Ships vs Playmat

By SPE825, in X-Wing

Has anyone ever tried a 6x9' game? Because...I just wanna join all them mats together, man!

Drool

We have beenplaying 6'x3'+ regularly and I picked up black felt to cover my 9'x5' table to use the whole thing in our next game. 5' is the max width you really want to go as it is about as far as players are comfotably able to reach from a side. 6' would mean a three foot reach to the middle. That is getting too far.

I've been thinking about the mats too. Are they that bad? My buddy and I are planning to build either a 5'x5' or 6'x6' X-Wing table once the weather breaks.(My coffee table isn't cutting it and my dining room table is currently in storage.) And I was planning on putting an official mat in the middle. But if they suck I may just figure out an alternative.

See my post above about my 9'x5' table.

So I just said F it and ordered a playmat and a couple of ships.

5'x5' it is then!

So what's the consensus on the quality of the mats? Are they of good quality or am I better off seeking an alternative?

Well depending on what you are used to play on you might find them very slippery.

I had a board covered with synthetic black vinyl and it had good grip.

Then I got the official starfield mat and the ships do slip around much easier. You will definitely have to hold the miniature in place when positioning the movement template or it will be bumped. And even then the accidental slip is of course much easier to happen, rolling dice in the play area is something you will want to be careful with.

That said, the surface feels nice and looks amazing and the sound of dicerolls are just great (IF you still decide to roll in the playarea ;) )

I dont regret buying the official mat one second and as I mentioned above im now waiting for the bespin mat to complete the full 3x6 table.

Again, it just looks amazing!

If you like how it looks then just get it! Its not a fortune and if you absolutely hate it you can probably sell it to someone or use it for regular board/cardgames.

edit:

Qualitywise I can find nothing bad to say about them, nothing at all.

Ive only had mine for a few weeks though but unless you really abuse it I cant see how it would ever wear or tear.

Mostly, I've just played on finished/varnished wood. (My coffee table and my friend's dining room table.) So the mat will probably seem a little slippery. So I have no clue. Hahahaha! They look super nice! I'm just concerned about it being a skating rink as somebody mentioned earlier in the thread.

The FF mat is good. I bought one myself when faced with your very same conundrum. They are not overly slippery. Just be careful when placing your templates and moving your ships.

Keep in mind that these are more or less the same surface texture as mousepads.

I have heard that the reverse side is sufficiently grippy for normal use.

Yupp, exactly the same as rubber/textile mousepads!

So if you have one of those at home, try your minis on it and see how it feels!

And yeah it can be placed on reverse side and have the rubber as play surface. Very grippy but of course nullifies every reason to get the official mats :)

I have been using a cardboard mat. I went to Hobbytown and found a presentation board (the sort you see at science fairs) that measures 4x3 and folds to 2x3.

It basically has two outer flaps that fold in from both sides to reduce the width by half. I sliced one flap off and now have a 3x3 board that folds to 2x3. I also got a second 4x3 board that I have kept at full size. This is for larger games.

These cost about 8$ or so and have served me well for home games. They also transport passable well as long as the vehicle has enough room.

I do plan on getting a proper game mat soon because I'd like a mat I can roll up, but I have been primarily been building my fleets for a year before starting to look at mats.
