Yeah K-wing and Punisher were pretty skubtastic...
Do we really want assault gunboat?
I doubt Disney will allow a non-TIE into the game, even if FFG wanted to make one.
Technically they already have. The Lambda isn't really a TIE. It's fairly ubiquitous. The Gozanti is just an Imperial refit of a civilian ship, and the Raider is outright made up. If the powers that be trust FFG enough to blank-sheet invent a ship and give it the hallowed nod of canon, I can't see them having an issue adding a gunboat that already appeared in franchise IP.
Truth be told, I'd be shocked if we don't see at least one gunboat variant in the next wave. If nothing else, boarding actions and missile boats would spice up Epic something serious.
I dont understand how the 'gunboat doesn't fit' but the 'lambda does'
To me they are very similar stylistically.
short answer: yes
long answer: HELL YES
do it right from the start and we won't need any fix threads

exactly
Edited by EffenhoogConsidering how opinions tend to be so very polarised for the XG1, I reckon the PS4 generic should be named Marmite Squadron

They have not allowed any non-TIE fighter craft though. The only small base ships the Empire has are TIEs. Again, if they were allowed to use non-TIEs for the game, why did the Missile Boat not come out with SLAM in place of the TIE Punisher?

It might not be a case of "not being allowed" to use non-TIEs
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasnt there an interview with Alex Davey where he said that they get a pretty free reign from Disney and the choice of ships mostly came down to the ones that Christian Peterson (FFG CEO) likes ?
maybe CP is in the XG1 haters camp - he'd hardly be alone
If it comes out, will these same ppl be appeased?
Well, no, cos after that there's the Missile Boat
Not sure if "hating" the ship has anything to do with it. Look at the Punisher and K-wing. Neither of these were popular and no-one really thought the Punisher would ever get released at all.

Maybe? I certainly don't recall that from any interview, though that hardly means much. It's still a baffling exclusion when they introduced the K-Wing and SLAM. The only reason that you wouldn't want to pair up the Missile Boat was if you weren't allowed to. There will never be a better time to introduce it.
There's also he ISP-6, the Imperial Shuttle Pod.

FFG get on it! NOW!!!!!
I don't like PT stuff ...
How, just how can you say that!!
Oh, just noticed the ARC-170 was designed by Ryan Church, same guy who did some of the nicest designs for Star Citizen (such as the Retaliator ).
Some of us don't..
Ok it's fine that not everyone like the same things in life but why would someone say no to something like this.
If you doont like something don't partake in said optional thing.
Don't say "no, don't do it" as you just ruin it for others.
I don't like PT stuff but I would still support it because some people actually do like that stuff
It's not my mindset, but it's hardly an unfathomable mystery of the human heart is it?
At this point what would the gunboat add to the game? What purpose would it serve or is there anything unique about it?

Mid-costed cannon platform/multirole craft.

So it'd presumably be cheaper than the defender? But the defender is getting a fix which addresses its major problems so back to what does it add?
I think the gunboat ought to have the ability similar to the one for the defender, where it can fire a primary and a secondary in the same turn. much like a warthog y wing build, except I think it needs a 3 attack primary. this would have to be costed accordingly, of course.
something like this: after making an attack with your primary weapon, you may attack with a secondary weapon. perhaps a systems slot with a gunboat only upgrade that allows this. it's also similar to IG-88's special ability.
Another option might be the ability to link fire a pair of cannons.

Alright fine, i'll take the bait.
The defender is an elite level high cost ship for aces that contains a cannon.
The gunboat, as per my previous answer is a mid costed cannon/ordnance platform. It's possible it might even get a sys slot. And probably a sub-par (ywingesque) dial.
They would handle and fly very differently to defenders, while still lacking a turret slot. Likely they'll have linked cannons much like the defender tractor/ion - or for cheapness maybe they won't. They are more different than the defender than the TAP is from the FO and INT.
I'm new(ish) to the forum but I believe now is the time to say:
"Grab some popcorn"
I'll bring the pop. Or soda depending on where you're from.
I dunno about the rest of you, but where there are duplicate threads, I kinda prefer posting in the smaller one - feels less like getting lost and overwhelmed.

By asking what it brings to the table and how it's different, you are diverging from your original question in the title of the thread.
Do we need a gunboat? Not necessarily. It may be similar to existing craft, although in my opinion it has the potential to stand out in its own way.
But to answer your original question, "do we want a gunboat?" You better believe we do. There are so many people drawn to a non-TIE variant small base fighter and believe that the Starwing looks amazing (myself included). I love the variety of ships presented by X-Wing, all modeled so beautifully and with great detail. I am happy with every new model they introduce, regardless of my feelings on the ship itself, because they are all so darn cool to me. I want to collect them all and even then I don't think I would stop wanting more!
On a different note, I understand those who don't like the gunboat (we can all have our opinions, right?). But what I don't understand is people who bash those who want a gunboat. Why can't we hope for one of our favorite ships to be released in this game we love? Why is that worthy of scoffing?
