Multiple Evade or Focus Tokens

By jba98177, in X-Wing Rules Questions

There are several ways for a ship to go into combat with more than one focus or evade token. I see in the rules/FAQ where you cannot perform the same Action more than once in a round, but using a token is not the same thing.

1. Can you spend more than one Evade token during a single defense? (Example: Decimator using 2 evades to cancel 2 hits)

2. Can you spend more than one Focus token during a single attack/defense? (Examples: Use 1 Focus to attack with Proton Rockets and then another Focus to change attack dice results or Use 1 Focus to defend against attack by ship with Gunner and then another Focus when he attacks you a second time)

Yes to all of the above.

It's relatively unusual for a ship to end up with multiple evade tokens to spend, and it's rarely useful to spend multiple focus tokens in a single attack, but it's absolutely legal to do so.

1. Yes

2. Yes*

* You don't have to spend a Focus token to make a Proton Rocket attack - you just have to HAVE a Focus token.

Compare and Contrast:

Blaster Turret.

Attack (Focus): Spend 1 focus token to perform this attack against 1 ship (even a ship outside your firing arc). Attack value: 3. Range: 1-2.

Proton Rocket.

Attack [Focus]: Discard this card to perform this attack. You may roll additional attack dice equal to your agility value, to a maximum of 3 additional dice. Attack value: 2. Range: 1.

Do what the card says...... and all that:

A card with the Attack (focus): header requires that you have a focus token. Unless the card says to spend the token, you get to keep it.

Edit: Rocket Ninja'd!

Examples: Use 1 Focus to attack with Proton Rockets and then another Focus to change attack dice results...

Proton Rockets don't require you to spend the Focus token, just to have it. If they wanted you to spend the Focus, it would tell you to at the same time it tells you to discard the card.

Compare the wording on Homing Missiles vs Concussion Missiles for more examples of this.

I much appreciate the answers provided. I can't believe my group has been burning tokens to attack when we didn't have to. Learn something new each time we play...

No problem - you aren't the first person to miss it.

There's a few other missiles that do something similar - have you spotted the difference between Ion Pulse Missiles, and Concussion Missiles ?

IPM

Attack [Target Lock]: Discard this card to perform this attack. If the attack hits, the defender suffers 1 damage and receives 2 ion tokens. Then cancel all dice results. Attack: 3. Range 2-3.

CM

Attack [Target Lock]: Spend your Target Lock and discard this card to perform this attack. You may change 1 of your blank results to a [Hit] result. Attack value: 4. Range: 2-3.

Then check homers and advanced homers

Which is fantastic. :)

Not to mention most ion weapons and ion torpedoes - most only deal 1 damage, but ion torps deal the damage you hit with (plus the ion effect).

so if I focus on my action to get a token but don't spend it, I can keep it and focus next turn and get another? we've been discarding unspent tokens at the end of the round.

No you discard unspent tokens, apart from target locks and when a card says NOT to discard a token (such as the Moldy Crow title for the HWK)

But there are ways to get multiple tokens in a turn and you can spend as many of them as you like.

Ok, so we're playing correctly then. So you can't stack tokens unless you have a card of somesort that tells you that you can. got it. Thanks!

No.

Stacking of tokens is not limited except for blue Target Locks. Any other token you can have as many of as you can take actions to get or be passed by other ships. With the right build(s - a lot of them would require multiple ships contributing) you could potentially get up to six or seven focus in a single turn, especially if you're Soontir getting shot at by stressbots and tacticians.

You don't have to have a card that tells you you can stack them, you have to have cards that allow you some way of taking extras; the stacking is never limited, it's just the available actions that are, either by the one action per turn limit, or by the 'each action only once per turn' limit.

But with the exception of Moldy Crow and Comm Relay, there's no way to retain focus/evade tokens between rounds.

Just to make sure this is right with stacking Focuses. If I have Kyle Katarn as my crew and I clear a stress, I acquire a Focus Token, then for the Preform Action step I choose to Focus, giving me another focus. That is legal?

Kyle Katarn crew: After you remove a stress token from your ship, you may assign a focus token to your ship.

You are not performing a Focus action, just being assigned the token. Therefore, you can still perform a focus action later.
