New Epic Ruling on Obstacles

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

This one slipped my attention when the latest revision of the Epic Tournament Rules came out:

Each player places six unique obstacle tokens, gathered from any X-Wing product, next to the play area, for a total of 12 obstacles. Then, the player with initiative chooses two of these obstacle tokens and places them into the play area at the same time, within range 1 of each other but not at Range 1–2 of either player edge. Then, the opposing player chooses two of the remaining obstacle tokens and places them into the play area at the same time, within Range 1 of each other but not at Range 1–2 of either player edge or any previously-placed obstacle token. The players continue to alternate in this way until all 12 tokens have been placed

So now, not only are debris fields legal, but so are the unique obstacle tokens that came with the Raider.

Cool!

I didn't know that that debris field wasn't legal for tournaments and have been practicing with it all the time. I love that one. I wonder why it's not viable?

Only for Epic play. For 100 Point Dogfights, it's still from the two Core Sets and the Decimator/Outrider.

Yes, this has been the case for quite some time. We checked the rules back in November-early December when we had an Epic tournament, and we could use every obstacle available.

This was last updated in September, and last I heard the obstacles that come with the Raider aren't legal as they are only for the Campaign that come with the raider. I've sent Organized Play a message to clarify it, but we've been playing in our league without including the those Huge obstacles. It'll be difficult in some ways to put those completely within 1 of each other if two Huge obstacles are placed together.

Am I understand this right? It sounds like I can place my asteroids/debris in contact with one another.

Aren't those ALSO debris tokens? Just different ones? That's what the wiki identifies them as.

My understanding is that there are currently 12 Asteroid Tokens in the game(6 from Core Set, 6 from TFA Core Set) and 9 Debris Tokens(3 from YT-2400, 3 from Decimator, 3 from Raider).

Do HUGE ships still remove all obstacles they overlap?

Do HUGE ships still remove all obstacles they overlap?

Yes... but they take a face up damage card for each one they overlap. The overlapped obstacles are removed.

The question really is with the obstacle tokens that come with the Raider. I've sent FFG Organized Play a question regarding this, I'm hoping to get an official ruling and clarification. My stance is that the ones that come with the Raider are only for the Campaign that comes with the Raider and are not tournament legal for epic.

Only until the latest revision came out (which as it turns out was 4 months ago to my shame) - prior to that the same section in all previous versions said "Both players place the six unique asteroid tokens from their core sets next to the play area,"

Now it says "Each player places six unique obstacle tokens, gathered from any X-Wing product, next to the play area"

The updates were less than a month apart so I must have missed it

It seems to be a deliberate inclusion of the Raider obstacle tokens.

The standard tournament rules specify which expansions contain legal obstacle tokens ( core sets, Decimator and Outrider) - if FFG wanted to say the same for Epic they would have simply copied the same text.

I'll wait until I get an official ruling back from FFG before I start allowing them in our Epic League. Their intent and wording have cause confusion in the past.

Here is the official response I got back from FFG, in summary the Huge Obstacles that come with the Raider are legal for Epic play only.

In response to your rules question:

Rules Question:

In Epic, according to the tournament rules for legal obstacles it says obstacles from any X-Wing product. Does this include the Huge Obstacles that come with the Imperial Raider? Or are those obstacles only used during the campaign? We have been playing by the assumption that it is only the core set obstacles and the VT-49/YT-2400 debris.

In Epic, you can use the obstacles provided in the Imperial Raider in addition to obstacles from core sets and the VT-49 and YT-1300.

YT-2400?

Yes the YT-2400 (Outryder), there are no debris tokens that come with the YT-1300.
