Ship destruction rule - suggestion

I have an idea for a rule concerning the after effects of ship destruction.

"When a ship is destroyed by either a critical hit or its damage exceeds the remaining hull points by 3 or more the ship explodes dealing the following effects at distance 1 and below.

Large ships - 3 blue dice

Medium ships - 2 blue dice

Small ships - 1 blue die

Critical hits count as one damage

This rule would create some risk to tactics that swarm capital ships with fighters and medium small ships. It also just makes sense to me that when something as big as a star destroyer or mc 80 dies that it might explode and take some fighters with it.

What are your thoughts?

Maybe only ships/squads that are completely within distance 1? Having played Dystopian Wars, which had similar kinds of critical effects, it just felt awful as it basically just turned a momentary victory into a much larger landslide.

The principle sounds good, but I think keeping it very short range would stop it being too invasive.
