Wishing for an Armada IOS/PC game

By strikenowhere, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey guys,

Armada is basically the holy grail in terms of spaceship combat that I had been wishing for ever since I was a kid. However, as a dad with two children and a full-time job, finding people and/or time for a game is pretty difficult. I know there is something called Vassal to play online against others with, but how awesome would it be if there were an actual IOS/PC game that mirrored how the board game played but against an AI? In addition, there could be an actual campaign set up for both sides to play through (I was thinking something along the lines of Wing Commander's branching storyline missions from way back). Anyone else thought about this at all?

Not really. AI can't be made clever enough for it to be any fun.

Unfortunately, FFG does not have a license to make Star Wars computer games.

Ai seems to be out of the question. But if you want it to be more 3d than vassal, then you could check out tabletop simulator. There's a mod for sw armada there. While it's not completely finished yet, once it is, it will provide that nice 3d-ness.

As a software engineer by trade, I've played around with this idea (and spent a few weekends toying with it). Bottom line, software dev is hard. A project like this would take a small team 1-2 years of full-time work to complete. As mentioned elsewhere, the biggest difficulty would be setting up the AI (even if you gave it pre-built lists).

Come play on vassal.

I wouldn't mind seeing it, but vassal pretty much gives you all you really need. Maybe someone could give Rans some minions and money so he can add some more polish.

I agree, this needs to exist and it needs to be both on iOS and Android and allow head to head play just like the table top game.

I think it's well within the realm of the possible ... it's the licensing part that's slightly scary.

Can we have an Armada with Friends Armada app that uses Vassal style of play for free with ads so the creator can get some profit.

This will let us play as well please sometimes having games go over the span several days and weeks while playing 10+ games at a time. . .

The part of the OP that speaks to me is the ability to play a similar game that doesn't demand 2-3 hours of uninterrupted time to play. That amount of uninterrupted time is rare to those of us with family demands, and having a game I could set down and play in shorter increments would be great.

I know, I know, unlikely to happen, but one can dream!

How does the Vassel thing work and how long does it take. Seems like a real pain in the .....

From what I gather you email your opponent but how do you know your ships are I the right places on each other's boards and the angles are right?

Out March, here's hoping its good.

My only issue with it is that it takes just as long as a game of Armada. Which is hard to fit in if you have work/family/young kids, etc. Otherwise, it's super-awesome!!! (And so is the price).

So it is a program where you don't use the real ships on your home board....everything is on the computer like a real computer game?

Great game! It is in Steam. I play it when I can't get in a game of Armada. Ships turn properly and it feels like a great game space wise. Land based game play can be a bit bland

Yes. Everything is on the computer - it's the digital version of the boardgame. The ships are there on the board, the cards, the dice - everything.

To communicate with your opponent you either use the built-in chat, or preferably Skype, Teamspeak or equivalent.

While I liked the Clone Wars mod I found it to be a bit underrated balanced.

In normal empire at war, the AI is pretty bad. . .
