Imagine a World Where You Control the Expansion Releases

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

Imagine a world where you controlled the X-Wing expansion releases. The original core, TFA core, the Millennium Falcon, and Slave 1 have all been released, but nothing else. People know that the next ship to be released is the Ghost, but they don’t know about anything else. There is no scum faction, there is no Decimator, Imperial Shuttle, or even Tie Interceptor or E-Wing. There is no C-3PO card, the only 360* ship is the Falcon, and no one has even seen a giant epic ship. You know all this exists, and it will be released to the public eventually – but only when YOU say so and according to YOUR agenda. You’re in charge.

I say all that because that’s the world I live in! I am the patriarch and king of my home, and I play this game with my huge family and a solid group of friends. At this point I don’t see any of them buying into the game – just playing it a lot at my house. I get a certain amount of fun money every month and I’m going to be steadily buying and buying and buying X-Wing ships. The very next one to buy, without exception, is going to be the Ghost because we are all huge Rebels fans. So I need something to balance that out, but then what?

So, back to the original question, this has been released…

Original Core and TFA Core

Wave 1: Millennium Falcon and Slave 1

This will be released:

Wave 2: Ghost and ??

Wave 3: ??

Wave 4: ??

Wave 5: ??

Etc….

So in what order would you release all this X-Wing awesomeness? What is your wave 3, 4, 5 and why?

It's easy if you try...

Because I have hindsight, Scum and Villainy would have been a W1 release, Mil falcon and Slave 1 would both be scum/imperial/rebel. (Scum Imp for Boba (same rules) Scum/Reb for Han (Same rules) They would be ruled as mutually exclusive.

Other than that waves 1-4 would be the same. 6 where scum vil was would instead be the deci/2400 wave. 5 would be the gunboat/R41/T-wing wave.

I think Its pretty good, I mostly bought everything in its order of realese, I think they did a good job, but I don't like that Imperial Boba's ability is not nearly as good as Scum Boba's.

GUNBOAT.

Really, there's no other answer.

Wave 2:

Gunboat

Missile Boat

TIE Avenger

TIE Defender

TIE Bomber

TIE Interceptor

What, did you want some other ships to blow up?

Fine.

Next wave the rest of the rebel canon ships.

Wave 4 scum. The good scum, like SOTE ships and bounty hunters, none of that Galaxies crap. And waves have like 6-8 ships in them. Cause it's awesome.

I would "release" the TIE Adv. Prototype at the same time as the Ghost, since they're both featured in Rebels. You could do an all-Rebels wave and release the A-Wing, B-Wing, and Gozanti at the same time, as well.

Next, I would release the things from A New Hope. The X-Wing and TIE Fighter packs, the TIE Advanced, and the Y-Wing (essentially wave 2 as it was), plus the TIE Bomber.

For wave 3, I would release everything you need for Scum and Villainy: the HWK-290, the Z-95 Headhunter, and Most Wanted. At this point, Scum has access to everything in the Most Wanted box (3+1 ships), Rebels have access to 7+2 ships (they're in the lead, obviously), and Imperials have access to 4+1 ships plus the Gozanti.

To bring the Imperials up a bit in different ship count, I would release the TIE Interceptor and Imperial Aces next, plus the TIE Defender. (Rebels 7+2, Imps 6+1+1, Scum 3+1)

Next up, I would release the "EU" ships. E-Wing, TIE Defender, Kihraxz Fighter, and M3-A Interceptor. (Rebels 8+2, Imps 7+1+1, Scum 5+1)

After that, a wave of "weird" ships. K-Wing, TIE Punisher, TIE Phantom, and StarViper. (Rebels 9+2, Imps 9+1+1, Scum 6+1)

The "big ship" wave could be as it was - YT-2400 and VT-49 Decimator - plus the IG-2000 and YV-666 packs for Scum. (Rebels 10+3, Imps 9+2+1, Scum 6+3)

Finally, I would release the remaining Epic ships. If a Scum huge ship is announced any time soon, I would wait until that releases to "release" the others, though. (Rebels 10+3+2, Imps 9+2+2, Scum 6+3)

I want to hold off on the Scum for awhile because my family members are 4, 6, 7, and 9 years old (besides my wife of course) - and I think Scum introduces some mechanics that they aren't ready for (though my gaming adult friends could of course). Now, they are little, but they're smart and they can play what I have real easy, and every time I play I'm introducing new parts of the game. Variety and theme, as well as relative simplicity is a big deal. The Scum will come, but probably not till around Christmas time or next year.

I think in a couple months I'm going to make a big order on Coolstuff (free shipping!) and get the Ghost (huge fans of Rebels), HWK-290 (it looks cool and can support!), Y-Wing (the 4 year old loves the 360*) for the Rebels, and get Tie Interceptor (Soontir!), Tie Advanced (Vader!), Tie Defender (it looks cool!), and Tie Phantom (cloak!) and one other $10 ship that I can't decide on.

That's all tentative though, I might change my mind by the end of the day. Yeah.

This thread is great, I'm definitely going to be referencing it when I make my decisions, thanks again.

What would I do if I was in control of the releases?

What would I add to the game in a world where certain things didn't exist? First I'd add the things.

Then...

I would embark on a soul crushing cash grab that saw the release of every two bit toy ever branded with the Star Wars logo. I would even release knock-offs as individual models, say take a reprint, call it another name and cast it in FFG resin and make it the most powerful ship in the game. Give it boost. I'd channel all the funds from my misadventures into a Swiss bank account under another name, and all the fan hate I would direct at the original version of X-Wing. I'd say stuff like, this is the way Jay Little wanted it really, he just didn't have the technological gusto to go to Russia and steal his own shabbily remade product. I'd go to church and be a model citizen too and I'd give up drinking. Then I would publicly admonish people who drank whenever questioned about my reptilian manipulation of X-Wing and it's fans for my own personal gain. I wouldn't answer the question about my business, just shame people who drink. Then I'd open a Children's Hospital, really hi-tech and well funded, but totally devoid of toys and all the walls are painted that awful green.

GUNBOAT.

Really, there's no other answer.

Is that the Imperial Shuttle? I'm new, sorry!

Ah, so there is no gunboat.

I used to play the X-Wing video game, and especially Tie Fighter. I do think I remember getting blown up by a gunboat after not taking it seriously at first.

I also remember the Tie Defender was ridiculous.

There is, alas, still no Gunboat.

We are still hoping for that and the DX-9 to make appearances.

Atmospheric game mat to go with the Bespin mat.

Cloudcars

Jabba sail barge

Those smaller barges in RotJ with Jabba's barge

Snowspeeders

Skyhoppers

Other airspeeder stuff too, but those are what I'd like. And it's for ATMOSPHERE not ground warfare.

Awesome! That's some great advice there, @GrimmyV! I'll get one in the next couple days! Thanks!

Boba Rick, surely you've purchased things between January 2016 and December 2017. How'd it go?

If I had seen this post way back when, I'd have suggested that the only thing I'd keep out of the game are TLTs.

If I had seen this post way back when, I'd have suggested that the only thing I'd keep out of the game are TLTs.

Fantastic.

My X-Wing life went like this:

1) Picked up a core set and played it with my daughter.

2) Started picking up a few expansions here and there (this post). My major addiction was still Imperial Assault.

3) I roofed my house a couple months later. This was the game changer. I tore three layers of shingles off my roof mostly by myself and re-roofed it myself. I got up early in the morning before work and back up there again after work. All in all, it was a ton of work and one of the hardest things I've ever done. That is when I discovered X-Wing podcasts. I listened to I'm guessing I listened to about 120 hours of X-Wing podcasts and I started thinking more and more about playing in a tournament.

4) In December I played in our local regional tournament. I got to meet @blairbunke and got curb-stomped by Chris Norris and Kyle Miedel. It was amazing and I've been hooked ever since. I finished 2-3 running Hera and Norra.

5) I played in three more tournaments since then and I have usually finished right around the middle. I came fourth in a store champ and got those sweet range rulers. My super hot wife has now started playing and is pretty good with Miranda/Dash.

6) Life is good and I can't wait for the Gunboat and Phantom 2 to come out. I have bought 1 of almost everything (except epic - I have no epic ships), but I have found my deepest abiding X-Wing love is Norra Wexley.

You should really buy an epic ship if you can afford it. My super scientific findings show that epic ship size and amount of fun directly correlates.

I know..... I know. It's true, all of it.

But a long time ago in a far away place I determined within myself to NOT buy epic. I actually haven't played with all my current ships.

If I got epic it would be for the upgrades, those Rebel Transport cards and pilots are just sick.

First I release ships from the original trilogy (Y-wing, TIE Adv. TIE Bomber, TIE Interceptor, A-wing, B-Wing, Lambda).

Then ships from Rebels (Phantom, Shadowcaster, Protectorate, TAP, Defender) and Rogue One (U-Wing) that had significant screen time.

Then ships from the new movies that had decent screen time (Silencer).

Then if I'm really feeling charitable, a few ships from the original X-wing games (Gunboat, Z-95) , Rebel Assault (TIE Phantom), and Shadows of the Empire (YT-2400), but only because I'm nostalgic for them.

No comic book ships, or SW Galaxies, or other EU stuff. Sorry Dengar -- no ship for you!

Why? Because a fan of the visual medium should be able to walk up to a game being played and easily identify it as Star Wars. I looked across five tables of play the other day and aside from one Falcon and some Defenders there was nothing a fan of the movies or TV shows would have recognized as Star Wars.

edit: Oh, and only two ships per wave, a wave every four months. Stretch out the experience.

I don't know about reordering the releases, but I would try and take some mechanics in past waves and put them in earlier waves.

For Wave 7 I would take the reload action from Wave 12 into TIE Punisher and K-wing. I know it won't help them much but still I find it ridiculous that a dinky little Ma-3 Scyk can hold more missiles than a TIE Punisher. As for Extra Munitions I would have put them in Wave 3.

Atanni mindlink would have been a Unique EPT that applied a condition card instead of the limit 2 per game.

Contracted Scout would not have an EPT, and Jumpmaster would have been another 5 points instead of the hole punch nonsense we have now.

But considering I am mostly a collector and Epic player (I've given up on the stupid meta that all the scum sucking wanabe Fel but only the lousy pilot skill 5 nerfhearding claim to be arcdodging but only a losers that can't dodge a bomb that claim it is the only thing worth playing on reddit, forums and even podcasts you know who you are<_<).

But the buisness model is prone to accretion and all the problems associated with it so this was bound to happen. I think a new business model needs to be adopted. One that allows unintentional interactions and unnecessarily terrible option can be removed and replaced with better ones. A production plan where the models remain but the cards in the game can be replaced.

I'd actually do the first two waves like this

Wave 1

Rebels

A-Wing
Y-Wing
Ghost

Empire

TAP
TIE Fighter
TIE Interceptor

Wave 2

Rebels

X-wing (Including Scarif stuff as well)
U-Wing (K2 is a must)
Falcon

Empire

TIE Advanced
Lambda
TIE Striker

Wave 3

Rebels

YT-2400 (Iron Squadron included)
B-Wing

Empire

TIE Bomber
Slave 1 (Dual faction)

Introducing the Scum faction

Most Wanted pack, including: Y-wings and the Falcon, including Scum Solo
Slave 1 (Dual faction)
Z-95

So, by the end of wave three:

Rebels have

A, B, X and Y wings
Ghost
Falcon
U-Wing
YT-2400

Imperials have

TIE fighters, Interceptors, Advanceds, Adv. Prototypes, Bombers and Strikers
Lambda
Slave 1

Scum has

Z-95, Y-Wing
Slave 1
Falcon

Really depends on the type of people you are playing with. If you have people that aren't Star Wars fans at all, anything is possible. Just pick whichever ships seem to add the most to playing.

For casual Star Wars fans, take the media they consumed as guideline, kind of like you already do. This is going to mean sticking to on screen ships in flexible priority.

If they have some deeper connections, again anything goes, but prioritised by the media they enjoy. For a fan of new canon books, the ARC-170 introduces well known characters. A former Star Wars Galaxies player will be delighted at all the hutt cartel ships. And of course if someone is a fan of TIE Fighter, the soon to be released Gunboat will be spot on!

I think it was done well, but as far as the Scum faction, I'd done things differently. Rather than giving the Empire the Firespray at first (great cannon idea but not a long-term game idea), I would have added a card to the Lambda that allows an empire squad to "hire" a named bounty hunter (list them, the ones that stood on the deck in Empire Strikes Back) in some way; that would have been such an interesting and iconic game mechanic.
