2016 Store Championship Results

By stmack, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all,

So we're back into FFG's tournament season which means Armada's first Store Championship season! I've seen some reports but no dedicated thread so thought I'd start one where people can post results from their local tournaments so they can be discussed and compared to each others own local results.

Optionally, I also have a site up and running that users can submit tournaments and results and does some basic stats and rankings based on them which may be of use at http://armada.miniranker.com

Aside from that, good luck in your tournaments and can't wait to see some results start flowing in.

Strong effort, loving it.

The coin looks pretty cool, although it doesn't really work well for the game as a fighter activation token. I have since taken to using it for the Star Wars LCG as a Force token

Cool site. We had a tournament last weekend but it was not a store championship. First one in our area and we kept it at 300 pts as wave 2 hadn't come out when we announced the event. It did include wave 2 ships though. I have all the ship builds and stats and match ups for the three rounds would you want that data even though it wasn't a 400 pt tourney?

I played at the FFG flagship in Roseville, MN. Our tournament was dominated by someone who was basically brand new. He had been posting on the local FB group, and has been in the game roughly a month. He went 10-0 all three rounds. I was told he was playing one ISD with Demolisher, then a ton of squadrons.

I personally tried a 3 Scout Frigate build with Dash, Han, and two YT-2400s. It... went okay. I should have bid lower than 394, because that list has real problems with going second. It caused me real problems my first round, lost 3-7. Second round I played a 4 ship Imperial list with minimal fighter screen. Ended up getting 10-0 on that by picking his Advanced Gunnery. Makes for a very valuable ISD when you destroy it. Round three I got rocked 10-0 by Home One with two MKII's. Twice my MC30s came up millimeters short of close range double arcs on Home One. Shooting only red dice, I got swept away fairly quickly by his Home One with Advanced Gunnery. It taught me some lessons about how I should fly my MC30s.

I can report about the first 2016 Store Championship in the Phoenix Arizona area at Empire Games in Mesa on January 9th.

For some background I just recently got into Armada picking up my first starter in early December. I haven't played any other miniature games but with my love of Star Wars I knew this game was for me. I found out one of my good friends from High School played the game and had been to Nations and Worlds last year just missing out on the top 8 I believe at worlds. He helped me a ton and I played my first real game of Armada 2 days before the tournament.

The day of the tournament we were expecting somewhere between 12-20 people showing up as 11 had confirmed online they would be there. It turns out only 3 other people besides myself decided to show so we only had 4 players + the tournament organizer. I guess there was a large X-Wing Store Championship that day that took a lot of the players and a Game of Thrones Tournament that same day. I was disappointing as I was hoping for a large turnout but it meant I made my goal of top 8 and go the acrylic range rulers and top 4 got me the challenge coin without a game being played.

I decided to go for a 2 ISDII fleet and a mini Fireball. I went with option #2 with Motti instead of Vader in the picture you see here.

IMG_5064.jpg

My first game we both had 395 points and I believe he won the coin flip and chose first player. He selected Mine Fields and I have never set up a mine field before. My setup was very poor as almost boxed myself out from flanking my opponent and took a mine to the face of 1 of my ISD's. You can see from the picture my opponent had 2 ISD II's and 1 GSD with no fighter Support. I split my fighter forces and got his GSD down to 1 hitpoint but was unable to finish it off. I diverted my ISD on that side to start to flank to give support to my Flagship that was going up against 2 ISD's!! I started the turn to slowly so my flanking ISD only got off 2 long range shots before the round was over. My Flagship stood up to the onslaught well and I thought he would be safe for turn 6 however I learned the power of Avenger after his first ISD spent all my defense tokens in his first activation. I finished off that ISD and put a lot of damage onto Avenger with around 9 health left but he had a very nice roll with 9-10 damage I believe and my flagship went up in smoke. His remaining ISD survived on just a couple of hitpoints and my flanking ISD was only in long range. I still had a chance to win the game with 1 Firespray I had diverted to try and finish off the GSD with 1 health. I rolled 2 blues just needing 1 hit and got 2 accuracy's, oh well. The final score was 22 MOV in his favor so my first game was a 5-5 loss. All in all I thought I had a good fleet but deployment errors and not finishing off his wounded GSD resulted in a tie. My opponent was a very good sport and unfortunately he was having some migraine issues so he had to withdraw from the tournament.

IMG_5066.jpg

After round 1 I had 5 points, another Empire player had 10-0 the 1 rebel player in the tournament.

Round 2 I was up again the Empire player who was running an ISDII, VSDII, Fireball with around 5 Firespray's I believe. I chose 1st player and he picked minefields. This time I was shown how to setup minefields by my opponent who basically split the board in half. I really wish I had taken a picture of this game but I forgot. My opponent deployed with his VSD and ISD in the corner on 1 side of the minefield. I could really only get 1 ISD to drive down that line to engage both of his ships and the fireball. I deployed my 2nd ISD in the middle knowing it would have to go through the minefield and hit 1-2 mines in order to flank from the side and rear. This time I did better upping my ISD to speed 3 to get around in time for the flank. I selected a squadron command for my 2nd activation and it may have turned the tide in my favor. My opponent had rushed his fighters forward as he has a much stronger fighter wind with 130+ in squads but he was carrying only a single jumpmaster. He left it slightly exposed with no tie advanced in range. I activated 4 of my squads first on turn 2 and was able to alpha strike the jumpmaster and use the rest of my squadrons to engage several of his firesprays. This saved my 1 ISD in front of his ISD and VSD at least 2 turns of fire. by turn 4 my 2nd ISD was now on the rear of his ISD with the VSD to the right of the ISD. I wish I would of had a picture but it was basically a Star Destroyer sandwich turn 5. I activated and finished off the VSDII. He activated and finally was able to finish off my flagship with a finishing ram. My 2nd ISD activated at the beginning of round 6 to finish off his fleeing ISD to take the match. I don't remember my exact MOV but it resulted in an 8-2 for me.

After round 2 I was in 1st with 13 points, 2nd was the imperial player with 12 points and 3rd was the rebel player who received an 8-2 with a bye due to our 4th player withdrawing. The Empire player would receive the same 8-2 bye for a total of 20 points so I knew going in I would need an 8-2 victory in order to take first place.

Round 3 I played the rebel player that was running 1 MC80, 2 AF's with 2 A-Wings and 4 Y-Wings. I was 2nd player and he chose contested outpost. This game was a little more strait forward and I think I fixed some of my deployment mistakes in the prior round. I had my 2 ISD's going speed 1 into the station forcing the rebel player to try and come at me. His maneuvering was not the best and I was able to stop the advance of his AF2's and limited the broadsides from his MC80. With Gunnery teams my ISD's were able to get 2 front arc shots off on almost every turn. By the end of turn 5 his fleet was gone with only the loss of a couple of fighters and I secured a 10-0 to take the tournament.

IMG_5067.jpg

I was pretty shocked considering I had only played 1 real game of Armada and a couple of practice 300 point games with no objectives before the tournament. I owed a ton to my friend for teaching me as much as he could in our 1 practice game and I got a much better understanding of the game. I was lucky to overcome a couple of deployment mistakes in my first game. Had this been a more attended tournament I probably wouldn't have taken first place but I think I still could have placed in the top 4. All in all I still got to play 3 games and it was a lot of fun. All of my opponents were very nice people and friendly with me being a newbie. The prizes were very nice and I got the nice Store Championship plaque, not bad for my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Armada games.

Ya for sure, either post it in the thread or feel free to add it to the site directly!

Nice site.

Any chance you can add a column or flag for what point total was used for a tournament?

Hmm possibly, do people generally feel like 300pt tournaments will be a thing moving forward in more casual tournaments? or will they fade out completely after the next wave?

I feel they're already an exception to the rule...

... 90% of the time, we're only hearing about FFG OPE tournaments, even if they are Casual - and they're supposed to be 400pts.

Here’s the results from Saturday January 23 Rescue at Hoth event at Comic Quest in Evansville, IN. This was a 300 pt tournament using wave 1 and 2. The tournament scoring used the old Margin of Victory. Only two people played Rebels (Gus and Ivan) everyone else played Imperials.

The matchings were as follows:

1st Round:

Nick vs JT 10-0

Brad vs Erik 8-2

Andy vs Gus 5-5

Jared v Ivan 6-4

2nd Round:

Nick vs Brad 9-1

Jared vs Andy 7-3

Ivan vs Gus 9-1

JT vs Erik 10-0

3rd Round:

Nick vs Ivan 6-4

Jared vs JT 10-0

Brad vs Andy 9-1

Gus vs Erik 8-2

Overall Standings and Stats:

Nick: 25pts; MoV(524)

Jared:23pts; MoV(405)

Brad: 18pts;MoV(299)

Ivan: 17pts; MoV(166)

Gus: 14pts; MoV(132)

JT: 10pts; MoV(301)

Andy: 9pts; MoV(9)

It caused me real problems my first round, lost 3-7.

Oh, did you lose your first round? What a sad, terrible shame.

Nice site.

Hmm possibly, do people generally feel like 300pt tournaments will be a thing moving forward in more casual tournaments? or will they fade out completely after the next wave?

We did 300 pts solely because we didn't know when we scheduled it back in November when Wave 2 was going to be released and what changes to tournament play were going to be made. I don't see 300 pts being a standard for casual play. Most casual play are looking for less constricting rules and perhaps more scenarios.

I think 300pts will fade out to non-existance, but there's still a few months of data on your site that is 300pts from pre-wave 2 (which is my main issue). You're also presuming that there's no 'epic' format on the horizon or other alternate formats (teams of some various point composition).

It might be an idea to also compile a list of upcoming Store Championships. We have the list of where, but dates and times are still obscure. Here's what I've posted and found on the Organized Play board (links to threads):

There may be more. Please let me know about them in this thread, and I'll try to keep this list up-to-date.

All the players I know use casual play to hone their lists for the real thing, so no one plays 300pts anymore. If I were building something, I wouldn't support a 300 point option right now.

Nice site, loves me some data crunching.

to add to your list, tower of games in Virginia beach is hosting their store tourney Feb 23.

Thanks, I'll add them in.

I used to live in San Antonio (My wife's a West Saaiide native westside.gif.)

I didn't do too much gaming back then, though I might have stopped in at that Alien Worlds in Westlakes mall once. I certainly stopped in at Dragon Lair. Wasn't there also a pretty big game store up on Tezel rd? Central Command?

I may be visiting SA sometime this summer. If I can manage it, maybe I'll schlepp my fleet along.

Not that I know of, but I've only lived here for a little over a year.

Actually... Now that I think of it, I think I did go looking for that place when I moved, and it was closed if I'm not mistake. Seem to remember driving up and down Tezel Rd looking for it.

Anyway... If you come down you should definitely look us up. Alamo City Fleet Command on Facebook. If you don't bring your stuff, don't worry, we always keep plenty of extra around to loan out. Helps with luring in the noobs... ;)

Here are the results from Sunday's Store Championship at Dice Age Games in Vancouver, WA:

Grand Battle in Dac System: Empire Claims Victory

I didn't get all the lists, but hopefully I'll be able to flesh it out as more information rolls in. Still, I got the top lists.

I'm attending the PA one and one unlisted one in Philly (Redcaps) next month. I can either get the guys running it to pass along the data (they are on the forums themselves) or I can acquire it from them.

Hey,

Last night I tried adding the lists from the Dice Age Store Championship to the ranker. It keeps telling me that the lists are accepted, but then they're not showing up. I tried it again this morning, and still no-show.

Hmm, weird thanks for trying, I'll look into it, had heard similar reports before but thought it was fixed.
