Thrawn incomming but not for awhile.

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

So according to Making Star Wars, Thrawn is coming to Star Wars Rebels... but it won't be until Season 3. Obviously this is just a rumor at this point, but if it's true then he's almost certainly coming to Armada!

This would make sense to be honest. X-Wing had Mara Jade awhile back, but had nobody else from the Zahn books. They've been no stranger to EU stuff, but strangely shy'ed away from Zahn's stuff. It could be a deliberate delay, waiting until 2017 for Thrawn's glorious debut!

What do you think, could there be any truth to this rumor?

That would be awesome.

Show of hands here, who hates Thrawn? Two people maybe, out of a sea of fans?

What's really surprising is that other popular items from Legends are slowly commuting back to the light of Canon (like VSDs, Immobilizer 418s)... but Thrawn's omission is kind of glaring. The only reason I can think of holding him back was to see how VII went, and to figure out where they would want such an influential figure to have the best impact without restricting the future plot for the sequels.

Aftermath has an unnamed Admiral. Wookiepedia's article heavily implies that this could be Thrawn. He could have been active during the Rebellion-era, but there needs to be something explaining why he didn't quash the rebellion outright.

Thrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn

(I think it's time we see some blue painted ISD's)

the two ships chasing the millennium falcon after its initial take off from tatooine were vsd's so those have been cannon all along.

Thrawn is hugely overrated.

Thrawn is hugely overrated.

On the contrary :)

as far as I remember Palpatine was more or less forced to send him to the Unknown regions due to the bias against non humans in the upper echelons. And there was something there Palpatine was hoping would give him an edge, and there was none better tha Thrawn to deal with danger and unknown races with unknown tactics.

For me, Star Wars isnt complete without him (or Mara and many other EU chars).

Personally, I don't think there's any room for space Sherlock in the new canon.

This was an excuse to keep him offstage until post-endor. With the canon reset, who knows where or when he'll appear?

I figured if anyone didn't like Thrawn, this would be the reason.

Thrawn is popular with Empire fans because he represents a version of the Empire that is not just Nazis-in-Space. As Romel to Palpatine's Hitler he makes it ok to root for the bad guys. For Rebel / Republic fans this means he represents an adversary who can be respected and who provides a different (and more interesting) challenge than Yet Another Generic Sith Lord or Emperor Clone #3,742. I look forward to seeing what the guys behind Rebels can do with such an iconic character.

Don't forget we already have a Zahn creation in Armada, Garm Bel Iblis! Plus the Interdictor Cruiser is making a Rebels appearance, and I think TZ invented them too. Shouldn't be too long til it shows up in Armada.

I would be very happy to see the Grand Admiral make an appearance, but short of being able to automatically pick objectives and inspect all your opponent's command stacks at will, I'm not sure how you'd do him justice rules-wise! If he is showing up in Rebels next year, it probably means we won't see him for a couple of waves though...

In which film/show/series?

I hope Thrawn gets into Armada as a commander. His ability would have to be trollgasmic

But what would his ability be?

He lets you look at your opponents command dials?

He gives all ships a intell officer effect?

Or he reduces all ships dials by 1 to s min of 1 dials. So they can react faster?

Are you talking about the film? Those were ISD-1s.

<Raises hand> Those books were terrible.

For a game I don't care much though. To be honest I've never really found the characters to be a big part of the game. It's hard to have any personality come through based on a dice modifier or whatever.

You sir, are insane. I bet you are a fan of the Dork Empire comics. :o

Takes all kinds though. :P

Grand Admiral Thrawn is the best part of the Empire pre-new cannon. I could go on about why he is cool as a character but that has already been touched on. Seriously cool part? BLUE SKIN AND RED EYES. ooooooh spoooky lol

the two ships chasing the millennium falcon after its initial take off from tatooine were vsd's so those have been cannon all along.

It's been a while since I watched a canon edit of a new hope, but those ships were never shown on screen were they (if they were, they were definitely not VSDs)? And they are definitely not identified beyond "a couple of imperil cruisers".

I think they were Star Destroyers just being referred to as cruisers because the term Star Destroyer hadn't been coined yet IRL

As for Thrawn him becoming canon would be cool I just hope they avoid the absurdity of his career in Legends where he was somehow involved in pretty much anything the Imperil military did competently before Endor.

Yeah, I feel like the EU had a habit of creating/taking something great, and going too far with it. Thrawn and Boba are the two prime examples. Thrawn went from this brilliant tactician who shattered the Empire's notion of human superiority to someone just waaaaaaaay too over the top. And Boba Fett. . .ugh. The EU kind of ruined him. Like the story where he destroys an entire Imperial Garrison by himself to get at one guy. . .and the guy somehow escapes.

I think they will do a better job of it in the new cannon honestly.

The one thing even people who hate them can say about Disney is this - they are very, very good at making money. That's why I didn't freak out when they bought Star Wars. They won't totally screw it up.

Yes, they were shown onscreen. And they are ISD-1s.

Here's the scene: https://youtu.be/9k-941c-ZTc

VSDs were never a part of the original 3 films ;)

Yeah, I wasn't positive I wasn't remembering the 2 ISDs from the escape from Hoth. Knew there was absolutely no chance they were VSDs though.
