Announcing X-Wing System Open!

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Why nothing in the major cities on the east, west, or south?

Honestly, does anyone think that FFG is picking the midwest to have these events at, simply because they don't like other parts of the country or something?

Does it not occur to people that maybe, just maybe, they're having them where they are because the logistics don't work somewhere else?

Edit: I mean I get people wishing they had them somewhere else and even making a comment about it... But it seems like some people honestly think they're doing this to spite the rest of the US and Canada or something.

I'm not saying they don't like the rest of the country, just pointing out that if they are trying to take the next step in competitive organized play, they need to branch out a bit. Since they already have so many events near them, this would've been an excellent opportunity to have a large event in Atlanta, or Vegas, or Dallas, etc. I'm sure someone will say "well maybe they will in the future", and that may be true, but my point is this was a golden opportunity since this is a whole new concept to of an event to begin with.

They're not hosting these things (World's aside anyway) themselves though, FFG Organized Play is a relatively tiny part of the company. They don't have the manpower to host their own major events like this all around the country, and World's only works because, as I understand it, basically the entire company is involved in some capacity that week/weekend. It's an unfortunate circumstance that the most reasonable events to partner with, attendance and orientation wise, are all located in the north/central US.

That's a very interesting tournament structure. As far as I can tell, playing around with a Swiss triangle, the entire top 16 on the second day if the tournament will be 3-0, with tie breakers deciding the top 8.

more US tournaments in IL, nothing for Canada.

Nothing for this series this year. Next year. Not that it matters as I'm sure it will be Toronto.

cool prizes, except there in aurabesh...

More importantly I want to know which country is most offended by which planet they've been affiliated with!

The Danes (Naboo) or the Poles (Endor)? ;)

all Australian players are :( or

Just going to start registering my disappointment that Australia got shafted on every page. We had a great turn out at our regionals and our nationals. I would be very interested to hear from FFG why they excluded us (and all of Asia I should add) from this opportunity.

Wow what a tournament. But at my age and work don't think I can find the time to travel to Schaumburg to even participate in this event.

Why is two months notice too short though?

For one, I imagine that if you were to try to book hotel space at this point you'd be disappointed at your selection, the Adepticon 2016 hotel block opened last May. You don't really plan to attend an event like this on a whim, and for most people 2 months is definitely on a whim.

Plenty of space I can find in the 500 Euro section for 5 nights, not too shabby I think?

What I find weird: While the new format they want to do for the final looks pretty interesting and fun, why qualify for it using the standard format? (100 points single squad).

So, is the registration for the US one even possible, or is it a kinda, show up and hope for the best?

Just registered last night. I had no problems getting registered and there were still 200 spots available for day 1 and 45 for the Hangar Bay side event.

Ah, well I know what I'll be doing when I get home then. Need to plan out my gen con trip as well... Wasn't expecting this kinda tournament just yet.

It likely has to do with the Australian distributor.

Apologies for asking in case it already came up, however I couldn't find any information on this.

1 - 256 players is quite a lot, is there any information how many rounds will be held and how many will make it through the cut to day 2?

2 - just to be clear, for the 8 main events you can bring any list you like, but for the day 2 side events you have to bring 2 lists, where you choose between them each game, correct? In case you make it to the Top 8 in London you have to build 3 squads, I got that I guess.

Thanks a lot for clarifying :)

Yes but that doesn't mean you move to a different part of the country. You go where it makes the most sense which doesn't have much to do with where the event is.

adepticon is devoted to miniature gaming, as opposed to most other cons where are a mix of table top gaming, comics, movies, cosplay, ect... So if you're going to expand you go to where your money will have the biggest impact.

Is there any cons on the east or west coast that will draw more miniature gamers then Adepticon?

I'd love to see 15 major events in the US. But FFG isn't that big of a company so they have to spend their money to show up where they'll get the best return on the investment.

It says in here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/1/27/open-briefing/

Each X-Wing System Open features a main event that is split into two segments—the initial day and the final day. Some System Open events have a duplicate initial day to allow for increased participation. Importantly, players cannot enter both initial days under any circumstances.

On the initial day(s) of the main event, players will compete in six rounds, accumulating tournament points.

After six rounds, players who have accumulated 18 or more tournament points will advance to the final day. On the final day, all of those players will compete in three more rounds of play. The top 8 players by overall record will then be placed in a single-elimination bracket. After three rounds of single-elimination, the Champion will be crowned and invited to the Coruscant Invitational!

The Hoth Open outside Chicago has two initial days of 256 players each for a total of 512 unique players in the tournament. The final day probably will have about 32 players I'd assume. Pretty sure you only need one list for the Hoth Open. The Hangar Bay side event is what requires two lists because it's doing the crazy "look at your opponent's two lists, he looks at your two lists, both of you secretly choose one to use" format.

Personally, if they expand to 16 next year, I hope they keep the majority of the events international.

The short notice nature of these events likely had to do with getting confirmation from Celebration.

Can't make the US event. I guess I'll just have to settle for having fun playing the game every week with my great group of local players, like I've been doing before I knew this event existed.

No matter when or where they scheduled it, it would prevent people from going. Do it in summer? "But I already have family vacations booked!" Or "But that's con season!" Later than that runs into GenCon and DragonCon.

You're simply not going to be able to attend every event they throw. And you can't expect them to plan like you could.

That sounds like a challenge DailyRich.

****, Lothal probably is in my examination period. Else I will have to convice some people to go to Comic Con with me. Its a bit weird, I have no interest in Comic Con, but I love this concept, the price support, everything!

But it's a **** move to announce an event two months before it happens at a convention that people* booked hotels for a year ago. Airfare and hotels at this stage in the game are going to be pricier than they could have been several months ago. Nearby hotel rooms might be more scarce, too. That's a big reason this announcement is a problem.

Besides all that, this event (between the Open and the Hangar Bay events) is getting better prize support than any event in X-Wing history, even Worlds. So it's naturally going to be sought after a little more by the player base. At least with other events like GenCon, people probably wanted to go anyway because it's such a well-traveled event (61,500 people last year). AdeptiCon only gets a few thousand so it's not likely that many players planned ahead of time on going to it. I'm sure AdeptiCon loves getting the extra business, but the late start puts X-Wing players at a disadvantage for the biggest set of tournaments of the year.

I dunno, probably the US was an afterthought.

US players don't get to complain about this one to be honest, they've been spoiled enough by FFG (Where is *my* Poe AA?!). It's time for someone else to get some goodies.

The people who *do* have legit complaints though are the poor dudes of Asia and Australia. Still no idea why they got left out, surely logistics isn't really that much of a problem.
