Dark Curse & missiles

By Ecthelion III, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can you shoot Dark Curse with missiles that require you to spend a target lock?

Yes.

Dark Curse only keeps you from re-rolling dice; he doesn't stop you spending the TL for another purpose.

Even if he did stop you spending the TL, it wouldn't matter, as you select weapon first, pay any costs for it, then pick your target. By the time his ability comes into play it would be too late to do anything.

When defending, ships attacking you cannot spend focus tokens or reroll attack dice.

So, yes you may still spend TLs on ordnance targeting DC, but you won't be able to modify them with a focus token or use an ability like Lone Wolf or Predator to reroll any of the dice. TLs are generally ineffective against DC because of his no re-roll ability, but you can still spend those tokens to fire missiles at him. Some missiles only require you to have a TL and instruct you to discard the card allowing you to keep the TL. These missiles can still target DC, but the re-roll granted by the unspent TL is useless against him making these weapons better suited to other targets.

So, yes you can still spend TL tokens to fire missiles and torpedoes at Dark Curse.

Under the first set of rules I believe this would not work, but in the new rules it works because of the following rule (rules reference, pg. 4 under Attack):

After a valid weapon and target are chosen and any indicated costs are paid, the target is considered to be the defender.

So, since the Target Lock is part of the cost to be paid, Dark Curse is not considered a defender until after that is done.

You can even spend your TL to reroll zero dice when attacking DC. Not sure if you ever want to do that.

Hobbie might, as a means to clear his stress. All I can figure is he K-Turned with a targeting mech and DC was the only guy he could lock.

If Hobbie k-turns with the targeting mech the acquisition of the target lock clears the stress after it is assigned, therefore he wont (unless you missed an opportunity) be sitting with a stress token after performing a k-turn (I will now also point out that you may, as per most recent rules update, acquire a target lock on a ship you have already target locked).
