Newbie question 1 bout three players and expansion advice

By FixB, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I've just bought the game and enjoyed a couple of games with my kids.

I'd like to play with them altogether instead of 1vs1.

Is this possible? I guess we would need to buy an expansion in order to play with 3 players? Which expansion would you recommend for this?

Thank you!

I don't know if you are aware, but there is a third faction exist in the game beside Rebel and Imperial, it is called Scum and Villainy. I recommend to get ships from this faction for a 3 player game. The best value is the Most Wanted expansion, which comes with 3 ships. You have to make some houserules, since no official 3-player rule exists.

The only problem with a 3 player game, is it tends to degenerate into a 2v1 then a 1v1. So you gotta do something to make sure it's fair for everyone.

Buying S&V like Ubul mentioned would be a good start for a 3rd faction.

You might want to consider the Heroes of Aturi Cluster co-op campaign as it is a great option for 3 (or more) players and is well suited to players of varied skill levels. Downside is that it necessitates a fairly large number of Imperial ships.

Actually there are rules for a three-way game, in the form of a scenario included with (I think) the IG-2000 box.

In terms of game mechanics it's reasonably straightforward to do, as the initiative system can cope with multiple players just fine.

Yep, that was going to be my suggestion/example. However for that scenario you also need a Slave I and Falcon expansion if my memory serves me correctly. Another option is simply for you to go 2v1 against your kids; give them each a ship or two and have them play as a team. make it thematic; one can be Luke, one can be Wedge and they're a team against the 'evil' TIE Fighters.

In the end though; yeah you're gonna need more ships. But that has nothing to do with wanting to do a 3 person game ;)

That one's easy - while the rules specifies certain ships, it works perfectly fine with others, just remove the rule that causes a player to lose if their flagship dies. Without that, it's a perfectly serviceable three-way scenario.

I love a good three-way.

Key is to make it objective based, maybe collecting a magguffin that someone has to grab then get off board edge.

If your going for a three way you need to say only attack to your left or right not have it be a free for all or yes someone will get ganged up on and feel a bit hurt.

The Aggressor comes with a three player mission!

I feel that the option of playing 2v1 is the best option for you.

Not sure what you are willing to spend

(if you have the red lettered box) you get 1 Tie Fighter Expansion and a Tie Advanced Expansion you could field a somewhat Trench Run Scenario where you play Vader and the ties and if you get at least one X Wing Expansion then the kids can play Luke and Biggs or Wedge.

(If you have the blue lettered box) the changes would be to get two Tie/FO expansions and 1 T-70 X-Wing expansion and let the kids play Poe and Ello while you fend them off with 4 Ties.

These options will run you another $30 plus shipping if you go to Miniature Market or $45 plus tax if you go to a Game Store.

I am not great at filling out all the point options, but you can find them all over he place. These options are also the way to get started with as many options with the ships you already own by adding more pilots in the expansions.

Hope this helps

As a Dad I am thrilled to see a "newbie" throwing dice and pushing plastic with their kids. Bravo.

This game suits 1v1v1 very well actually! The rules (and tokens) needed to play this variant of the game can be found in the Aggressor expansion. I'd also recommend you pick up the Millennium Falcon and the Slave 1, and Most Wanted expansions. This will give you everything you need for great 3 players games!

Shopping list for 3 player games:

1 Core (either will do) - this is needed to play the game.

1 Aggressor - needed for the 3 player rules and tokens.

(Optional to fill out lists the way the Aggressor mission recommends)

1 Millennium Falcon - Along with the Core's X-wing, the two make a fun list

1 Slave 1 - The Firespray and the two Core TIEs also make a fun list.

1 Most Wanted - provides three ships for the Scum faction (and can Scum cards and dials for the Slave 1!)

Multiplayer free for all combat games always suffer from being more about who gets aggro than the other decisions made. In 3P specifically, there's tendency for 2 players to beat on each other with the survivor getting picked off by the third.

That said, X-Wing is my favorite team combat game by a mile. 2v1 games are great, particularly if you have one player with more experience and it continues to scale up well to 2v2 and up to 3v3 in my experience.

Thank you all very much for your answers. I'm still a bit confused on exactly what would be the best thing to buy, but you definitely gave me food for thoughts.

(And I'm probably going to end buying the expansion (s) my kids are going to visually like the most within the ones you advised :)

Thanks

In ManoWar (GW's fantasy fleet action) we handled that by several ways:

-when going all out, having a triangular playing field (lower but still risk for 2v1)

-having an objective is a good idea (as named by others above), set a time limit, so that all players are forced to rush, no chance that one leans back and then finishes off the others, when they are already bleeding

-convoy action, try to capture as many trade/supply ship as possible

MoW has boarding actions, X-wing not (yet?). You can proxie by setting a number of ionisations: keep count how often a ship was successfully ioned, once a threshold is reached, its yours. It cannot(!) fire, but you steer it, trying to leave with it at your starting edge.. If someone else wants to take it over, ionisation count starts from 0 again.

If 3 players scramble for neutral convoy (shuttles, hwks, bombers, freighters), the convoy moves random straights forwards, never fires. You get one point for every ship captured, 0 for destroyed. Important that uneven number of convoy ships, and not dividable by 3.

Another option: one player defends the convoy. In this case (s)he actively steers the convoy ships. If they are unarmed ships, the players get negative squad points for the convoy ships, plus maybe some defenders more. The other 2 attack, points and capturing as above.

For the moment, I've postponed the 3-players games and bought the Rebel and Empire Aces in order to at least have enough ships to play fully at 2 players... Next steps later :)

Is there a good way to do multiplayer games? Yes! There are a number of scenarios, but also you can just make up some rules. Look at all the different scenarios that come in each product for examples of things you can do. Having multiple ways to score points is good, so trying to steal a few items or blow up a few items are a good way to go. You can even have one group trying to defend something, another trying to steal it, and a third trying to blow them up.

You can also have 2 vs 1, as well. This way your kids can split their forces and gang up on you.

Knowing what you have might help in knowing what to get next. If you just have a starter set, then, you might want to get one more starter set. That gives you two sets of dice and movement templates. It's a good number of ships for the price. There is one thing, though. The original starter set and the new Ep 7 starter set have pilots for their ships, but the expansion blister for each respective ship (so....like the X-wing single blister) has pilots that are not in the starter set. I would recommend getting at least 1 more of each of the ships in the starter set that you have to get all the other stuff.

If you want to take a plunge into the game, you can look locally for people that want to sell their collection. There always seems to be someone that is selling their collection of ships. Most of the time it's a good buy and a decent selection. Look on a local Facebook group or ask at the local players at the local game store. There is also places like www.bartertown.com.

Good luck! The game can be so much more than just the 100 pt deathmatch that is the tournament scene.

My favourite rules for 3 player games I learned from someone around here (I forget who): Attack Left!

Basically to win, Player A needs to destroy Player B; Player B needs to destroy Player C; and Player C needs to eliminate Player A. It's asymmetrical, sort of, since flighting the player that's trying to kill you doesn't actually help you win. It makes for some neat board states and often leads to one heck of a scrum.
