Announcing X-Wing System Open!

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

First try this in Europe, if it's a hit, see if Australia and Asia can get added next year.

Might be a costly gamble otherwise.

Really? I thought FFG always passed on the costs of kits and such to the vendor? The most they'd have to pay for is plane tickets and accommodation for a couple players, which even from the other side of the world doesn't sound like a deal-breaker to a company the size of FFG. It would also prevent them from totally alienating players from that side of the world which seems to make it worth it just for PR purposes IMO.

Some distributors in Europe have sent the winners of Nationals to Worlds, some haven't. Possibly there's a same situation here, or maybe the relationship with the distributor is about to change (such as this week when Asmodee bought the distributor for Scandinavia and the benelux, only Denmark got a tournament).

These events look more as if they or the local distributor rented space at the venues, so the money either is on FFG, meaning they gamble, or on the local distributor, who might not have been willing to put the money down.

It sucks, but hopefully this is successful enough that it gets a lot broader in the future. This could be an exciting addition to the competetive cycle with a good spin on the whole thing.

That's a big reason this announcement is a problem.

Do you think they'll have problems getting filling the event? Because if they do, then there is no problem at all. Just that some people who may of wanted to go can't. But it's not like anyone has some special right or deserves to attend over someone else.

I'm fairly sure that FFG announced this as soon as they were able to, there really isn't much more you can expect of them. It's not like they can announce something that isn't even set up yet...

Or do you expect them to say "We're thinking of having a major tournament at some point in the next 6 months, at some location that hasn't been decided yet, and on a date that is yet to be determined."

I mean does that actually help anyone? Or do you honestly think FFG withheld this information until now just because they didn't think it was worth mentioning? Perhaps they should just cancel the whole thing until next year?

Get the deal done sooner or wait til next year, yep.

Words fail me...

And another factor is, it wasn't just dealing with Adepticon. It was also with the 7 other sites AND Celebration. So, yeah, there were quite a few balls they were juggling, and that likely resulted in the announcement being later than normal. Hell, in theory they should've announced it last week when they mentioned they were going to Adepticon, but for whatever reason, they were unable to.

Wait... so because *you* can't attend then no one should be able to?

I don't even...

Get the deal done sooner or wait til next year, yep.

Well you can see it that way, but you could also say that we are the test candidates and next year a broader audience will enjoy a more polished experience.

Great, just when I'm on holiday... oh, well, there's always next year.

Okay, just for you:

There is no special tournament in the US, they are all only in different countries in Europe.

*waves magic pretendwand.

Great, just when I'm on holiday... oh, well, there's always next year.

I'm actually considering wether or not to plan a holiday around one, is the location in Italy known?

Birmingham is not really a city you want to visit as a tourist normally, so that's out.

Cusset in France is basically in the middle of nowhere, maybe as a stop in between.

Copenhagen might be an option, but still, I doubt I could convince my wife. Maybe with a reservation at Noma... hmmm...

Ah, Naples. That could actually work, Take the ferry to Capri, visit the Tiberian ruins, go to Pompey which is on our to-do list.

And another factor is, it wasn't just dealing with Adepticon. It was also with the 7 other sites AND Celebration.

Some people clearly have no clue what setting up something this large actually takes. They are also apparently under the delusion that FFG owes them something... And that FFG has complete control over when they announce things. This is clearly not aimed at Sithborg in case anyone was wondering...

Having an event in Adepticon makes sense it's a big miniature game focused event. It makes as much sense if not more sense than having something at most other cons.

Then they had to get things set up for other locations in other countries which is always a fun time... And deal with Disney to get room for the event at the Star Wars celebration which only takes a few emails to set up.

So yeah if someone who wants to go can't... That's really their problem, but all those who can and will go, don't deserve to have this event canceled because you can't make it.

It would be awesome to attend this tournament but I can't afford it.

But I want to organize a "local system" open style tournament here in the Seattle area. I love the idea of placing your forces out on the table and deciding the squad after examaning your opponent's squads. My LGS did no-mirror-match tournament once (worked out a little different, but same idea).

I plan on buying pizza and drinks as well as helping with prize support. Hopefully it will be a FREE event with no entry fee.

I'll start a new thread in the Organized Play sub-thread here on the FFG forums and Reddit XwingTMG. On Facebook and Twitter, I will post details as "xwingsandthings".
