Road to Warboar Game's store championship

By SoontirFel, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Hi All!

New member here on the forums - have just started getting back in the game after a hiatus of nearly a year (a hiatus interspersed with odd games here and there...) so, building the collection back and trying to get as many games in as possible!

FEBRUARY 20TH!!! this is the date of Warboar's Store Championship, my first foray into competitive Xwing and boy am I looking forward to it. I have 4 weekends of practice before this (maybe 2 games a weekend) so I need to get good and get good quick!!

Ill try and update my practice games here (if I can) and will 100% get a report up of the event...

I plan to run the following...

(35) Fel - PTL, AT, RGT and SD

(34) Jax - PTL, AT, RGT and Hull Upgrade

(31) Turr - VI, AT, RGT and SD

Wish me luck!

may the force be with you

Good luck!!

I played almost this exact list at my first tournament back in November. Mine had the same Fel set up but Turr only had VI and AT, Carnor had AT, RGT, SD and Opportunist.

I went 2-3 and had a great time. I love flying Interceptors, they are lots of fun. However they are very unforgiving and one mistake is usually catastrophic.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Jaysolaris - I'm sure I will enjoy it! any sagely words of advice?

The main lesson I learnt was that I should have been a bit less aggressive at certain points of the games. If I saw an opportunity for a kill shot I took it without taking into account that by doing so I would leave myself open. By playing a bit more conservatively I may well have done a bit better than I did.

Use your boost and barrel roll to reposition, stay out of arcs where possible, use evades when it's not possible. Take the kill shot when there is no chance of reprisal and you'll do okay.

First couple of games in my return to Xwing then and thoroughly enjoyed it (even though I lost 2 games out of 2)

So, I flew...

TIE Interceptor: · Soontir Fel (27)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Interceptor: · Carnor Jax (26)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

TIE Interceptor: · Turr Phennir (25)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

First game vs..

Ps5 phantom

Sensor jammer, stygium particle accelerator and mara

Vader

Tie/x1, TIE Mkii and VI

Delta Squadron

Mangled cannon

He deployed delta alone in centre with phantom and vader flying side by side up his right flank. I flew all 3 spread with Turr out on my right flank. Got a good first and second turn with all my ships converging on the defender and taking him down. Fel took heat next and dropped in T3 followed swiftly by Tur... Then several turns followed with jax housing around with the remaining ships - I got the phantom down to 1 hull left before vader caught up with me and ended the game.

Second game, against Bengle Soleslapper

Red ace

R2d2, At and comms relay

Poe

R5p9, AT and VI

Gold Squadron Y

Ion turret, btl a4 and r3a2

Good fun game, he deployed Y and Poe on his left with red ace on centre right. I deployed jax and Fel on my left with Turr centre left. Nice staggered first turn moves brought all my ships in to red ace and following that in to Poe. Poe went down to concentrated fire over a couple of turns but left me with lots of stress from the Y. Some dubious action choices on my part lead to the list falling apart and Bengle played well to come in to a win.

So, points to work on for me...

Don't get over excited on boosts and barrel rolls - take them only when I need to...

Learn my card rules better

Get better and estimating where my ships will go on a maneuver

Great fun though, loved triple Ints and looking forward to next week!

After a lot of reflection on last week's ganes I've decided to change the list up slightly for this weekends games...

TIE Interceptor: · Soontir Fel (27)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Interceptor: · Carnor Jax (26)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Fighter: · "Mauler Mithel" (17)

Veteran Instincts (1)

TIE Fighter: Academy Pilot (12)

Still has 2 ps9s and a ps8 but now includes a ps1 blocker to run interference... Reports at the weekend

Good updates!! Keep them coming!

So, another week of practice this time running...

TIE Interceptor: · Soontir Fel (27)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Interceptor: · Carnor Jax (26)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Fighter: · "Mauler Mithel" (17)

Veteran Instincts (1)

TIE Fighter: Academy Pilot (12)

This will be the last practice session before the store championship so I had 3 games...

G1

Poe -Vi, R5p9 and AT

red leader - r2d2, comm relay and AT

Gold sq. - TLT and r2 astromech

Good close game, good positioning got Poe down on first run (academy with the kill - promotion for that man!!) - followed by a lot pf boring maneuvering as Carnor and Mauler went down. Academy followed to leave Fel and red leader flying around an asteroid taking pot shots. Gane ending at time with Fel on 1 hull and red fully regenerated - draw with modified win to opponent...

G2

Brobots with B and D

Both with ig2000, Hlc, AS, inertial dampners and pred.

Another close game, found it difficult though flying against 2 big ships so close and weary of sloops - Fel killed himself on a rock - got both down to 1 and 2 hull before he wore me down enough to wipe the board

G3

More scum action with...

Palob - mouldy crow, recon spec, blaster turret and opportunist

Leechos - crack shot

2 low ps Ys with tlt ad unhinged

Opponent made the killer move of telling me that this would be an easy win for me... It wasn't - opened well woth the ties jousting his block and the ceptors coming in on the flank - Carnor went down to double crit... Fel to the same after wiping Palob out - academy and Mauler jousts for a while but wemas outgunned and out played and they both went down...

So, 3 losses... No wins again but the games were MUCH closer and I enjoyed the extra bodies on the table more than running Turr.. roll on store champs!

Think I'm going to end up running the following...

I think I'm actually going to run... TIE Interceptor: · Soontir Fel (27)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Interceptor: · Carnor Jax (26)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Royal Guard TIE (0)

Stealth Device (3)

TIE Fighter: Black Squadron Pilot (14)

Calculation (1)

TIE Fighter: Black Squadron Pilot (14)

Calculation (1)

Opinions please

Changed my mind again - for the last time though!

Running

Fel - PTL, AT, RGT and SD

Turr - PTL, AT, RGT and SD

Jax - VI and Hull

all with a 2 point bid

Bring on the weekend!

So, the Bromley Warboar store championship is over (for me anyway) and boy what a day (spoiler - I didn't win... :( ). The venue is just excellent with sterling service from all staff and friendly, welcoming locals. Minor problem with the pairings after lunch but this really wasn't a hardship as It gave more chatting time! Early rise to get the train in so we had a cuppa in the cafe next door. With body shaking from caffeine overdose we started the first match...

R1

Against Matt Balding - miranda and 2 ps2 Kwing all with Tactician and TLT. I played really stupid here and my inexperience against this list showed - 15 minutes later the game was over after a string of poor choices on my part and an excellent played game on Matt's. I can't say I 'enjoyed' the game but matt was nice and I can only blame myself.

R2

Brath - pred and hlc

Omega leader - juke, comm relay

Sigma - stygium particle accelerator

This was against Nicholas Yun (what a lovely guy for those that haven't met him - really pleasant and kept 'checking in' with me all day. Good game, really enjoyed it and his FO paintjob looked great in person. Managed a good opening here and drew in on Sigma early to take it out of the game. Game ended with Brath and Turr jousting and, Brath won out. Again, great gane, great opponent.

R3

Against Kieran

Krassis - hlc, Tactician

Zeta leader - pred, comm relay, SD

Omega leader - juke, comm relay

Another good opponent - forgot most of gane but ended with Fel chasing Krassis - last shot after time had been called let a 1 hull remaining Fel take the win but knocking Krassis out.

R4

Against Phil

Standard Fel and Jax with the same

Standard omega leader

Wow! This game! Very sensible formation flown opening that descended into carpark chaos turn 2. Phil is obviously well practiced with his list however and he pull through for a convincing win!

R5

Kath - hlc, ruthlessness, Gunner, engine upgrade

Echo - mara, ad sensors, ptl, advance cloaking device.

Another lovely opponent with a beautifully painted fleet - especially his Kath. This was probably my 'best' game - chases echo down on his left flank and surrounded and dogged Kath until she was gone. Good win with only the loss of Jax.

R6

Whisper - advanced cloaking device, Tactician, Vi

Krassis - hlc, engine upgrade

Academy

Honestly, my heart wasn't in this game- I was tired and a bit overwhelmed with the days gaming. I made stupid moves and my opponent (who's name I've forgotten, sorry!) played well. I got half points on his firespray - he wiped me out.

So there - I placed 43rd.. I Wanted to WIN 1 GAME and NOT COME LAST. Both of which I achieved. Really enjoyed my first competition - roll on the next!

Hi dude, I was your round 5 opponent with the repainted Kath and Echo. Cheers for the great game - notice you didn't mention that Carnor only died because he k-turned onto a rock :) otherwise you could have easily got the 100-0.

The tournament was 58 people so 43rd means you weren't in the bottom quater - pretty good based on the number of hardcore players that had turned up.

Lots of the people at that tournament (all the guys in the 186 t-shirts) play regularly at Dark Sphere in London. Your R1, R6 opponents and me all regularly play at the Eagle Gaming Club in Wandsworth. If you're in the area you'd be more than welcome to come roll some dice with us. Otherwise, hope to see you again at the next tournament!

I am pretty sure your opponent in this game with Mitchell. I played against this list too. :)
