I made some asteroids!

By Attackmack, in X-Wing

And the result turned out better then I could hope for!

Thanks to some great tutorials and ideas from youtube and forums, these are magnetised and can be swapped/removed at will.

I did all 12 asteroids from the two core sets, total time spent likely around 6 hours with painting and fine cutting the plastic bases. Well worth the time IMO

The question now is, do I print/glue some graphic on the base, paint it completely black or leave it transparent?

They actually look really cool too.

(I admit it, I was hoping for a comic with Tarkin just blowing up Alderan saying "Hey Vader, I made some asteroids!"). Clever using the bases that match the original pattern - really like that.

Pretty cool. You have a link to the tutorial?

Nice work! :)

NICE! The best 3-D rocks I've seen in a while. Personally, I hate the ones ppl make that do not use original tokens as a base (so overlapping isn't a prob)

very cool

Basically these two contain all you need to know :)

Thanks, thats very nice of you!

Yes the intention is to have these replace the original "templates" altogether. Thus the removable pegs so overlapping and measuring wont be hindered.

This is why im now unsure if im going to paint or print the original asteroid graphics on them or not. Transparent looks okay, and allows viewing the starfield below, but they do reflect some light and doesnt blend in with the rest as good as id hoped.

Matte black would solve this of course!

I ended up painting the bases black and coating their underside with a thin layer of rubber spray.

Now they stay put when adding/removing the pegs so accidentally moving them around wont be a big issue.

I still contemplate printing the asteroid art onto the bases but ill play a few games and see how I like it with only the matte black.

So until later, heres some pics of Vader chasing the falcon into an asteroid field!

nicely done. I have no artistic skills whatsoever so this would be way out of my ability range.

I have none either, during the years ive played several different miniature games and my armies always end up looking so bad I dont want to field them.

The fact that X-Wing and Armada is prepainted, although a bit lacking at times, is a big deal for me.

But trust me, making asteroids like this doesnt require any artistic feel at all. Spraypainting styrofoam and drybrushing is a skill-less art (at this level anyhow).

Anyone can definitely do it, with the right materials and a bit of time :)

Looks good! Cant wait to see your debris!!!

Nicely done. I like that they just sit on top of the current asteroid tokens so that for overlaps you can just move them. I would buy a set of these without thinking twice.
