Falling into an arc

By XwingMario, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Love this game and have only just coordinated games so here's my question. I had a tie advance player move into my arc and when it came to my part of the round I decided to pass on my maneuver/movement with the A wing. To literally not move and then fire at him in the combat phase as I intended a green maneuver that would have put me outside an arc; his or mine. The question was if it is allowed.

Or do I "HAVE" to move the ship. It was nearly impossible to make an accurate guess as he got so close. The dials don't have a "0" but I read that you can pass on an action and we went with that.

Thanks

You have to move, that is not optional. Taking an action you can skip though.

you have to perform the maneuver you picked on your dial, performing an maneuver and taking an action are two different things, you can skip your action but you Always have to perform your maneuver, there are actually ships that do have a red 0 on their dial (lambda shuttle and YV-666) and the scum have an illicit upgrade inertial dampeners that allow you to perform a white 0 maneuver instead of your revealed maneuver and get a stress, but the rest will don't have the option of not moving (unless they bump)

The important distinction here is Action versus Maneuver. Maneuvers always happen. Actions are the things on your action bar (for your A-Wing, they are Boost, Target Lock, Evade, and Focus), or on Upgrade Cards that say, "Action:"

Yup. A big part of the skill in this game is playing to aim your ships at where you think your opponents are going to be, not where they currently are. It can take a bit of a leap of the brain to get to the state where you're thinking even one move ahead (let alone the vastly more you need to be a top-flight competitive player) but once you get there, it's really satisfying.

I think we ll wouldnt move most the time of the game worked this way, lol

It almost sounds like you are setting your dial when it comes time for your ship to move. If you are, that's not how it works.

- At the start of the activation phase the dials for all ships are set.

- In PS order (lowest to highest) ships reveal their dial and perform the maneuver on it even if it causes them to collide. Ships may not skip their maneuver.

- The ship may or gain or lose a stress token based on the color of the maneuver it just performed.

- After a ship moves it performs its action (unless it bumped, hit an asteroid, or has a stress token). It may choose to not take an action.

- The next ship activates.

- After all ships have activated, ships attack in reverse PS order (highest to lowest). Ships may choose to not attack.

only a few ships have a movement zero on their maneuver dial like the yv666.

Note: The situation described in the original post? That's why Inertial Dampeners are a thing (for Scum: a discardable Illicit Upgrade that lets you take a stress and discard the upgrade to opt not to move).

Something I was going to point out as well.

Beyond that there are a few things that can allow a ship to change its selected maneuver but the thing is that a maneuver still takes place. Now that maneuver could see you getting blocked back to your starting position as a result of overlaps but that is not a voluntary choice to make.

Got it thanks.
