Preferred Method of Ship Transport?

By Rogue Thirteen, in X-Wing

Thanks for all the input, guys! This has been super helpful!

I live on the other side of the world, so choice is rather limited for me. Nevertheless, here is my observation so far:

Maybe there isn't Plano, but isn't there some sort of tackle box option?

since my Ties don't have hyperdrvies, usually carry them in my Star Destroyer, but Gozanti's good to.

I use a combo of the Plano 3952-10 (basically two 5231's attached together) and the SirWilliBald boxes. There's plenty of space in there and its pretty configurable. With the micro hangers and gear boxes from Sir Willi, everything is very organized, easy to find, and quick to get to and set up. Plus, with the boxes, the models have a little more protection than just rattling around against the plastic of the case.

Here are some pics of my setup. I've since added quite a few more ships, but at least you can get an idea of how awesome the micro hangers are. I've got 56 ships so far in my collection, and still have one full tray (out of 4) available for expansion. The Hounds Tooth, Deci, two Firesprays all live in the top compartment of the box in pluck foam. I'll have to figure out where to house the Ghost too, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Couple of Plano boxes, some compartments lined with strips of foam (especially good for Interceptors, Phantoms and Advanceds), some holding the vac-formed plastic trays from the ship blisterpacks (mostly the slim ships like Xs, Ys, Zs and Scyks as well as TIEs and /FOs), some packed with bubble-wrap (for awkward-sized ships like the Starviper and Aggressor). I've just picked up a cheap tool organiser with different-sized removable cups from B&Q (this bad boy, actually) which is excellent for large ships, large ship bases and chits and weird, slightly off-size stuff like the T-70.

For tournaments or X-Wing nights at my mate's place, I've got a cheap, light medium-sized tool box which includes a pull-out tray section that I can use to carry my list and paraphernalia between tables and loads of room under that for whatever I'm taking plus a small arts-and-crafts organiser that fits spare tokens and most small ships. The compartments in the lid are a perfect size for damage decks or upgrade cards, dials and bases.

Oh.My.God. 1374 combined with Micro Hangars....this is my dream come true. OP YOU SHOULD GO FOR THIS.

Yup there are some Japanese brands..but they're not as good as Plano for X-Wing, and I'd rather get Plano/Stanley/foam than buying those haha.

I have a question for those who have used Feldherr and/or KR Multicase. I was very interested in Feldherr until I looked closely at photos of ships in their "10 fighters with stands" trays. It looks like he trays will only accommodate a ship on its stand with a single peg, not both? The photos of B-wings thus show no stand at all. I seems to me that the advantage of storing fighters on stands is that everything is in one place and ready to go (with the tradeoff being less compact storage), but if you still need to store and fiddle with the second peg, that seems like the worst of both worlds.

For KR Multicase, do fighters fit with both pegs on? The issue with their stuff seems to be that oversized models like B-wings won't fit in their "standard" fighter slots, meaning lots of different types of trays would be necessary.

All of this raises another question as well- do many of you fly your fighters at "half mast," using just one peg on the flight stand? Is there any disadvantage to doing this?

Thanks,

RAH

The only time I use two pegs, is when I have no choice. For me, it makes them easier to move around; lowers the Cg, making them harder to bump, and that bit more stable when placing delicately. The odd time, I'll use two, for ships in formation that are bumping into each other (K-wings are ridiculous for this).

The Feldherr units I have, all hold the ship with one peg on. I personally don't leave the pegs on them (bad experiences with Battlefleet Gothic and ship pegs breaking off), and instead use their shallow trays to hold ships like X-wings and Advanced sitting flat, and the deeper ones to hold things like B-Wings and defenders.

My patented system:

1. Order X-wing Battlefoam tray.

2. Lovingly place individual ships in said tray only to realize that they are royal pain to extract, and I really do not want to assemble/disassemble them every freaking game, and new trays will be required every freaking wave, and OCD means my collection will be huge.

3. Set Battlefoam aside, never to be used again. Store and transport assembled ships in the box in which Battlefoam was delivered.

Tauntaun. That way they're kept nice and warm.

:D

I disassemble my ships when I'm storing them, as I'm generally going to be swapping the base tiles out. I tend not to fly the same pilots twice in a row that often, so keeping them assembled isn't that useful to me. Obviously, if you've got a couple of favourite squads you want ready to go, that's less helpful...

I hadn't considered the lower centre of gravity factor of only using one peg. That's something I'll have to experiment with.

I use the KR cases.

They have two types of 'fighter' trays. Well, three really.

The standard one does not fit tall ships. The TIE fighter does not fit. It fits X Wings, A Wings and other lower profile ships just fine.

the 'adjustable' tray fits all ships.

However, TIE bombers do not fit on their stands since they are a bit too wide. Y wings fit, but their noses stick out a bit and with time the paint will rub off.

They also offer a sightly weirder looking tray that is designed to fit the HWK290, and that tray fits everything but you can only fit like, six ships to a tray.

The best option IMO is to buy a single case with enough trays of different varieties to fit everything you currently own. Then, when that case becomes full, you order a second case with another batch of trays and split your collection by faction, so you have an Imperial case and a Rebel case. This allows you, at the time when you order your second case, to get exactly the trays you need to fit your collection because you'll probably over/under estimate how much of each particular tray type you need when you first order.

You can see my review (sorry for the potato quality photos) here:

I don't store mine on their pegs, but I think one of the different Feldherr trays has longer cuts for the B-Wing.

I never even bothered using more than 1 peg for small ships unless the ship model can't use 1 (B-Wing/Viper) or they are larger ship models with hull that spans over the base size (K-Wing/Punisher). Plus this is just my opinion but with 2 pegs the ships look rather clumsy and fragile, so far apart from its base.

EDIT: I've seen someone flying a parked Lambda before (no pegs at all!). **** majestic.

Some sort of plano with drawers instead of removable boxes.I lined the drawers with 2mm craft foam so everything is comfy and stays put.
