Ships vs Playmat

By SPE825, in X-Wing

I'm thinking my of purchasing a few things today, and as a player that's been going for about a month and a half, I don't necessarily have a huge collection yet. I also do not have a true playmat. I have the one I made from felt.

So the question is should I purchase a couple of ships or for the same price, get a nicer playmat. At this point it just seems silly to me to get the playmat over a couple of new ships that will provide me with new upgrades, etc. Would you folks agree?

Personally, the ships. The mats are nice (I have a few of them), but more ships I would say are more important for a new player.

Go for ships. Then hit the fabric store and get black vinyl to replace the felt. It plays nice and is still super cheap.

The black vinyl material I picked up is flat black and has a very fine texture.

Sounds like a good idea. The felt is getting pretty messed up after ships sliding over it. Not to mention that you don't slide that well over felt anyway.

Yeah, get a mat upgrade at least even if it's home made. The thought of playing on felt just sounds like yuck to me.

As someone with five ships (which consist almost the list I really want to play plus two more) and who ordered a mat week ago, I vote for the mat. But my point might be very subjective. I came to X-Wing because it's Star Wars. So, when I started I decided I will have a few ships, make a list that I like and play with it, but I really love some of the "extras" on X-Wing. A nice playmat will make the game so much better! And I am also looking for those colour pegs and bases and the dial armor (don't know why I call it this...).

I think the platmat would win it's heavier and far less susceptible to breakage.

So I just said F it and ordered a playmat and a couple of ships.

lol, why not both?

One thing I've learned from years of wargaming is that games which lack visual appeal don't attract new players, and aren't as enjoyable as games which look great. Having a decent playmat makes a world of difference, IMO.

Telling the truth THE greatest of joys is having your_own_non_generic_playmat and custom ships

that means you find a huge 15k x 15k pixel star-filled picture, nebula or anything, and print it.

But for the beginning you need various ships, to find what playstyle you want.

So I just said F it and ordered a playmat and a couple of ships.

Well, that is the addict answer.

They grow up so fast *wipes away a proud tear*

I have a plain star mat... I want to get a second one for Epic battles, but am hesitating. Are the nice ones with Bespin and the Deathstar distracting? Do tokens disappear against the background? What are your experience?

Has anyone ever tried a 6x9' game? Because...I just wanna join all them mats together, man!

Drool

One option to look at is a yoga mat.

I'm using this one that I cut in half: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ya/ref=yo_ii_bia_view?ie=UTF8&ac=bia&reorder_params=B007MTWI48%2C110-6793210-6500232

It has a nice top, transports easy, and most importantly the ships do not slip around.

Do this; it's not too expensive and is much, much better than the official maps for actual play (eye candy aside).

Eye candy aside? That is the sole reason I am getting the official mat, otherwise I would just go with a chopped yoga mat.

Ships.

Get better.

Win a tournament.

Get a mat as a prize.

Enjoy your expensive, shiny ice skating rink, it's your money.

I've been thinking about the mats too. Are they that bad? My buddy and I are planning to build either a 5'x5' or 6'x6' X-Wing table once the weather breaks.(My coffee table isn't cutting it and my dining room table is currently in storage.) And I was planning on putting an official mat in the middle. But if they suck I may just figure out an alternative.

Well I was gonna say both but clearly you beat me too it

I would highly recommend picking up the aces packs for an upcoming purchase.

Both Rebel and Imperial packs are great

Pay the same price for travel and admission fees that you would have for a mat. Cry when you don't make top 4.

Having a good looking set-up to play at is so very important :)

I have the starfield mat and hopefully the end of coming week Ill also have the bespin mat and I can finally put together my armada table :o

I love my fabric mat from deepcut - good playing surface, tough as hell, and folds up tiny... http://www.deepcutstudios.com/product-category/mats-size-3x3/

And yeah, I'd get a nice one, if you're trying to show the game off in order to lure unsuspecting friends to the dark side... :)
