Announcing X-Wing System Open!

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Registered. See you in London

I was like ... gasp! Then I read more and I was like ... I must! Then I saw Europe and I was like ... depressed. This is a neat idea, and if it goes well in the EU, hopefully we could see something like it here in the states next year. It has been mean to have to force international players to travel to MN for 3 years, when we all know the center of the universe is now officially Charlotte =)

Yep. It's called Worlds.

Do you not see the large differences in the events?

Could the short US notice be a purposeful means if keeping attendance manageable?

Well the US event says around 200+ spaces, whereas the UK one is 500+. So maybe.

It's more likely due to trying to find a suitable venue. Adepticon was pretty much set up and ready to go, so you didn't need too much.

What? Australia doesn't play X-Wing? Typical.

I'll be running the Dagobah version in my home town... well it already is a bit of a swamp...

Hehe, and you were all complaing about the lack of Xwing news!

Nope,I'm complaining about all of the complaining complainers are complaining about something that they have no control over that their complaints will have no effect on.

Anyone else just getting loads of code and stuff to do with Cloudflare when they click more info?

Btw I see people talking about 3 days events but the qualifying events are on the 30th of April and 1st of March. That's only two days. What am I missing?

The US event is (the only one that is) 3 days. March 31 through April 2.

There are two days of qualifiers (you play in one or the other) and the top players from both of those days play against each other in the third day, which is the finals. It's set up like the North American Championship at GenCon.

Not really, but then I've never been able to attend Worlds either because it's been in MN. ;)

The U.K. Nationals is normally that weekend at the uk games expo. Is this replacing nationals and invitations to worlds for European players?

Doubt it, there are way more than eight countries in Europe.

Hey, what do you know, another huge Nationals/Continentals/World's tournament in the U.S. held in the great lakes region. . That makes it 4 for 4 this year.

EDIT: Would be nice to have at least adepticon level love for Dragoncon in the southeast and events in california or something. Obvioulsy world's is going to be where it's going to be, and Gen Con is what it is, but spread the love with these other events.

I'm a bit bummed that they chose Stuttgart over Dusseldorf. That would've been easier to get to.

Though Amsterdam would've been much better, or Eindhoven to include Belgium and northern France as well.

What is it with the midwest?! Why nothing in the major cities on the east, west, or south?

I think it has to do with quite as many gaming conventions in the other parts of the country. Maybe if Gencon SoCal still existed...

Why nothing in the major cities on the east, west, or south?

Honestly, does anyone think that FFG is picking the midwest to have these events at, simply because they don't like other parts of the country or something?

Does it not occur to people that maybe, just maybe, they're having them where they are because the logistics don't work somewhere else?

Edit: I mean I get people wishing they had them somewhere else and even making a comment about it... But it seems like some people honestly think they're doing this to spite the rest of the US and Canada or something.

According to a post on the UK X-Wing Facebook group the National will be in August/September and UK Games Expo is looking at combining the Regional with this event but I don't think it's been quite ironed out yet.

Edit: The discussion comes from the UKGE Facebook so I think it's fairly official... https://www.facebook.com/UKGamesExpo

First, AdeptiCon is obviously extremely excited to be part of the Fantasy Flight X-Wing System Open Series. This is an unprecedented opportunity to join what will surely be a historic world-wide event.

If you have any questions about registration in the US, please email us at [email protected] or visit the registration site at http://cart.adepticon.org.

Second, I think everyone involved would have, ideally, liked to have had more notice. The team at FFG has worked extremely hard and have done an amazing job to put this event together. These types of projects invariably take time to organize properly. If this one is successful, hopefully we will see more. It appears there might be a few more ‘Star Wars’ movies in the works. ;) We are strongly committed to making it the best possible event it can be. ‘Star Wars’ is global brand, and there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to get everything in order prior to its public unveiling.

As for locations, keep in mind that conventions typically sign contracts years in advance, and most do not normally have large chunks of extraneous space open for use. In fact, we normally have the opposite - desperately trying to squeeze more into the limited space available. Fortunately, we had recently changed venues and are now in an amazing 160,000 square foot facility. When we were presented with this amazing opportunity, we had the flexibility to work with FFG to make it possible.

So I hope those that are able join us for a fantastic slate of events!

Why is two months notice too short though?

Ah, so it's at Adepticon. I guess that makes sense, they did mention in one of the earlier OP articles they were going to have a presence there this year. For those who don't know Adepticon is basically the event for miniatures wargaming, a much more specialized GenCon if you will. While it hosts major traditional tournaments for the likes of Warhammer 40k, Warmachine/Hordes, Infinity, etc., they also have a ton of narrative/campaign style events for said games as well as panels and stuff on all of the hobbying aspects of tabletop wargaming. It's already been on the list of things I'd like to go to for a while now, for narrative play for 40k(the only format the game really works in), but now I've got that much more incentive to do it next year if the System Open becomes a thing there going forward. Too many Cons to juggle....

Why is two months notice too short though?

For one, I imagine that if you were to try to book hotel space at this point you'd be disappointed at your selection, the Adepticon 2016 hotel block opened last May. You don't really plan to attend an event like this on a whim, and for most people 2 months is definitely on a whim.

It's got to be better to have one two months away than not at all, right?

It's 200+ for Day 1 and 200+ for Day 2, so it's pretty close to the UK one.

I'm not saying they don't like the rest of the country, just pointing out that if they are trying to take the next step in competitive organized play, they need to branch out a bit. Since they already have so many events near them, this would've been an excellent opportunity to have a large event in Atlanta, or Vegas, or Dallas, etc. I'm sure someone will say "well maybe they will in the future", and that may be true, but my point is this was a golden opportunity since this is a whole new concept to of an event to begin with.
