Your first play with a named pilot

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

OK, you are not a green pilot, only inexperienced. You "master" the secrets of selecting a maneuver and not going the wrong lane, roll red dices when firing and so on. You are ready to play like the Big Boys...named pilots !!! But there are so many...

For your first games with named ones my favourites are...

- A wing Jake Farrell. Veeeery simple. Focus, then free boost or barrel roll. Enhancedmobility A wing

- E wing Corran Horn. Double Tap??? That sounds amazing!!! Easy and no aditional rules. And the E wing looks like a toy for Big Boys, a marvel of technology...

Depends on your opponent. If I were a new player facing off against a veteran, I'd want something tanky and reasonably easy to understand. Poe, Miranda, Chewbacca, Night Beast, Dark Curse, TLT Thugs, etc.

When I actually was a new player, my opponents were pretty green too, so I played Soontir Fel a lot. Sure, he's tricky to master, but there were few turrets aside from the occasional Ion (no bigs ships in my tiny meta at the time, and this was before the TLT was released), and predicting and blocking takes a bit of skill to learn. It's not particularly tricky to get around an opponent when they can't shoot effectively out of arc, and you have the highest pilot skill.

Someone easy to understand, and who is powerful without any upgrades would be best, IMO. I think even Corran's double tap is a little difficult to do well for someone so new to the game.

Jake is a good call, and in the same vein, Ture Phennir. Miranda is also a solid choice. So too are Chewbacca, Kenkirk and Tycho. Personally, if I were teaching people named pilot mechanics, I'd start really, really simple: Darth Vader. Not only is he the iconic Star Wars character, but you can't get much simpler to understand than his ability.

I think everybody's first play with a named pilot is with Luke. :P.

For Sure, Luke and Vader are solid choices. And if you fly Scum, Bobba is iconic and a solid choice. Talonbane.Cobra is bad guy with a powerful name and easy to play rules.

For me, the first time was Poe Dameron. I can understand why everyone see him as awesome but I still don't know how to fly him. In my (approx) 8 games he had some two or three kills. Only survived once. So yes, he is potentially powerful but I just can't fly him. My best pilot at the moment is Tycho (with 5 kills in 5 games). And Tycho or Luke are very solid choices for the first timer.

My first was "Dutch" Vander.

What can I say, I love me some Y-Wings! Really need to give Dutch a whirl again sometime...

Rebel scum! My first was Night Beast, obviously.

My first named pilot was Turr Phanir (Interceptor) in a 8 player 35pt single ship game (used 2 game spaces).

When I do a 32pt single ship game giving them Luke+R2-D2 (tanky, forgiving of flight errors and few actions to think about) and I use Guri+Lone Wolf (plenty of actions to demonstrate and won't blow up first combat).

My first named pilot was Wedge. I'll never forget the joy of one shotting Soontir. Sure I went on to loose that match and getting Wedge killed in the process, but I had a lot of fun!

I think my first named list was Luke, Wedge, Arvel and Tycho, all naked, versus Decimator (I think Oicunn) Whisper with some sort of loadout. Won it, just, but only because Whisper parked at r1 of Wedge without a cloak and died in a single hit without shooting...

Interesting, I'm at that stage, not new but only a few games, up for my first tournament next month and going crazy trying to work a 100 point list from 3 x T 65,s 2 x T70, 1 x A wing 3 x Z95 a T wing and the Falcon - oh, and the rebel transport.

First thought was 2 x wings with 2 or 3 z95's with ion pulse missiles, then realised the z's will likely be destroyed before they can fire. Considered Falcom with Chewie pilot and Lando crew, loaded for bear with a fighter (couple of z's or however many X's I could fit in. Or 2 X's with Tycho in the A.......just want to survive the first round and have fun.

Up against 2 or 3 very good players, told to expect multiple TLT's in K's and Tie Phantoms.
