X-Wing System Open voting: how will you pick, and why?

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

One of the neat features of the X-Wing System Open is that they'll be opening it up for players to vote for ships that the final eight must use. I'm curious which ships people are wanting to see, and why? I'm assuming that the voting will just be for a base model, and not specific pilots.

Here are my picks, and the reasoning for it.

Rebels: HWK-290

A very tough dial and pilots who are all good in specific ways, but still a lot of ways to build it out and no one build is overpowering (though KO's Juking Kyle build may test that).

Imperials: Firespray

I'll admit that I can see a case for the TIE Punisher and TIE Bomber here. In all three cases, the ships are potential point traps without any particularly dominating pilots, but the Firespray seems like it sees the least amount of use on the Imperial side.

Scum: YV-666

A lot of people may point to the Scyk, and I'll admit that it's tempting. But the YV-666 has a tricky dial, interesting firing arcs, and can be a potential trap if you load too many points into it, so it'll be interesting to see how players approach it when building their list.

Considering KO just won a store championship with Kyle Katarn, if he decides to go to this, I give him a pretty healthy chance of winning, ha.

Rebels: A-Wings

Imperials: TIE Bombers

Scum: StarVipers

Because they're all fun, dammit.

What is this magical Kyle Kartan build?

Rebels: HWK. I think using a HWK will force some creativity.

Imperials: Punisher. Bombers are getting some stuff with Veterans, and besides, the cost of the Punisher forces a lot of changes to a squad.

Scum: Such a toss up. Leaning toward StarViper.

Scyk

Punisher

HWK (rebels)

Yep. Kyle packs Juke, TLT and Jan Ors crew to give evade tokens to both himself and Poe Dameron (who also has Juke, plus a Comms Relay). Meanwhile, a stressbot will double-stress any critical targets, preventing them from having the focus tokens needed to convert their Juked evade results.

One thing to consider is that if we choose a relatively cheap ship, such as the Scyk, then the players will still be able to fill out most of their list with other strong ships. On the other hand, choosing a higher point value ship like the YV-666 or the Imperial Firespray means they have to really build their whole list around using that ship effectively.

For that reason alone, I'm really tempted by the YV-666 and Imperial Firespray suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't think there's an equivalent Rebel ship to those right now.

For lack of a better option, I think I'd fall back on the T-65 X-Wing as the Rebel choice. It's the ship that started it all, so it deserves to see play at top tables for the first time in a long, long time.

I didn't particularly want to pick the X-wing, because $#@! Biggs.

Scyk, hwk and tie interceptor. So that we can heavily congratulate anyone who beats an imperial list.

I hope the voting is blind with results hidden until the end. It would make it more interesting.

I'm voting for the 2400 that way all the games suck.

Rebels: HWK 90. Its such an under rated ship, an I like seeing them on the table.

Empire: Tie Interdiction / FFG Punisher. Its an expensive ship to build a good squad around.

Scum: Scyk. Because its one of my favorites and I love to see them on the table more.

T-65 X-Wing (because it's as Star Wars as you can get, and it sees less play than it should), TIE Bomber (only OT TIE that is rarely used) and M3-A Interceptor (because it's nice and small and has a cannon).

I feel very inclined to pick ships that are rarely on tournament tables for being "bad" ships.

I want to see what these world class players are able to do with these underused ships. And to that effect I'd probably pick....

Rebels: HWK

Imperials: TIE Bomber

Scum: Scyk

Valid points but Im sticking to the Scyk for my Scum choice I just love em too much not to ever see them

Rebels: E-Wing

This ship seems like the worst rebel ship to me, and if forced, I would guess that MOST players would bring Corran Horn. Countering this would be do-able. It would also suck up a ton of points.

Imperials: Decimator. I know they are powerful, but I also expect Palp + Aces, and a Decimator makes this extremely difficult. It can be done if you go with just one ace, or non-named, moderate PS ships. This would mess with the meta in a huge way.

Scum: Aggressor. IG-88 is going to have a difficult time beating pilot skills available with the E-Wing and Decimators. This could be the worst bro-bots showing ever! also they are crazy expensive as well, and would seriously mess with anyone trying to make a normal scum list.

IMPERIALS: Tie Defenders, Firespray, Shuttle

REBELS: HWK, E Wing, T-65

SCUM: HWK, Scyk, YV-666, Firespray

If we want point traps, the Ghost will be out by then. 37ish points for the cheapest pilots, and a ship begging for upgrades.

Rebel: HWK 290 - Easy choice because it's weak-ish and weird. And so rare in Rebel lists these days.

Imperial: Firespray - Puts paid to the dead boring way Imp lists are heading. No Palp/Aces is a good thing.

Scum: YV666 - I don't play Scum so I don't really understand their list building. But I love the options that the 666 brings to the table.

Definitely the Syck.

Lol, yes! Imperial Firespray. Lol, what a big middle finger! hahahhahah.

Btw, Palp Vader Bounty Hunter is easily a real thing.

Firespray because ICONIC

B-wing because REASONS ©

Starviper, because it can be extraordinary FUn against not-super-ps-aces

but the Firespray seems like it sees the least amount of use on the Imperial side.

Because it's not really an Imperial ship, AND it sucks.

B-wing, Tie Phantom and Starviper, because those are my favorites...
