Clarifying Recon/Device tokens in Campaign (place versus claim)

By Armandhammer, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Okay, I thought I had this figured out, but Loku’s recon tokens are making me second guess how these character specific tokens work.

1) Saska. Practical solutions and all of her class upgrade cards state to discard the device token. And Battle Technician mentions that you can claim a device token.

When a player claims a token or component, he places it in his play area.

So discarded tokens are ready to be used again when they are claimed using Battle Technician.

Yes?

Enter Loku.

2) Firstly, there’s no explanation as to what happens when a figure is defeated with a recon token on it (or maybe I just can’t find the ruling). Is it returned to Loku’s supply or is it discarded? Same situation with Scouting Report (recon token on a crate).

3) Overwatch states to discard the recon token. Does placing a recon token allow a token to come back into play?

Discarding a token returns it to the supply I believe. The rules say that when Loku places a token he can either move one already on the board or take from his supply. So regardless of whether it's discarded when a figure is defeated Loku can just move it to another figure.

The RRG says when a figure is defeated all of its damage and condition tokens are removed from the board. This is probably intended to remove Loku's tokens as well. Unfortunately most of this is intent but I think the intent is generally pretty clear.

So regardless of whether it's discarded when a figure is defeated Loku can just move it to another figure.

It’s a bummer there isn’t a specific section for discard, though the general rule is:

Deplete: once per mission

Discard: return to game supply

You’re right though, it wouldn’t make any sense if his recon tokens were 1 time use only, especially since he only has 2 tokens.

The only issue I have is with his Overwatch class upgrade which states to “discard the token on this card.”

Is this a risk/reward thing (discarding a token for the mission to interrupt and attack) or is it simply returned to his supply ready to be placed .

I read all references to device/recon tokens as returning them to the supply. Placing/Claiming is a limited resource, when a token is discarded or removed due to defeat/claiming of the object possessing it, the tokens go back to the supply to be used again. Just doesn't make sense otherwise. When you discard a stun token or a damage token they go back to be reused.....
