Random Squads-A New GamePlay Idea?

By jbmindtrick, in X-Wing

Has anyone ever played with a random squad? In essence drop the ships (not the actual ships) but the ship tokens or pilot cards in and randomize them for a faction and then pick 2/3 ships and make a squad from that adding whatever additional cards or an additional ship if necessary to hit the 60/100 points and then play from there. The idea being that in battle you sometimes have to work with what's available and make it work. Was maybe thinking of something new to try out as a new gameplay option.

Whatya think?

That site will generate a random squad for you. You put what you own in and it makes up lists based on what you have.

I've never done it, but it could be fun for casual play.

That's pretty cool and like perfect. Wonder how something like this plays.

Haha I just did a random squad and I was given Nera Dantels with the B-Wing/E2 Mod and no Crew card. So that's hilariously awesome.

Wonder how something like this plays.

Depends on the list. :) Here's 3 lists I got...

Green Squadron Pilot - Daredevil - Advanced Homming Missiles - Hull Upgrade - A-Wing Test Pilot (28)

Tarn Mison - R5 Astromech - Integrated Astromech (24)

'Blue Ace'' - R7 Astromech (29)

Airen Cracken (19)

That one isn't' too bad... not optional by any means but you could win with it.

''Zeta Leader'' - Squad Leader (22)

Omicron Group Pilot - Fire-Control System - Shield Upgrade (27)

'Redline'' - Ion Bombs - Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (30)

Saber Squadron Pilot (21)

Again not too bad. Better than the Rebel list I think. Nothing I'd take to a league night let alone a Store Championship. But it's not too bad for random.

Laetin A'shera (18)

Mandalorian Mercenary - Marksmanship - Ion Pulse Missiles - Ion Bombs - Heavy Laser Cannon - Intelligence Agent - Andrasta (51)

Hired Gun - Flechette Torpedoes - Proton Torpedoes - Autoblaster Turret - R4-B11 - BTL-A4 Y-wing (31)

But then you get something like Dutch Vander with torpedos and the BTL-A4 title, but no turret.

That site is perfect, exactly what I've needed! Lets me try out combinations I wouldn't have thought of or cards I haven't looked to closely at, so if I fly these groups on a regular basis, it'll probably teach me a lot. :)

Only downside is that it keeps wanting to put Royal Guard on all my Interceptors, without taking advantage of it. Oh well, c'est la brie.

Nera Dantels

FCS, Fletchette cannon, extra munitions, integrated astromech

LOL!

Did you really get Nera Dantels with Integrated Astromech ?

Should not be possible...

Sorry fab. That wasn't done on yours. It was done on xwingbuilder.co.uk

Ok, thanks for clarification.;-)

What if you got a 100 point squad random squad, but then got 12 free points to add to it?

You can't remove/replace any upgrades that the randomizer gave you.

See, in that instance, when you get Nera with B/E and no crew, you can rectify it.

You can set the squad limit to lower points, so that's easy enough. Set it for say, 90 points, and while you can't change any cards it gave you, you can add anything up to the point total.

That's how I taught myself the game. Random pick two or three pilots per side then load them to the gills without regard to point limits.

The way i'd do it is a bit different.

First: assign a points limit to pilots. All pilots should be within 2 points of this limit. Then build the pilots with whatever upgrades etc(keep in mind of the aforementioned cost). C. Shuffle cards, draw however many for the match (so if 30 points, say 4).

This way avoids pilot cards with worthless combos. HWKs or Y-wings without turrets for example.

A more complex setup can be made with 3 tiers of pilot card, the 15 pointers 25 pointers, 35 and 50 or something.

Some friends and I ran a friendly tournament among ourselves a couple of months ago with the following rules:

Each player wrote 5 lists.

No list could duplicate a named pilot from a previous list.

No list could feature a ship totaling more than 50pts.

At least one list must belong to a different faction.

Each list was randomly assigned a number from 1-5.

It was very much a fly casual tournament so we avoided bringing anything that could be called an ultra-competitive tournament standard list (or netlist if you prefer).

At the beginning of the day we randomly assigned matchups and lists, and then played swiss ranking but with a new randomly assigned list for each game.

It was an excellent day.

We all got to play with stuff that we'd never usually bring to the table, but with lists that still "worked" in that there weren't any useless upgrades or pointless combos that you can get with properly random list generators.

I habitually run imperials if I'm playing competitively, but this time I brought a rebel list (3Xs and a HWK) and a scum list (Boba a Y and 2 Zs) along with a TIE swarm, a Vessery list and a Vader & Maarek list.

I really recommend the format for a friendly day of gaming. You learn a lot about your own flying style and about how to fly unfamiliar lists against other non-standard tournament builds.

I've done some casual games with random lists. It's pretty fun. It's a great way to play the game if it's getting stale. It's also a good way to rediscover some ships you haven't used in a while.

We played several games with random squads already, great fun, great way to learn new (old) ships and how different ships interacts with each other. Would recommend random squads for every player now and then...

Hi,

One features perhaps you didn't notice is the "COMPLETE" button.

If you want to play with a specific pilot and specific cards assigned to him, you can start the build manually to create this base and by clicking onn the "COMPLETE" button the tool is processing to complete the squadron.

In addition, for those who wants to be completly free, near the "MANUAL" button you have a checkbox called "FREE", by checking it you free everything and you can buil without limit.

I've been looking at Fab's builder for Armada and wanting to play some random fleets from that. The X-Wing side could be pretty fantastic too.

As always, great work Fab. Much appreciated.

What about a 100 pt. game with one ship from each faction? You could use one large ship if you wanted, but you have to have at least one ship from each faction. That would make for interesting casual matches.

It's games like this that make me want to do a podcast on non-tournament X-wing.

I still think my version is the simplest. add 12 points as wanted.

P.S. I love the Expansion Packs Pilot List. I just wish it was more printer friendly.
