Astomechs- Who's whose?

By Ccwebb, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Having a hard time finding which Astromech goes to which pilot. I am basing this first from the movies then game play. I know Wedge has traditional had a red colored Astromech, but there doesn't seem to be one in the game. Other pilots it is hard to tell what they had riding 'back seat'. So in lieu of the movies, then we go to the books, then preferences in the game.

Which pilot gets which Asto droid?

Luke - R2-D2

Porkins - R5-D8

Biggs-

Wedge-

Garven- R5-K6

Hobbie-

Tarin-

Wes-

R2-D2

R2-F2

R5-K6

R5-D8

R2-D6

R3-A2

R4-D6

R5-P9

R7-T1

Wedge was G8 I think. Corran had whistler.

Ever think how the naming conventions for droids seems odd. We have the R2 series and so on but if they stick to the letter-number second designation then you could only really have 260 units. So does that mean there are thousands of R2-D2's out there? Also, other pilots give their droids nicknames like Gate or Whistler but Luke just calls his R2 which is basically like calling him Smith.

If you're looking for a red astromech, Targeting Astromech might fit the bill (Although game wise he fits MUCH better on Hobbie).

It says on the Blackmoon Squadron Pilot card that the e-wing was designed originally just for R7 Astros....but I believe Corran's Whistler was an R2 astromech.

Garven Dreis is R5-K6.

Poe - R5-P9 and don't try to tell me otherwise.

Lore-wise, there's not much matching left to do. According to Wookieepedia:

R2-F2 - invented by FFG
R5-K6 - Garven Dreis
R2-D6 - Wedge (briefly)
R3-A2 - unknown, present at Hoth base
R4-D6 - unknown, present at Yavin base
R5-P9 - Ekelarc Yong (Gray 3 at Battle of Endor)
R7-T1 - Luke (briefly)

Does that look like R2-F2 in the background? I realize that FFG created the droid for the game, but maybe based on this...

Biggs droid was R2-Q2, but they're both R2 units so I think it's fine if u designate him that droid.

OK, with the movie lore established, what about good in-game match-ups? Here's a few to start off with

Poe Dameron - R5-P9

Garven Dries - R5-P9

Tarn Mison - T7

Hobbie - Targeting Astromech

Red Ace - R2-D2

Any other cool combos?

R5-P9 is counter intuitive on Garven. Garven really wants to spend his Focus and R5-P9 really wants you to keep it.

R3-A2 is also really good on Hobbie. R5-D8 on Porkins. BB-8 on Wedge. R4-D6 on Biggs.

You would have 260 series of droids and each series could have 260 uniquely named droids. That's like 67,600 unique droids.

I should be asleep.

True, Spending a Focus on R5-P9 only really makes sense if you have Mouldy Crow nearby to bank the Focus token.

Whistler was an R2 unit but then Corran was flying an X-wing in Rogue Squadron.

Actually, it's not bad with Wedge either - take Stay On Target and get to reset your maneuver dial at PS9 and get a target lock as a free bonus.
