Ship Size

By JediPartisan, in X-Wing Rules Questions

We currently have 4 Huge ships, 9 Large ships and many Small ships.

That being said, what is a Medium ship and will we ever see one?

I would have thought the K-wing and ship around its size would qualify, but it is classed as a Small ship. If FFG ever does make a Medium ship, would the base be between the Large and Small bases in size?

Anyone?

It is extremely unlikely that we will ever have a medium ship. We've already gotten too many small ships that could have been mediums.

The large ships where actually called medium back when the Millenium Falcon and Slave One where released. I'm not sure if it was changed before they first hit stores, but FFG defenitley called them medium when they where first revealed.

This. I remembering there being confusion when the Falcon and Firespray came out and they were called large ships. We assumed there'd be a medium size coming between the two current sizes, but then we got huge ships and that was that.

It does seem like there's enough variety now to accommodate Small, Medium and Large. Although the current set-up conveniently allows them to cover three ship sizes with only two bases (with large and huge sharing roughly the same one).

I doubt it for a couple reason. The key to me is that the bases and components all line up right now. A large base is twice a small base. A 1 straight is equal to a small base, a 2 straight is equal to a large base. Halving the difference between the small and the large base to create a medium base kills all that symmetry and I couldnt see it happening. Now, id like them to release a stationary star destroyer flank that just sits on the edge of the map and is controlled by a player :)

I would have really been nice if they had done medium bases to begin with, but there are too many ships already out that should have been mediums for them to do it now.

Ships that could have been medium

HWK

Defender (many depictions of the defender have the wings being a bit longer)

Outrider

Aggressor

Star Viper

Punisher

K-Wing

Jumpmaster (maybe? haven't actually seen one yet to compare size)

An extra-large size to cover the Decimator and Ghost would have been nice too, but an 80mm base might have caused actual game issues.

How big would a medium base actually be? Would it have twice the area of a small base and half the area of a large base or would you just make the sides the average of the two? To me averaging the area would make the most sense but then the medium is 1.4ish small bases (or simply the small base's diagonal) wide and is that really enough to require introducing the new base? Incidentally if the medium base's sides were a small base's diagonal then the large ship's sides should be the medium ship's diagonal; assuming they are actually square anyway.

I'm also wondering if the speed increases for the larger bases had been recognized from the start. What does that mean? It means that if a small and large ship both perform a 1 straight the nose of the large ship moves 1.5 times further than the nose of the small ship. This is why you'll often see Engine Upgrades on large ships far more than small ships because they get so much more movement out of them.

If the shuttle counts then does the mysterious and enigmatic "Squad Mate"? :P
