Pet peeves

By Crabbok, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Peeve would be a good name for a dog, yes?

Anyhow, ya know what really grinds my gears? Bad drivers!

And when someone replies to a thread and complains about the thread being similar to another thread.... over and over. I mean, dude... Not everyone has read all of the threads you have read. Not everyone visits this forum on a daily (or hourly) basis. Some new players might show up and ask a question that's been asked and answered already - heck even a veteran forum member might do the same.

If you are annoyed by someone asking a question, or wanting to have a discussion, then don't post in the thread. Just move along.

What's your pet peeve?

Yeah I've never understood the whole 'thread police' thing -

"There's already a thread for X..."

"Couldn't this have gone in the other thread..."

etc etc.

Who does it really bother?

It takes a special kind of person to bother to log onto a forum and write out a post, complaining about the amount of threads or questions people are talking about.

And yes I see the irony there.

And on the subject of bad drivers - George Carlin summed it up:

"Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot and anybody driving faster than you is a maniac?"

I agree to a degree crabbock

Personally i dont see the problem in helping out new players and repeating previous info

when people go 'seach the forum' in response to everything you actually just get a stagnant forum with no new posts.

But... i do wish people would use off topic for stuff that is off topic. A lot of 'duplicate' threads about say 'snow' or 'the force awakens spoilers' would not have happened if people actually bothered to check in here or were even aware of it.

but yeah totally with you in that there is no harm in discussing old ground... for a start your own viewpoint may have changed since last time it was brought up

Oh I wish they would too. I don't like seeing 3+ threads created within an hour of each other, all about the same thing. The Force Awakens discussion threads were the pinnacle of that gripe. However, I won't go into every thread about TFA and make a post, slamming the OP for making a thread. It fosters a community of negativity.

My biggest pet peeve is people posting on the rules form with 'read the rule book'. The whole point of the rules form is to ask questions about the rules. Telling someone to reread the rules is not helpful.

Pointing out where it covers that in the rules however is quite useful.

As far as reposting old stuff... I think I'd rather see a new thread started for a given subject then see a 3+ month old one resurrected.

You get it a lot in re-enactment forums.

People saying 'read some books' or 'do your own research'

To me thats a bit rude, i always direct people to good web sites or reccoment some accessible books on the subject and *briefly* answer any questions.

Because while i like trying to be helpful i'm not typing out a books entire chapter out for someone because they have a passing interest in the subject.

Teach a man to fish...

Most people who ask questions on the rules forms have in fact read the rules but for whatever reason don't fully understand it or just want to double check their understanding.

In those cases telling them to RTFM doesn't help in the least. Also the whole point of that form is to discuss and ask questions about the rules.

I can see the same with re-enactment. Telling someone to 'read a history book' is not helpful, and will most likely turn someone away. But at the same time you don't have time to give them a history lesson. So giving them some pointers where to find the info helps a ton.

I know myself if I wanted to make a 29th ID uniform from Operation Overlord, I'd be a little hard pressed on knowing where to even start. Although in my case I was actually a member of the 29th ID back in the mid 90's so... Which is why my FoW infantry company is done up as the 29th ID. :)

Also lately people have been posting topics related to the lull in new product news, with regards to xwing, armada, and IA. It never fails, people tend to chime in and basically tell you that you somehow are not entitled to anxiously anticipate new content, or something. The whole "once a year release is fine" crowd seems to attack anyone who even starts a discussion about new product.

Osprey books are always a really good 'first port of call' for a new historical item.

I did the same... i was a Staffordshire Regiment infanteer in the 90s. When i got into re-enactment i decided to do what my company had done in WWII.

Turned out it was glider airborne. Long learning curve, read a lot of books, bought a lot of kit, bought a lot of wrong kit, read some more books bought the right kit..

Now i try and stop people hitting the 'wrong kit' phase.

(i have a US infantry impression too if you ever want a hand, in fact we did a river crossing in a Higgins boat last year, i don't think anyones crossed any water in europe in one of those for decades! :)

Use your blinkers people! Your car doesn't retain appreciable value by not using them... and I'm less likely to run over you when you don't know how to handle a 4-way stop sign...

Oh, and the other one, since you broached the driving subject, the turn lane is meant for people to turn into a location, not for you to attain speed and "turn in" to traffic.

For forums, yeah, I don't have too much, I just feel sad for a lot of people that really get worked up and bent out of shape over a few words typed by strangers. We have... thankfully... different opinions and values, enjoy the diversity, don't be invested in singularity.

People posting on topic threads in off topic kinda annoys me. Obvious trolls definitely annoy me (but getting better at just ignoring them).

there's already a thread for this, this one has to be closed.

..

:D

one of my (many, many, MANY) pet peeves are manners in everyday life. in the little things. so many situations where I think "your mother has certainly tought you better" or "if someone did to you what your doing right ATM to that other person, you'd be pissed. so why do you do it, a.sshole..?!"

turn signals for example.

takes no effort to use them, creates so many hairy situations when not used.. still, people can't be arsed to use them. Camping at a roundabout and smashing peoples windshields when not blinking is something of a wet-dream for me. joking, of course.. well... a bit. :D

Some of my pet peeves:

  • Quantum physics (no really!)
  • Politics (lookin' at you Trump!)
  • Obvious trolls
  • American Psycho (It's not normal for me to scream: "Just kill them already, Bateman!" at the audiobook, is it?)
  • Windows doing stuff you don't want it to do.
  • rain
  • Lays sweet &sour chips no longer being available
  • Local toy stores stocking almost no transformers stuff.
  • Exessivly negative people ( Yeah I stole that from Calvin & Hobbes!)
  • rain (yes again!)
  • cold pudding
  • people bumping your ancle with a babystroller
  • ...

On the forums, I don't really have any, but what VandorDM described would bug me the most.

People saying "Poisonous" when they mean "Venomous". As my nerdiness for Star Wars is matched only by my nerdiness for reptiles, it pains me when people do this. Poison is bad if you ingest it. Venom is injected into you. My biology lesson is now complete.

being NOT sarcastic: that's an easy to remember way that explains it. good one ;)

but what if I ingest venom?* ;)

* Ok, I guess most venoms need to be introduced into the blood stream to effective.

That depends. The most common venoms are neurotoxic, so unless they get through the epithilium (skin) and introduced to nerves, they are unlikely to cause any sort of reaction. However, there are some (questionable) reports of venom causing skin irritaiton, especially form the bark scorpion, Centruroides sculpturatus .

Okay, this is getting freaky now. We both like Zuckuss and use his avatar and now we discover that we're both really into venomous animals? Too weird. Granted, I'm into arachnids, rather than reptiles. I'm currently writing a paper about the transcriptome of a venom gland from a lesser-known arachnid. It should be submitted by the end of the year and published sometime in 2017.

I will say, though, that in my reading, I've come to the understanding that "poison" and "venom" are like "rectangle" and "square." "Poison" is a broad category that includes "venoms." so if you called a toad venomous (you eat it and get sick) you'd be wrong, but if you said rattlesnakes had poisonous fangs, you wouldn't be incorrect. I don't think there is consensus on this issue, though.

To add to the confusion on venoms, some people are now advocating that the salivary secretions of mosquitoes, kissing bugs, and ticks also be considered venoms. I think that's a bit of a stretch, but perhaps with more data on the salivary composition, I could be convinced.

Back on topic, my pet peeve, like many others, is people not using their blinkers. Why wouldn't you? My wife says it's because some people speed up when they see you put your blinker on so they can block you, but really, are there that many jerks in the world? I'd rather give ample warning of my intentions and let the cars around me speed up to give me room or slow down to let me in.

Another big, big one for me is people who throw their cigarette butts out the window when they're driving. Really? You don't have an ash tray you can use in your car? What makes you think that throwing a cigarette butt out your window isn't littering? It drives me crazy! The world is not your ash tray, loser!

[deep breath]

Okay, glad I got that out of my system. Happy Monday.

People who drive into service stations against the traffic because their fuel tank is on the other side of their car.

This reminds me of another one, and fits under the general heading of bad manners, which is to me really a form of egotism and inconsideration. Other people just don't matter enough for you to consider how your actions will affect others.

People who pull up next to the pump but don't actually get gas, instead they run into buy stuff from the store. Because apparently parking in a parking spot is too much work...

What bugs me is people at the ticket desk at the train station at rush hour faffing about trying to find out the fairs for a return to dorset on a tuesday in march , next year... while a queue of people really hoping to get the next train wait patiently behind them.

Ditto people who decide lunch time is the time to go to the post office to argue about their welfare/benefits/pension payments or some other thing they could clearly do at ANY other time because they are not in work

(and i say this as someone who was on disability benefits for two years with a spinal injury... i used to go and sort things like that out at like 10am on a thursday when the post office was quiet... ditto time consuming but non urgent things at the bank... dont do them at the only time slot in the day when people need to be quick)

I was going to comment about heroes that play music through their phone on the train .. Yet, as I type this, one hero is playing his doof doof through a bluetooth speaker. It seems he has out-chuckleheaded the chuckleheads. Umm .. Well done sir .. I guess!?

I'm moving to a quiet carriage now.

Edit: and on arrival there are 2 bogans discussing which Rebecca is a 'goer'.

last summer some kids were playing crap tinny dance music on there phone on a train and annoying people.

I went over and said 'hey is that that really cool new Iphone5s (or whatever)?' and they were like 'yeah'

and i said oh cool so does it use itunes

by this point they had there guard down and were like 'yeah it does'

'does it come with like headphones and everything? 'i asked

Yeah , yeah it does... they replied

'WELL F****** WELL USE THEM THEN YOU SCROTES!'

and to there credit they turned the music off and looked sheepish. :0
