Maps

By darthdoug, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

So, I am thinking about purchasing Campaign Cartographer 3 to generate maps for my adventures. My only hesitation is that it looks like more of a fantasy creator and not so much for sci-fi. Have any of you used it for Star Wars roleplaying? Is it worth the money? I do not run D&D or other systems. Any help would be great.

There are scifi elements available for it. The reason they show off the fantasy elements so much is because D&D is the 800 pound gorilla

CC3 has a huge learning curve. It's less a graphics package and more of a CAD package. I found it useful for creating small settlements, where I just wanted to show basic roads, terrain, and buildings...it has a great building template "stamp" for making buildings of various layouts quickly. The other part I liked was the fractal terrain generator, that can create whole planets, generating all kinds of meteorological data, and even produce a spinning globe in animated GIF form. However, I got bogged down in both the larger area maps and the floor plan module...too much wood and stone, very "fantasy".

For floor plans I moved to "iDraw" (for the Mac), which was bought by Autodesk and became "Graphic". It's a vector-based drawing app, has a great grid/coordinate system, handles layers, etc. It's like a Photoshop Lite. I found it easier to learn than CC3 for those kinds of tasks.

i found some graphic tools on internet; not really sophisticated but simple enough and with mixed fantasy/scifi tiles that easily fitted into a Numenera long adventure

however, they are not nearly close to CC tools

i used an old CC3 some times ago, to create maps for fantasy game. Nice and cool, but a pain in the arse to use, even after a couple of tutorial and a video tutorial.

Most important is the tile collection for interior: ie, bed, table, furniture, and doors. And i was using only fantasy items so not really a problem.

In the old days i made a couple of village and some tombs and dungeon for an old DnD campaign, used for Fading Suns too.

However, CC is running only on windows, afaik
