Preparing for my first tourney: Which build do you recommend?

By MAVERlCK, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi, title says all.

Based on what I have so far in terms of ships/cards, I could put together the following:

BBBBZ (100)

Standard build that I'd like to stack my other ideas against. I'm missing the Z-95 but if that's all I'd need to buy, I'm cool with that.

Wedge's Escort (XXBB) (100)

Wedge Antilles + R2D2 (33)

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Pretty standard point and shoot build. Even with R2D2, Wedge will probably be focused. I intend however to do so on my terms so that my other ships can make the enemy pay for going after Wedge.

Ten's Escort (XXXB) (100)

Ten Numb + Fire Control System (33)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Rookie Pilot (21)

FCS is there to help trigger Ten's ability (When attaching, 1 of your crit results cannot be canceled by defense dice). Biggs is there to allow Ten to stay on the board longer.

We owe you Biggs (98)

Ten Numb + Fire Control System + Marksmanship + Proton Torpedoes (40)

Wedge Antilles + R2D2 (33)
Biggs Darklighter (25)

I imagine Biggs would be focused quick and hard here since Ten and Wedge can dish out some hurt. FCS, Marksmanship and even Proton Torpedos all take advantage of Ten's ability. I could replace Proton Torpedoes for Adv. Torpedoes.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Which one are you most comfortable and familiar with ?

Pretty much still uncomfortable with all of them. I have 3 games under my belt. So far I played as:

Wedge + R2D2

Biggs

Rookie Pilot

Rookie Pilot

BBBB with Proxied FCS for all 4.

Take the Wedge build in that case. Fly what you know and have fun.

If I end up with that build, I think I'd remove R2D2 to replace Red Squadron Pilot for Biggs.

Do you have BB8, he is really good on Wedge ?

Nope. I really don't have much yet.

Okay well Biggs and Wedge go good together. Biggs with R2 could be annoying for your opponent as they have to shoot him and he is harder to kill if he keeps getting his shields back.

In my first tournament I thought that Leebo and Expert Handling were great upgrade cards, because I didn't understand yet that "Free Action", as printed on those cards, didn't really mean "Free".

Learn from my mistakes.

This is the best advice for your first tournament. Flying what you are familiar with will be better for you than something you may believe is better but do not have practice with.

Actually I have equal flying experience with X-Wings as I do with B-Wings. And this is why I was wondering which of those 4 builds (that all exclusively about X's and B's) would seem the strongest.

How many X-Wings do you have? 3 or 4?

Here's an old list, but the concept still makes sense and I think you have the cards for it, if you have the ships.

100 points

PILOTS

Luke Skywalker (33)
X-Wing (28), R2-D2 (4), Draw Their Fire (1)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

Rookie Pilot (21) x 2

Yep know about this one but I don't have Draw Their Fire.

Thanks for you input.

I think the 1st build is probably the strongest. Ten is great but only when you have a card that can trigger his ability every time. Marksmanship is ok, but it takes an action and you actually need to roll focus to trigger it. If you don't have Mangler cannon I'd leave Ten at home. Ten Numb with VI + Mangler is an ace hunter and really a hard counter to Soontir Fel. If Ten isn't using his ability every turn, he really isn't worth his expensive price tag. Its debatable if he is anyway.

Integrated Astromech would be great on Wedge to keep him alive that one extra turn, but it sounds like you don't have the T-70 expansion yet.

Interesting ideas. When talking about Ten Numb with VI + Mangler, would you say that he'd need FCS to become that hard counter to Soontir? Your comments lead me to theory crafting this squad:

Ten Numb + VI + Mangler Cannon (36)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS (26)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS (26)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

If this squad can effectively hunt down Aces while packing a decent punch against beefier targets, I'd be a happy camper.
