Outside Resources for Improving Your Game?

By JediAutobot, in X-Wing

We have some great guides on here, great videos out there and great articles written on here, all about X-Wing. But have you ever read or seen something that helped your game that was not an X-Wing resource? For example did you read something about chess that you applied to the game? I would love to hear what you guys have to say.

I have not read anything specifically to help me, but I have used principles from other games. I usually suffer from tunnel vision during the planning and activation phases, but sometimes I pay close attention to how much my opponent turns the dial for a particular ship (or not at all)...if they eye a certain path between obstacles to see if it will clear...what templates they pick up for their next ship while I am activating one of mine. These things are essentially principles from Poker and other games where you just have to pay attention to your opponent. Each of them can give me clues and insight into what maneuvers they are most likely doing and helps me get into their mind. Another thing I pay attention to is any type of table talk from my opponent.

I also do my fair share of my thinking out loud immediately after each maneuver and I usually talk about it with my opponent (if it wasn't obvious or surprised surprised them). I also tend to think out loud for casual games because I treat them as a learning experience, so this isn't a one way street. They are things that I never see talked about, but tend to apply to games I play.

This is why I always turn my dial randomly a few times before I select my maneuver, even if I'm doing the same maneuver as last round. And also don't pick up my templates until it's my turn to move a ship.

I watch Star Wars the movies to see how they pew pew pew and I try to be like Luke and Poe

This is a great guide for wargaming in general: http://kallend.net/40k/guide/

It's about 40k, which I don't even play, but the concepts within can be applied to most tabletop wargames that are asymmetrical, turn-based and involve restricted range bands and movement.
