Book in the mail, help with a few things

By EbongHawk, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hi guys I am going to be GM'ing a group of 4. Two are using EotE which I am familiar with. One is using AoR but we are swapping duty for obligation so effectively he is an Edge character. The last guy... well there is a reason I'm on the Force and Destiny forum. A couple of questions I'm sure you guys get all the time but I don't have a book to refer to and I want to get ahead of the the curve.

1) I assume you just start with a force rating of 1 if you are a FaD character, right? I can only find limited pdf's to aid me in prepping and I just need to confirm that. Found it.

2) I plan to give the FaD Character both a morality and an obligation. Though I won't give the other pc's (save the possibility of a character that moves into a jedi class down the road) a morality I thought it made sense for all of the characters to have an obligation score so they have some form of group score. Am I correct in my understanding that morality is pretty much a necessity for FaD characters for certain powers? Can I skip morality all together without hurting that player's experience?

3) Any complications you guys have run into when mixing the three books that a guy might want to be aware of going into it?

I have run EotE a few times and understand the rules and the system but am a little wary of mixing them as at present I only have access to my EotE book. Thanks for the help guys and gals.

1. Assuming you're using the default starting character rules across all books, yes, they are Force Rating 1. Technically, starting as a career from FD gives you that force rating. FaD does include an advanced character starting option, knight level play, which starts the player off with a lightsaber and a pile of XP, but if I recall, the character is still FR 1. And in theory, you could start the other PCs at the same XP level and 10k credits, and you'd have the same balance (arguably).

2. There is actually a page in the book that covers this exact topic, its like p. 338 or something (don't have book with me, but I remember citing it in a similar email I sent to my GM once). Yes, you absolutely can play it this way, and have both be active. Morality isn't truly "necessary" to play, but is a thematic and useful way to motivate the character. In theory you could skip morality, but I personally would advise against it. Its easy enough to track (technically just that you as the GM give the player conflict for doing things that go against their morality, and their score tracks itself). Arguably, there is a use for morality if the player chooses to go dark side, but I'm a bit hazy on the specific mechanics of it.

3. I'm a player with a FaD character in a game involving PCs from all 3 books. Although really its 3 EotE characters and 1 FaD character (one guy in the first couple sessions was playing smuggler->Pilot, but then asked the GM to go Ace->Pilot and it was permitted), and we haven't had any cross-system specific issues crop up yet (although ask me later tonight, I -just- got my lightsaber last session, and we're playing tonight). GM has opted to not give me an obligation score, mainly because he does choose to ignore the start of session d100 role (he dislikes the mechanic of reducing strain by 1).

Largely the Obligation/Duty/Morality systems are just there to motivate the PCs. I wouldn't worry too much on the exact mechanics of what they do (obviously, yes, do follow the rules on em).

  1. If you take a F&D career, you automatically gain FR 1.
  2. I believe the Protect/Unleash power depends on the morality of a PC.
  3. There shouldn't be any problem, as the games are meant to work together.

Ninja'd.

Ah, true (I think), on point 2, forgot that power.

Doesn't Harm/Heal have a similar limitation?

That said, I clearly recall that the FaD book does cover being able to play without the Morality system in the section on cross system play.

EDIT: Changed my above post too, but should point out I checked my email and its page 338 that talks about cross system play. Honestly this should cover pretty much all of your questions when you get the book OP.

Heal is light side only as well, and (just checked) some of the high-end upgrades for Protect/Unleash explicitly require one to be light or dark side.

And "Cross-Game Line Compatibility" starts on p. 338.

I have this situation with two players, works great with one minor exception: in the Desperate Allies book, the Propagandist has Talents related to Duty (Positive Spin). It's not major because the player can buy around them, but I also gave them the option of turning them into a setback-removal talent for some social skills.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just saw another thread similar in nature but not necessarily the same question pop up over top of mine. Sorry to flood with the "new guy" post topic especially over something I'm sure is always getting asked. I post mostly in the X-wing forums and dig not getting reamed for a post that has been answered a bunch.

Haven't had any issues in my games. Run all 3 books. Every player has a morality which only effects negatively if they are force sensitive. However people get vibes from morality...oh he seems dark etc. Then the group has either duty or obligation. Since they are resistance in Force Awakens they decided on Duty.

I believe the Protect/Unleash power depends on the morality of a PC.

Doesn't this depend on what type of force point you use? Dark side pips give you Unleash, Light side pips give you protect?

Not quite. You can use either kind of pip for both powers. There are some special circumstances, though:

1. If you are a Dark Side user (Morality 29 or less) you cannot use Protect to shield other people, only yourself;

2. Certain control upgrades only add their effects if you do not use dark side pips (for Protect) or DO use dark side pips (for Unleash);

3. The upgrade that lets you use the power quicker, and the Mastery upgrade, require you to be either a Paragon or a Darksider to use, depending on the power.

I stand corrected. Seems a little...weird...to be able to use the Light side of the force to throw lightning, but ok. :D

Using pips isn't necessarily indicative of what side of the Force you're using. It just means it comes from a moment of clarity and mastery, rather than raw emotion. I'm sure even Palpatine just "phones in" the lightning every so often. :)

It's also important to remember that Unleashed doesn't have to be Force Lightning. It could be any burning/crippling effect. The master upgrade calls out Force Lightning, but that's a guideline more than a rule.

I am playing 2 different Force users in 2 different campaigns. Both use bind, but most cases it's less "Force choke" and more telekinetic stasis, or using a piece of the environment to ensnare the target.
