How many specialization does your character have?

By Kaigen, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Been part of a campaign thats been running more of less straight since late 2013, and a few of the characters are north of 2k in exp.

My character is the specialization/talent champ, as I made a conscious attempt to focus on talents over skills.

His specializations: Scoundrel/Pilot/Gunslinger/Exile/Emergent/Jedi Starfighter Ace/Shadow/Artisan (no, not kidding)

Will likely add a lightsaber form or two before its all said and done.

At just a hair under 1000 xp, my character is a Scoundrel, Commando, Gadgeteer, Rigger. And I'll be picking up Pilot once I'm deeper into the rigger tree.

Upon reflecting on my last character, my Politico, I spread out to multiple specializations way too fast. The character was fun, but a bit too diluted too quickly. So this time around, I'll pick the gimmick of the tree (for example with my Tech, Bad Motivator and Contraption) and work my way there first before picking up a new tree. I'm alllllllmost there, so I'll start thinking about picking up Outlaw Tech in a couple of weeks or so.

Basically I'm still working on the coolness and functionality of the character versus the longevity of the game.

Keep in mind we've played our characters more of less non-stop since the EotE book first came out.

Here's mine

Cayden Feyd -- Scoundrel/FS Exile/Pilot/Jedi Starfighter Ace/FS Emergent/Gunslinger/Shadow/Artisan

The most I've experienced is: Ace (Pilot, Force-Sensitive Emergent, Shii-Cho Knight, Protector, Shien Expert).

I am mostly the GM and the couple of characters I have played as a player has only had one each so far.

My players in my campaign however have 1, 1, 2 and 3, so an average of about 2. One is a Mechanic , another is an Assassin , one is a Gunslinger/Gadgeteer and the last regular player is a Merenary Soldier/Medic/Force Sensitive Emergent .

Guest players have all had 1 spec.

We run shorter campaigns that are 6-10 sessions each. XP Progression varies some from campaign to campaign, but my six players usually have two by the end. The record was four.

In one campaign I wanted to diversify the characters some, so let the players select a free spec after one session. Most of them still ended up with two at the end of that campaign, although that is where the record came from.

My current table is as follows (at about the 300xp mark):

Smuggler Scoundrel/Slicer/FSExile

Droid Shii-Cho Knight (long story)/Politico

Wookiee Outlaw Tech/Mechanic

Chadra-Fan Doctor

Wow, some big numbers here and there. Are characters still fun with so many specs?

My character 3-BRT (or Ebert for his friends) is relatively new and has but 100xp under his belt. Right now he is an analyst but eventually he will brach out to propogandist for a few extra shticks. However I wouldn't want to add too many more additional specs to him seeing how it wouldn't fit the concept I thought up for him. Well, perhaps Scholar might be interesting but after that Inwould retire him and pick a new character to explore a new path with...

Okay, I'm stupid - I just said that and I'm repeating myself. Looks like senility is setting in. . . .

I think it's a balancing act between being broad enough that you can contribute in interesting ways to a variety of encounters. My current Technician/Mechanic doesn't use its talents much unless we're participating in a vehicle encounter, which aren't super frequent. On the other hand, if it gets to the point where my astromech is taking Politico or Figurehead, something has probably gone terribly awry.
