The urge to be separate from the meta

By Ayleron, in X-Wing

That khiraxz list is awesome.

I see a couple of things.

This one for example:

That's certainly a flipside, many of us have invented the same wheel, because the tools were right there.

The other side is that I totally suck at deck building. No matter how closely I look I tend to put together terrible combinations that after a few turns revels how foolish it was. Sigh... So I for one hope people take it as a complement when I use the same list as theirs or one from the internet. I agree mirror matches aren't as much fun (they stink) but I like something that works together win or loose.

I usually fly things that are not considered competitive, just to see how many people I can beat with it. I've done pretty well so far.

I am thinking of just skipping the whole tournament scene lately, though. Going for these "competitive" games of meta only lists is not really what I find fun these days. I'd rather just get with my buddies (who don't go to tournaments) and play some scenarios.

I haven't been to a competitive game in a few months now. I'm REALLY enjoying playing Epic games with friends. I skipped the Rebel epic ships, but have bought BOTH Imperial ships and WOW are they fun! Already planning my next epic night with friends...

Stone37 - Winter Park? Only a couple of hours. I wish I had a good excuse to be up there when you play. Other than Universal because when i go there it's usually until closing. :D

Couple of Hours & 'up there'....you playing at Adventure Game and Cool Stuff down in SFLA, perchance?

I still remember going to my first non-store champ/regional tournament last Octoberish. I brought a Defender/2 Advanced list I had been cooking up.

The number of times I had to explain what Vessery/Stele/Colzet did was hilarious. Something so off the wall threw most of my opponents off guard and eventually lead to a third place finish (still tied for my best finish ever). The element of surprise can be a huge deal in this game.

People practice against and anticipate the meta lists. Lists from left field really shock people at times.

I've been to Sci-Fi City Orlando a few times but only in passing and never played. I've played at Cool Stuff and Docking Bay 94. Also I've been to Adventure Game and found out I know the people there from years ago. Too many to count but I haven't played there.

I stopped by PPF which is closer to me. I've been told by some to be sure to watch my stuff if I go there. Don't know if that's true. One guy there was really nice and helpful. The manager however always says how terrible Star Wars and X-Wing specifically are. Telling you how bad it is and how he'll never run an X-Wing event, etc. He promotes Attack Wing a lot though. They have a new/nice game room but he makes you feel unwelcome. So with that and what the other guy said I don't go or buy from them.

It takes me about an hour plus to go to Cool Stuff so maybe 2 hours isn't so bad for an Epic game. :) I honestly don't play very often to I promise to be a good looser; but I may shout Woo Hoo if I actually win.

I'm actually building a list with this right now. What are good EPT options (in general, actually) for Steele and Vessery in this build? I am thinking VI for Vess and Predator for Steele.

Nope, I run whatever I have been practicing with and am comfortable flying.

LT4GuFu.gif

This is ultimately the best advice. I often find myself flying Starvipers at more competitive events because I KNOW that ship. I fly it a lot. That is 99% of the reason that I do well with it.

yeah this is the way to do it. ive flown a lot of miranda when i play rebels and sure shes a big regen platform, but going aggressive and nailing someone with a surprise four dice primary in their own TLT donut, or the perfect SLAM... thats different

any ship is a cool elite badass if you have some imagination, and fly it enough

Ha! I was too.

How about this?

Except don't you want Stele to shoot before Vessery?

Lieutenant Colzet (23)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x1 (0)

Maarek Stele (27)
Predator (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

Colonel Vessery (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

fly whatever is fun to you.

if that also is a popular list, then so be it. though I admit I feel the urge to change quite often, too.

for example, I flew whisper, soonts and yorr for nearly a year I think. when palp and palp-aces came out, my shuttle/my list was nothing (so) special anymore.. at least to me. so I changed. about 180°.

that is a personal thing, however. if you feel good flying a certain list and its fun, just don't bother with people telling you otherwise.

..unless it involves flying e-wings. those things are really ugly. nobody should be allowed to fly these :D

One of my problems is that since I am relatively new to the game, i want to try everything out. I know what Pilots I love ( coughFelcough ), but there are so many options out and combinations that I feel like I could be missing out on something I love even more.

For instance, last night I played with Juno ( TIE/adv: TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Juke, and MKII [had a point to spare] ) and absolutely loved her. It was such an enjoyable ship to fly and had absolutely zero feel bad moments. Adjusting maneuvers on the fly, ALWAYS getting at least 2 hits, and always having that evade token really helped take my awful run of dice luck out of the equation.

I cant settle on a list until i feel like ive tried every combination.

thats a pretty sick list man, and its only getting better with vets. im a big stele fan looking at what he can remove from under their shields, and trolzet is great

i mean now you could go really rude, something like

Lieutenant Colzet (23)
Cluster Missiles (4)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
Guidance Chips (0)
TIE/x1 (0)
Maarek Stele (27)
Predator (3)
Advanced Homing Missiles (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x1 (0)
Colonel Vessery (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Tractor Beam (1)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/D (0)

So...I have enjoyed reading this thread and stealing ideas.

Here's a list that I think is very interesting: http://tinyurl.com/zuz4744

I see lots of Palpmobiles and they're often flown in a group with squadmates. I also see lots of Rebel mini swarms.

At the last FLGS tournament I attended, there were 3 TIE swarms. Most everyone else flew Decimators + 1 other ship.

While I agree this list has lots of issues to avoid, it looks interesting to me and I think it would do well in my local meta.

thats just a link to the squad builder dude

I will admit, a good feeling is bringing a list in wave 5 that made people say "you can't do that... Wait, you can?!"

Rhymer

Procket

Procket

Stealth device

VI

Jonus

Siesmic charge

Delta w/HLC

I would get to r2, and procket with 5 dice. With people saying "Prockets are R1 only!" "Not with Rhymer's ability"

"Rhymer only has 2 agility!" "Stealth device"

Well... Uh...

Then the Fat Han or Deci would take 5 to 3 hits depending and leaving it wide open to Delta's HLC. Rhymer's quickly got shot at after they figured out the threat, but he usually got another 4 hit rocket off before death.

Oh ****!

DUH!

That's how you do Major Rhymer. That's like 35-36 points. Holy freakin crap. This guy is a genius.

I am fueled by jank

Yup, I live in Winter Park. We have a good little X-wing scene here. Message me if you're ever planning to be in the area and are looking for a game.

There use to be a Cool Stuff Winter Park location. Waterford (where it moved) is too far away. I'm working on getting a new location for our group at a little game shop that just opened up near where CSG Winter Park once was.

I see a few people have replied about my neck of the woods. If anyone is looking for an X-wing group in the Winter Park (and surrounding) areas, shoot me a message.

When was the last time you were there? I am trying to figure out who that manager is because that's just crap. If it's not the big guy with the tats (Chris) then whomever it is needs a throat punch. Also, which PPF? There is one on University and Sterling near Home Depot. (but they don't do squat there but magic anyway)

Cool Stuff and AGS have a solid group, good guys. Also, try hey wanna play on Broward between University and 441. Tell Larry, the owner, that Erik sent ya.

I'd play with you, but I moved to Chicago ;)

Those are the exact EPTs I used. VI allows Vessery to strip shields before Stele applies the crits. It was brutal. Struggles a bit against mini swarm lists.

I'm very anti-meta, and have been most of the time I've been playing x-wing.

It can be tough to stay the course at times, as anyone with relative or better skill than you with a meta list is sure to win most of the time.

I know some people feel that making a meta list your own makes it unique, but not really in my book. I don't care how many different ways you can make a palpmobile and 2 aces list, it's still that list in the end to me.

That's the biggest difference between casual and competitive play in my opinion. When I'm playing casually, I'll see tons of very unique lists that people are running, but the more competitive it gets, that gets fewer and far between unfortunately.

This just in... I just got 6th place in the Gamecastle Santa Clara Store championships (out of 51) with a non brobot, non TLT Scum list.

Proton Torpedo/EM Drea Renthal with ion turret and R4 B11

Black Sun Ace with Predator and a failsafed Hotshot Blaster

Ka'atto Leacheros with crackshot and a failsafed hotshot blaster

Binare Pirate with glittrrstim.

I don't follow the meta too closely, but then I never play tournaments, either. I'd LIKE to, now, that I feel more confident, but I always work on tourney days.

I haven't flown flown much of power-meta lists: Dash & Corran, Phantom and Decimator, etc... I flew Emperor and a couple aces once and didn't really care for it. I just like to fly what is fun, try new things, different synergies.

I love winning but I love playing more, trying new lists, new SHIPS! I collect X-wing religiously and still haven't tried all the pilots and upgrade cards.

Lately my fun lists have been:
