess how often they showed up on Wednesdays. . .

But a great intro game and an invitation to come in on Wednesdays would be more likely to stick. Especially if you got them to buy that starter set, so they've invested money in it.

It might be a troubling sign, but I joined the facebook group for our city's Armada players and posted "I'd be interested in adding Armada to my game list from X-Wing" and was greeted with a flood of not less than 6 people wanting to unload their dust-collecting sets, even when I filtered and said "complete sets only" on the post. I'm meeting someone today and getting everything so far for 1/2 off retail.

My biggest concern now is whether there will be anyone to PLAY against!

I've kinda gotten to the point where I'm ready to roll into the LGS, throw down the game mat and play with my buddy on popular nights. I feel like we're being actively discouraged because there is a huge magic crowd and we may perhaps "rock the boat."

A game store kicking you out for taking up MtG space would clearly not be an FLGS. Have you actually been actively discouraged, or was it just a feeling?

There's no question that MtG is the cash cow of of gaming stores, but it seems to me like it'd be beyond the pale for them to toss out anyone who is in the midst of a game, even if it wasn't MtG.

Ouch, that is a troubling sign. I'd be curious to learn what happened in that community.

I never said they tossed me out, I'm saying I was discouraged from attempting to play on any nights taken up by Magic.

Its effectively the same thing.

You are either Welcome, or you are Not.

Honestly, bugger 'em. If there's room, play. :D

If you get an odd day where room's tight... be nice.

And Patrick Swayze will tell you when it's time to not be nice. ;)

That is what we did, the X-wing master race took the opportunity to play today so we brought in Armada and played a few games...had someone watching the others just doing their own thing.
