Mynock's re-naming the F/O pilots

By Brockart, in X-Wing

Red Ace - Snap Wexley

Blue Ace - Nien Numb

;)

I hear ya, but the Mynocks are worried that FFG will release those pilots explicitly in future packs. There was no reason not to have named them in the t-70 expansion, where they named Ello Asty, for example. No reason to at the same time not name red ace as wexley, nunb or pava.

The reason was that Lucasfilm or Star Wars or whoever controls the information didn't actually give them (permission to release) the information in time for the set to be published. They had Ello and Poe because their names were released well in advanced of the movie. Snap, Jess and Nien were only known about after it came out which was after the T70 pack shipped in some areas, let alone after it went into production.

E: also, both Snap and Jess are canonically Blue squadron. I don;t think we know what Nien is, but Red Ace would fit nicely, given that the most common loadout is R2D2 and Comm Relay and therefore Red Ace loves green moves which Nien crew gives.

My name for Epsilon Leader is Rocky. With blonde hair and a tan, he's good for relieving some tension :P

I'd still say the safe move is to make no assumptions with the named pilots we know of and have not been used by FFG. It would be embarrassing if we were calling Blue Ace Jess Pava for a year, and then FFG releases Jess Pava in a new pack. If Blue Ace is actually Jess Pava, is there any chance FFG is going to come out and say so? I don't really think so.

Either way it's not the end of the world, but assigning the names we have to the 'Ace' pilots is a little risky.

Edit: Also, I think "Whiplash" for Blue Ace is too dope of a callsign to pass up!

The Great Epsilon Ace Debate!!!

Just to throw one more name in the ring I suggest:

Icarus - Who in Mythology Dared to fly too close to the sun on wings of feathers and wax despite warning from his father.

Like Epsilon Ace... who can fly higher than anyone (PS12) but at his own risk, as 1 damage sends him plunging back to reality (PS4)

just say it with me.... ICARUS.... ICARUS.... ICARUS!!!! rah!

Otherwise Sideslip, Zen, Lockdown, High Roller, and Jackpot (Omega Ace) get my votes!

Icarus is good. I like Icarus. I

What about "ruse" for epsilon ace?

Thumbs up to Sideslip.

Thumbs up to Icarus.

Thumbs up to Jackpot (although I still prefer my "Sanction")

But Zeta Leader ... come on. High Roller is just barely memorable.

So many of these just naturally work with in-game banter...

Omega Leader:

When choosing to TL, "I'm gonna Lockdown you." (And later, "I'm gonna Juke that evade... Vader down!!")

Zeta Ace:

When choosing to BR with the 2-template, "I'm gonna Sideslip."

Omega Ace:

When cashing in TL+F for crits, "I'm gonna Jackpot you." (Or for me, "I'm gonna Omega Sanction you.")

Episilon Leader:

When removing stresses, "I'm gonna Zen everybody."

Epsilon Ace:

When taking that first damage, "Icarus falls!"

Zeta Leader:

When choosing to self-stress and gain the extra attack dice, "I'm gonna self-stress and get that extra attack dice."

Hurm. One of these is not like the others.

Zeta Leader can be Dexter, like the TV show.... always very unassuming, but he's constantly stressed and attacks people (spoilers?)

Zeta Leader: Overclock

Zeta Leader: Killshot

Omega Ace: Skillshot

I like the story behind Icarus for Epsilon Ace, but that's a Greek Myth. I'm pretty sure that name would not exist in a galaxy far far away.

What about Devastator?

As a 12 he's devastating to the opponent. But once he's hit, it's pretty devastating to your squad.

How about Alpha Omega for Epsilon ace.... seems confusing, but he's the same cost as an Omega, but he's obviously the Alpha (until he gets hit)

I find it ironic that you are drawing this line of fantasy credibility while discussing fighter squadrons named after the Greek alphabet.

Ahh! Touché.

Man that makes Icarus even better, next time I see one on the table I'm going to call it that.

I feel like you can make all the F/o's Greek Deities.

OL = Chronos

ZL = Artemis

OA = Zeus

EL = Persephone

ZA = Hermes

EA = Hades

they all follow some stream of logic... Chronos ruled over them all, zeus eventually kills chronos (spoilers?) with crits like "spit out my siblings you f@#$ing monster" and "Blinded Titan". Artemis is an archer sister to Hermes, (both Zetas), Extra dice/quick long Barrel Roll... Persephone (forced) wife of Hades brings spring and bountiful harvest destressing all the people, and Hades once a god of Olympus (before damage) becomes the ruler of the damned and maddens himself to the point of evil (once he takes damage)

I think the key to good names is that when you say them, even people who don't know the community generated call-sign should immediately understand the relationship. It's like a joke, if you have to explain it, it's bad. Obviously, not 100% of players will ever have the same reaction to a name, but you try to do as best you can.

Zeta Leader: FREAKOUT!

He sees the enemy.... FREAKS OUT! (takes stress) and WHAMMY.... slips an extra shot in there! (+1 Atk Die) ha

Zeta Leader:

"Zeta Leader FREAKS OUT, range one 4v2 on Poe"

So right. Why Lockdown and Sideslip are fantastic. Even Starslinger or Crittter have grown on me for this reason. Icarus, while a good story, not as much. Though I didn't have any great ideas for him either, so it's better than what I could do.

Epsilon Ace really does need something vaguely insulting.

Fadeout, Fadeaway, Fader, etc. might work
