The Art of Objectives

Fleet created with Armada Warlords

First off, I've got to say how much I love the Warlords site for such an attractive way of producing a list. Fab's is great for utility and keeping it all in your collection, but I really like the Warlords' design. Just so simple and lovely.

ANYWAY, my point at hand: assuming that, for now, I'm happy with that fleet as it stands (with some minor adjustments to upgrades) how do I approach objectives? I have picked the selected objectives along the following lines:

Advanced Gunnery: - This seems like an amazing selection for this fleet. It offers a big advantage to anyone with an MC80, but the ability to double-tap from the front arc of an ISD is too juicy. However, depending on circumstances, I can instead make the Demolisher my objective ship: it means I'm giving away fewer points, and it gets double-shots out of one of its lethal side-arcs. The final option is to make the Raider my objective ship if I'm up against lots and lots of squadrons; very few bonus points given away, and it gets to double-tap whole swathes of fighters in a single pass.

Other options, specifically Precision Strike and Most Wanted, offer too much advantage to my opponents, I feel. The last option is Opening Salvo, which could be really good for this list (especially as I'd typically have numerical superiority) - but I think it gives too much to an enemy fleet that relies on red-range broadsides. I'd rather face a single double-firing MC80 which was worth lots of points, I think, than an MC80 and two AFM2s all with two extra red dice on their first shots.

Contested Outpost: - I'm fairly settled on this one as a favourite among the yellows. The ability to dictate the location of the battle, and force enemy fleets to that point, is just too juicy to pass up. However, with the Demolisher, Hyperspace Assault would be an excellent fit - so how do I decide between the two?

Superior Positions: - Normally, I prefer Dangerous Territory, but I've lately switched to Superior Positions because of the huge strategic advantage at deployment - and because, with a fleet including the Demolisher and the surprisingly-manoeuvrable ISD, getting rear-shot arcs is not as tricky as I originally thought. But I've always struggled with the blue objectives, so am definitely up for new ideas.

1. Your thoughts on Adv Gunnery are sound. I would however consider useing Most wanted with the intent that instigator will be your objective ship. This means you can select your opponents flagship to get more dice against and be worth double points while only losing a corvette

2. I would stick with contested outpost

3. Superior positions is likely to backfire due to your lack of fighters. If you run into a squad heavy list (especially rhymerballs) they can milk supioror positions for hundreds of points. I would use Minfields to create a funnel instead

Thank you for some excellent insight.

Minefields is the one that I've tried before and... failed at. I don't know what my malfunction is, I just always seem to use my own minefields much less effectively than my opponent does. Maybe I'm born with it... maybe it's a crippling lack of spatial awareness.

1.Most Wanted

2. Dangerous Territory or Intel Sweep

1.Most Wanted

2. Dangerous Territory or Intel Sweep

I dislike Dangerous Territory. You all tie in points or are 1 token being usually. I find Superior Positions more to my style of play but I am doing something radical with Intel Sweep atm

I would agree with Most Wanted, as you can keep your raider out of trouble easily, while taking the enemy's most potent ship for lots of points, or taking it out of the fight. Your list is mobile and can essentially chose which of your opponents ships to engage.

I'm not so sure about Contested Outpost, again as the ships in your list really want to move, and not be stuck around the outpost. Plus, B-wings and Yavaris would like nothing better than to know where your ships are going to be hanging out...

I'd go with Hyperspace Assault myself. You'll have your opponent on pins and needles until you come out of hyperspace, and then he'll cry.

Superior positions is ok, and you can counter squadrons somewhat by being very aggressive with your ships. But I'd still go with Intel Sweep. Your Raider is an excellent objective ship, and 75 points is quite nice to pocket. :)

Intel sweep is a bit underrated IMO.

Yes, the 75 pts are nice, but many players tend to forget how much this objective can A) limit your opponent's setup and B) limit his maneuver options. In that regard it has some similarities with Fleet Ambush - do it right and it can severely unbalance your opponent. Do it wrong and it can backfire too.
