501st Training vs Targeting Computer/Rule by Fear

By ThatJakeGuy, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey guys! I'd like some input on my Troopers list:

The 501st:

Elite Snowtroopers

2x Elite Stormtroopers

Heavy Stormtroopers

2x Officer

2 points of upgrade

Command Cards:

2x Reinforcements (duh)

Grenadier

Inspiring Speech

New Orders

Negation

Reposition

Field Tactician

Element of Surprise

Take Initiative

Planning

Urgency

Fleet Footed

Against The Odds

Hard to Hit

So I need to figure out which upgrade to use. TC plus RbF gives me earlier access to Reinforcements and more consistent rolls and better range from my Heavies. On the other hand, 501st Training gives my Heavies much better mobility as well access to Focus in the first exchange (use the ->->: to get a Focus and get some movement done with the Officers).

What would you take? C&C also welcome on my Command Deck.

I would drop the Heavy Stormtroppers ... ;)

The Officers give 2 movement points each. The Heavies are very slow anyways, with "use the ->->: to get a Focus and get some movement done with the Officers" they lose one round for a Focus. Do you really think that's worth it? Especially, if you add in, that you need an activation from the Officers to do that.

6 Heavys

2 501st

2 Officer

2 Officer

=> 12 points for 2 focused attacks on turn three (or turn two, if you are lucky).

You're right, the focus is a corner case. However, in the current rotation it is already very unlikely to have first turn engagements as all three maps are on the larger side, so in my experience there is limited if any fire on the first round anyway. Honestly, after the nerve I would rather have an upgrade then a third officer. After the second round, my Officers tend to just camp terminals anyway as my Troopers are already well into the fray.

Personally I think RbF and TC. TC because heavies' dice suck. and RbF to hopefully get to that stupid reinforcements card as quickly as possible.

Elite Stormtrooper vs. Regular Heavy Stormtrooper

Elite Stormtroopers and Regular Heavy Stormtroopers have the same cost per model / reinforcement cost (3 points per model).

That’s a tie

Since passing is allowed, in my opinion, 3 figures for 9 points are better than 2 figures for 6 points. The opponent has to kill more figures to get the points. The chance for using Reinforcements to full effect is better. Command Cards and Skirmish Upgrade Cards, that effect an entire unit, are more efficient. If you have the initiative on turn two, then a 3 trooper activation is more effective than a 2 trooper activation.

Elite Stormtrooper +1

Both Elite Stormtroopers and Heavy Stormtroopers have the Trooper keyword. Additionally, Heavy Stormtroopers have the Heavy Weapon keyword, which is great.

Heavy Stormtrooper +1

Speed 6 is great. Speed 5 is good. Speed 4 is OK. Speed 3 is for dwarfs.

Heavy Stormtrooper -1

Heavy Stormtroopers have 2 health per point, which is great (on par with Royal Guards). Elite Stormtroopers have 1.666 health per point, which is OK.

Heavy Stormtrooper +1

Heavy Stormtroopers have Composite Plating. Currently, most attacks come from 3 or fewer spaces away. As most missions concentrate on short ranged combat around objectives, I don't think this will change soon. Therefore, this ability has almost no effect at all.

Heavy Stormtrooper +0

Both Squad Training and Last Stand are great.

Elite Stormtrooper +2

A red die with SURGE: 1 Damage deals the same amount of damage as a green die with SURGE: 2 Damage. A blue die with SURGE: 1 Damage deals less damage than a blue die with SURGE: 2 Damage. Not counting the blast, Elite Stormtroopers deal more damage. The red and blue die combination doesn't have that many surge results, so the blast doesn't happen that often. The green die has a little less average Accuracy than the +2 of the Elites.

Elite Stormtrooper +1

=> More figures in the unit, more mobility, more damage, better special rules …

If you include Squad Training, the Elite Stormtroopers deal more damage and are faster, the Heavy Stormtroopers have more Range and take more damage (and have the Heavy Weapon keyword). I don't really like them ...

I would really like to play a trooper list myself and I like your list.

I don't like Kayn, so let's forget about him. I like Elite Stormtroopers, Elite Snowtroopers, Elite Probe Droids and both Officers. I want to have at least 7 activations. I just can't come up with a list that's 40 points. This is so frustrating.

This was not against the 501st card, I would just not use it first turn to focus the heavy troopers. You get more out of this card, if you just use it for movement and you get more movement out of it, if you use it for Elite Stormtroopers or Elite Snowtroopers.

I'm right there with you. Haven't played with Snowtroopers at all yet and I'm a little afraid of inconsistent dice, but I love the idea of chaining focus and having field medics to keep my already durable Troopers around longer. There problem is that combo is already at 28 points so there's not much room for other guys. I like the Heavies because they have the defensive bonus and have a good dice pool against White dice (since it can't roll more than one block the damage from the red can get through pretty well). Not much to do with the rest of the points, though. Maybe when Scout Troopers come out they'll be cool.

What about:

(12) Elite Snowtroopers with 501st - lets you shoot and gain free move to use your healing more often

(18) 2x Elite Stormtroopers

(6) Regular Stormtroopers

(4) 2x Officers

40 points - 6 activations and 14 figures - lots of movement, healing, strong stormtrooper attacks, etc.

So go

2x eStormies (18)

1x eSnowies (10)

3x rOfficers (6)

1x eProbe (5)

and add either RbF or TC (1)

=40

They aren't 7 acts but here's some ideas Ive been testing out.

List1:

2 E Stormtrooper

1 E Snow Trooper

1 Royal Guard

2 Officer

and List 2

2 E Stormtrooper

1 E Snowtrooper

2 E Probe Droid

1 Officer

Im a huge fan of 2 E Storm + 1 E Snow as a core.

You could go :

2x eStormies

2x eProbe

2x reg Offi

1x reg Snow (they are only there for the heal, nothing more, so regs are enough)

1x RBF

This is basically my actual SC List except that I trade reg Snow and RBF for a reg RG.

I'm a big fan of the second list and I think I'll give it a try instead of the first one. Heavies are fun looking but those EProbes are awesomely durable
