Newbie List Help

By nfcr2224, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys,

Relatively new player to the game and entering first tourney next week. I was wondering what list would be optimal given the limited ships I have.

What I own:

1x TFA Core Set

1x TIE/FO

1x TIE Advanced (I do own both the title and ATC)

1x TIE Defender

1x TIE Phantom

Also have 2x Stealth Devices.

As you can probably tell I'm flying Imps. I'm thinking of a list that most likely has Vader in it but I'm not sure where to go from there. Any help is much appreciated

The Empire is strong but difficult to master. The lists you can build based upon what you have have worked well for experienced pilots but to a newer player it will likely get smacked around while you're still learning.

Omega Leader (21)

Vader (30)

- TIE X/1

- ATC

Whisper (36)

- Advanced Cloaking device

Which gives you 13 points to play around with for upgrades or an Academy TIE if you have access to a standard TIE fighter.

I'd recommend borrowing a Veteran Instincts for Whisper and an Engine upgrade for Vader. Or you can buy a Millenium Falcon which has both of those cards. Getting those cards will drop you down to 8 points which then you can take Predator on Vader and Tactician on Whisper will take 5 more points which will give you a 3 point initiative bid.

I would play

Vader

Tie X1

Advanced Targeting Computer

Colonel Vessery

Epsilon Ace

Zeta Ace

It's exactly 100 points and three of your ships are basically naked but Vader's ATC has some synergy with Vessery's ability. Maybe consider dropping one of the Ties for a pair of predator upgrades and an HLC. If you can get the cards.

I would vote for the tweeked version of this with VI and the other upgrades if you're confidant with the Phantom, in my experience players from your local store are helpful and let you borrow what you need for competition lists (I only had 4 TIE Fighters and was running a 7-TIE Swarm last Regionals so I borrowed more and returned them when we were done). I would highly recommend practicing with the list to get flying the Phantom down pat before the event.

Update to my original post: I now own more expansions including Imp Aces and a Starviper, so i decided to work with this build for now

Darth Vader (29)

TIE/X1 + ATC (1)

Soontir Fel (27)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

PTL (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Stealth Device (2)

Carnor Jax (26)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

PTL (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Stealth Device (3)

Total: 99 points

I'm looking for advice on how to fly Carnor as majority of the time he gets targeted from Turn 1, any slight tweaks or modifications to this build would also be appreciated

I like the build. Carnor's ability is really annoying so it makes sense that he gets targeted first, even over Soontir and Vader. Anything you put on the table that restricts what the other players are allowed to do (Ion, Stress, Autoblaster) are going to get shot at first but that's fine because every die they waste shooting at Carnor is a die they didn't spend on Soontir. Try to use the abilities of your ties to keep them shooting at different ships each turn. With both BR and Boost you can get out of a lot of arcs and really do some damage.

Remember to stay out of arc if you can. Even if it means you don't get a shot. Interceptors are a bit squishy so it's often not worth it to take return fire.

Finally, don't get discouraged if you end up losing alot initially. Practice is the only way to get good with an interceptor.

Mcgoo is right, Interceptors take a lot of practice to fly well. They can be deadly. I've never been that good with them, which is why I fly X-Wings. But of all the ships in the game Interceptors and Phantoms give me the most trouble when flown well. Hat's off to you for trying.

This looks like a great list, I wish you all the best of luck with flying it. No point in me stating the obvious of trying to keep Carnor at range 1 (I guess I just did). As the others have said, practice the build to get the hang of how to fly the interceptors to their potential.

I recently joined a local league in my area and I decided to take the following squad to my first game

Soontir Fel (27)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

PTL (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Stealth Device (3)

Darth Vader (29)

Title + ATC (1)

Outmaneuver(3)

Engine Upgrade(4)

Omega Leader (21)

Push the Limit (3)

Comm Relay (3)

Total: 99 points

Any thoughts/suggestions for improvement would be appreciated

The list itself is fine. I prefer a few different upgrades, but that's more a matter of personal preference than effectiveness.

Its not an easy list to fly though. You have to be very good at correctly anticipating your opponent's moves in order to be successful. Good luck (and practice, practice!)

Well, the Tie /fo blister pack is great because it lets you fly the optimal Omega Leader all in one clean package, with Juke and Comm Relay. What a great deal for any Imperial Player. You should definitely work that guy in to many lists.

Much as I hate to tell you what to "buy" in a "what can I fly with what I have?" thread, you might look into picking up a Falcon.

What's that? I'm a "TRAITOR!" ? No, no. Don't actually fly that piece of Rebel junk, but it does come with VI and 2x Engine Upgrades, and Vader really, really wants those two upgrades. Then whatever list you have will include optimal Vader along with optimal Omega Leader, and whatever else you experiment with is just gravy.

Oh, kept reading in this thread. Access to a spiffy Soontir is great news. Also, your list above includes an Engine Upgrade? If it's yours and you're flying Imperial, skip the Falcon and go for the Firespray, which will include the copy of VI that you need. 35pt Vader, 35pt Soontir, and 29pt Omega Leader (standard Omega Leader w/ Stealth Device) is a good list to practice with.
