Do we really want assault gunboat?

By churchwarden, in X-Wing

See my above edit, basically it's that. B-wing would be a forgettable ship were it not for the x-wing series (and the toy, which I had in the 80s).

That's a good point but the B-wing had the benefit of being in the movies and many, many EU books as opposed to a PC game series.

I think everybody who played the old TIE Fighter PC game wants both the Gunboat and the Missile Boat.

Yes and No. The Assault Gunboat was an interesting medium assault ship that had a specialized role in the Imperial Navy and required some finesse to fly well. The Missile Boat was 20 missions of stun-locking BS.

If we are going by appearances then you should try to explain the TIE Phantom and Defender. Phantom was in one single (poor) game in the early 90s, and the empire at war expansion slot. Defender was a wee bit more famous. Gunboat has had more appearances too, in the novels (not as much as the ackbarmobile, granted) and even in the recent FFG RPGs.

Also, do you not think there were other, more recent in canon ships than the VT49. It appeared in two videogames. Let's face it, it's aesthetic was the primary reason for it being in game.

All of these arguments of course have been made before, in the previous cycle.

I'mma taking the red ending here.

I'm new(ish) to the forum but I believe now is the time to say:

"Grab some popcorn"

AND a big-ass barrel of soda-beer...

Advancement by welding a bunch together?

If that's what it ACTUALLY was, sure. Pretty sure welding a bunch of Bombers together wouldn't magically give the ship shields, hyperdrive, advanced systems and engines.

If it's in FFG sources already then it is probably just a matter of time. Until it does happen though I imagine these threads will continue to discuss the merit or this ship while each continued release dilutes its place further and further (in my eyes).

A link to a review of "Fly Casual" the expansion for SWRPG which has the alleged ship.

Given the Gunboat is in "Fly Casual" It doesn't take much Dan Browning to conspiracy theory why we'll get a Gunboat soon.

I won't though, but you can see how people could.

I think the Imperial's can carve a nice new niche for themselves in the Meta with double tapping. If the Gunboat double taps in an interesting way, I'm down.

I really don't like it nor think we need it. I do like the look of the Missile Boat and the potential for SLAM but just don't like the idea of a "Starfighter Lambda Shuttle". Pretty similar to why I don't really want to see the avenger... a better interceptor with different wings and virtually the same stat line sans tractor beams?

I'd rather see a bunch more tie variants than a single "Lambda" variant.

Fly Casual also has the YT-2000 . . .

Also.... We have like 60 pages of ppl wanting it.... If it comes out, will these same ppl be appeased? Or, will it spawn another 100 pages of assault gunboat "fix" ideas?

And with this single post, another 100 pages of Gunboat discussion was born.

Actually what about that scum Otana expansion...

Imperial Y-wing trading turrets and torps for missiles and cannons. Yes we want it and that is the hole in the imperial portfolio it fills.

If the Punisher was to completely disappear from the current X-wing lineup who would miss it?

The people who don't own it and/or have never flown it

I would say obviously the missile boat would be cool, slam, missiles and tractor beam but expensive like the defender.

Tie Avenger should be the imperial A-wing with a stat line of 3/3/2/2 with a dial more similar to the advanced than the defender but at a higher price than the Advanced or A-wing. Avenger is likely a lower priority than the missile or gunboat but would still be cool to have.

Or just give the interceptor or advanced a new "Avenger" title that allows it to take the tractor beam and do something cool with it. It's flavorful, doesn't eat a model slot, and forces choices when squad building (can't take Royal Guard or X1 title).

Without making some 1 or 0 ATT dice ships FFG is running out of stat lines. Wish they would've gone with Long and Wide Bases and Elite Dice to add some differences but too late now.

Aside from the Y-wing bit that's the defender.

People like the ship. I think that's as good a reason as any.

I mean, I'd rather have the Gunboat than Prequel ships, but I'm not sure how big an endorsement that really is.

I would have rather seen the gunboat than the punisher, but I probably wouldn't have bought it, just as I didn't buy the punisher.

You may not agree with his policies, but that's no way to talk about POTUS.

Been playing through tie fighter [pc] and it is a solid ship.

But it doesnt really fit in with the imperial feel.

Give me one real reason we shouldn't have it.

Yeah K-wing and Punisher were pretty skubtastic...

This is an egregious misuse of the past tense. They very much still are skubtastic. The K-Wing has to be one of the most daft and ugly designs in Star Wars.

At this point what would the gunboat add to the game? What purpose would it serve or is there anything unique about it?

Given how many different combinations this game has available to it, with 4 stat variables, the dials, and the action bar, it's nearly impossible for a ship to not "serve a purpose". If we were just worried about ships "serving a purpose" we could have stopped at Wave 6, especially with Rebe; or Imperial ships.

What "purpose" does anything in the game "serve"? I mean, we're about to get a pile of ships from the Rebels cartoon dropped on us. I'd challenge you to describe the "purpose" they "serve" that isn't "FFG wants to sell us more plastic toy spaceships". Why do I need a bright red TIE Defender/Interceptor that doesn't match any of the rest of my ships or look like anything from the movies? Why not just sell a cheaper box with just the cards?

I'd argue that variety is its own purpose. I know I've mentioned this before, which is kinda sad considering how low my post count is, but the only people who should care about whether or not to add a ship are the bean counters at Fantasy Flight Games. "Will anybody want this? Will this cannibalize sales of something else to the point of affecting profitability?" Otherwise, the fact that we see people arguing about whether or not a ship "serves a purpose" in X-Wing makes no sense.

I mean, I get the heavy opposition to ships from the prequels, given how polarizing those movies are in the Star Wars fanbase. But stuff like the Gunboat have been an accepted and positively received element of the Star Wars universe for almost 20 years. I can't even imagine why somebody would oppose them being in the game. You don't have to care about whether or not they make it, but I can't see somebody seeing the Gunboat in Wave 9 and saying "Well, that's it. This game's jumped the shark. I'm selling all my stuff on E-Bay." I mean, personally I strongly dislike the aesthetics of the K-Wing and the TIE Punisher/Defender. Some people have poorer vision than I do, and they love them. It's not like that affects my game experience. It just makes it that much more satisfying when my Raider pulls an unexpected maneuver and overlaps the base of their K-Wing, smashing it to bits.
