How is your community holding up?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

The community here is what is always have been. Three players consistently play the game, and we have done so every other Thursday since the game launched at on of the FLGS (the other stores doesn't really seem to care much about the game). So we three played quite a lot, so that's nice. The Sullust event didn't to anything to boost the numbers, really. Although the event itself consisted of eight players, four of them were from outside the city (from other large cities, with apparently have players and had already hosted their Sullust-events). If anything, it kind of left a bad taste. Don't get me wrong, it was great to have that many players at the tournament, but every price but one went to people "outside" of our local community, which felt "meh".

According to the store owners, Armada does sell reasonably well. I guess a lot of people just aren't interested in playing with people outside their ordinary play group (which of course is fine, each to their own).

EDIT: Just in case, please don't use my post as a springboard to discuss the so called "prize sniping". There already is a topic for that.

If the three of you are always there essentially putting the game on display, then maybe there's something about your locale that doesn't feel that Armada is attractive to them. What's the demographic of people who haunt your (F?)LGS?

Also, what sort of wider community do you live in? Do I get the sense that you live in a town surrounded by cities? Some communities probably just don't have enough people with the interest to get into the game in order to sustain a growing group of players.

Armada is all but dead where I live. I only know one other person that owns the game. Since I wasn't getting enough table time in, I'm in the process of trading my set and expansions out for Imperial Assault.

What is the best way to gain interest in this game? Hold a few Demo days?

Advertising is big and you need to be prepared to have a month or 2 of slow growth.

Be open and have fun even if you are just showing people the base game

So what I did was I set up some days with the store, advertised the heck out of it all over social media, while getting together with the X-Wing organizers and seeing what days they use and pick their lighter day.

That is EXACTLY what I had in mind, essentially my friend and I learned the game to the point were we can "pass on what we have learned."

I've seen the size of the X-wing crowd, and I know there are a few converts amongst them I just need to tap that vein...and show them how fun Armada can be.

The FLGS we play at are actually really great. Age-wise, the demography is from 10-year old kids to people in their forties. It's mostly Warhammer players, but there are quite a few X-wing players as well (and other types of games). When the game was released, one of the other Armada players did demo the game frequently at the store. I seem to be the only one not playing X-wing along side Armada, but I know that there are several X-wing players who would like to play Armada as well, but feel like one time-and-money consuming miniature from FFG is enough (which I agree with, hehe).

Actually, I live in the biggest city in the area (as in the closest city that is larger is 650km away), so I doubt that there aren't enough people. I know that several smaller cities in the vicinity in fact have larger active communities. I guess we just aren't pretty enough ;)

The local facebook pages has 30 folks but only 3 to 4 active. 1 active person has gone awol and he was the facebook admin and a big push to expand the game.

Then we lost two of the local game stores within a month time frame. And there was two other players but one got upset that you cant beat a ISD unless you have a mon cal.

When we do get a group together there is lots of interest but always hear about the lack of plans from ffg for expansion and the high cost of buying in.

Yeah if your store sells Armada chances are pretty good they'll be happy with you playing it on open gaming days and demoing it as well. With social media it's very easy to get the word out through Facebook, Meetup, and other avenues. My FLGS has its Thursday nights as minis games nights and we've taken Armada from just 2 to around 8 people. The important thing to keep in mind is that if you don't have a local meta, you can probably build one but it takes some work and communication. I've seen a lot of responses in this thread that boil down to "I wandered in somewhere and everything wasn't ready for me to just join a league or something so I never came back, my meta sucks." This kind of response is counter-productive. Somebody needs to be the person that puts in the work initially to get the ball rolling and getting people organized. If that person doesn't exist yet, then that person can be you.

Then we lost two of the local game stores within a month time frame.

Wow, what happened to cause that? How many other LGSs do you now have in your area?

As an X-wing player, it's apples and candy bars (nope, oranges are even way to similar for this metaphor).

Armada is a much more expensive and time-consuming game. (And I must admit that I don't find it nearly as fun...)

Additionally, while there may be some overlap, the game is for a different style of player. There are alot more interactions to know, fleet composition makes a much greater difference, and it seems to have a much higher wargamer-appeal factor.

I think some of the folks here hit it right on the head. The 40K, heavy minis gamer crowd seems like a better target demo. X-wing is so much lighter and less 'fiddly' that you're tilting at windmills trying to convert those players.

Just my 2 cents.

Dead as a door nail. Maybe 10 players in all of Nashville and Franklin, Murfeesburo

We have 4 regulars. No interest. It's too expensive to be a side game and not expandable enough for a hobbyist.

When you play 600-700 points is it rather expandable. 3D asteriods, space station 20 squadrons, 10 ships on board. Millions of combinations.

It is expensive but not having to paint a bolt action army or the like and build all the terrain daves tons of time and money.

$800 gets a game that is never boring or old.

I honestly think the core box set is too expensive to really break more players into the game. A rebel only or empire only box set would allow people to ease into the game and allow it to distribute more.

They also like to have playable games right out of the box.

$800??!

****, I'm in for only about $300 - all of it from the FLGS.

Of course, I won a bunch of my stuff at Sullust.

A lot is the pimp out stuff. Warlord lasers, tons of 2,3,&4 movement tools, dice boxes, tons of dice, upgraded movement and range rulers for all four players three seperatly mats, 3D asteriods, binders, ultra pro overs for ship cards and sleeves, token holders, transport containers, etc. it is not just the ships.

Dying here. Such low turnouts for league night that its been 'combined' with the X-wing league night. We'll be lucky to see 1 bi-weekly game played. X-wing exploded around the holidays, Armada even competes for shelf space now. FLGS owner told me privately that he's scaling back his next order to just have 1 of each ship and 2 core-sets.

The comments are the same "the ships look cool but its too expensive" or "the ships look cool but i'm already into X-wing"

lack of wave 3 news + X-wing Wave 8 + X-wing Imperial Veterans = Armada's life signs fading.

Just get them into a demo game. Congratulate them on their first move of a ship (that tool can intimidate people), have fun and make pew pew sounds!

We have game store in Murfeesburo that intimidates you for playing at their store with stuff you didn't buy from them. The other store attempts no events because he beliefs no one will buy his full MSRP ships (true) but doesn't understand that getting them into the door gets them to buy other things. For example I am willing to pick up a squdron pack or two, last minute stuff ai might need now or board games that are only say $10 more than online to help out. Some of the game store owners just don't understand the value of traffic. You bring a grind who won't buy Armada stuff because you have it all but while playing there picks up some netrunner packs etc. most game store are run by people who don't bother to even read there own trade magazines which explain time and time again it is about fostering relationships and getting foot traffic. Of course giving discounts by spending a certain amount would also help but some owners are just so pig headed. They just focus on magic for their living instead of working to expand in all direction through promotional pricing and event planning. These people could also rent out tables already set up with a a 3x6' map and wave the $10 fee with a purchase of $10 or more that day or if you have a sizable receipt or ledger of stuff you purchased in the past. The space of some of these game store are huge l the one is 50'x75' or something...at least. Easy to have a table set up in e back and with a couple demo models to draw customers eyes. Freaking idiots.

Local game store doesn't care. Owner and his buds play Armada, but they don't show to buff the numbers in tournaments. Doesn't even put any effort into the alleged weekly Armada days. Any interested players have pretty much stopped caring. Shame, really. A lot of the people I've talked to have been super interested.

Thus it is no longer an FLGS and instead is just an LGS

Yep, I avoid it now. And I buy my games stuff from Amazon (Since there isn't a FLGS nearby). Which is a shame, usually I pay 5-10% more to buy a product from an independently owned LGS, if the owner and community are good.

I'd check out Miniature Market. Prices tend to be at or below 30% MSRP. And shipping is free over a hundred bucks!
