"Mr Hornblower sir! Its the INDY"

By Funk Fu master, in Star Wars: Armada

So I thought I would try to make a few less favorite titles work on a Rebel list, and give a B-Wing swarm a go now I have picked up a second Rebels Fighter pack.

I took (398pts)

MC80 Command

-Dodonna

-Independance

-Adar Tallon

-Boosted Comms

NEB b Escort

-Yavaris

-Raymus Antilles

AFmk2b

-Bare arse naked

Keyan Farlander

3x B-Wing

2x X-Wing

Jan Ors

I was against 2 VSD1s, 2 GSD1s (notably running projection experts) and a Raider1

Mission Hyperspace assault (Yavaris, Keyan and 2 B-Wings)

I wont batrep, however my general thoughts and observations were:

1. I thought I was in for a hard slog, as I was out-activated by 2, there was a lot of hull to chew through

2. Yarvaris and B-Wings live for hyperspace assault. They came in on turn 2 and was right up the rear of his flagship VSD, double tapping

3. Independance is great for getting squadrons where they need to be. Coupled with Adar Tallon, you can deliver B-Wings up to distance 6 to a target. Its not just the initial surge, Indy is great for picking up stragglers on the far side of a fight or now expanding cloud of debris, and ramming them down the throat of another unsuspecting ship.

3. MC80 at speed 2 is far more versatile than a VSD, as you can put a target on your quarter, stiff arm away and still get a full double arc shot

4. If you are going all ships, you need to spend the points on getting those second anti-Squad dice, I only lost 1 x-wing by the time the game ended, at turn four with only a non demolisher and VSD on the board and facing the wrong way.

5. Raiders and ordance experts are brutal to fighters, but made of tissue paper

+9000 for the Hornblower reference. A 'Master and Commander' reference would have been similarly acceptable. In fact, there really ought to be a Rebel ship title of "Surprise"...

How would you rate the use of the MC80, compared to, say... could you fit two naked AF2s in for the total price of the Independence? How do you think you would have fared with that build?

Alternatively, how do you think things would have been different if you'd had an MC30 in place of the naked AF2? Or a couple of Corvettes?

Not saying you should have had those things, I'm just curious. I'm still trying to weigh up both the MC30 and the MC80 at the moment.

Having long touted Independence myself, there is no substitute. You cannot put a price on being able to position B-Wings so aggressively. I understand the temptation of bringing the more point efficient AFII, though. That title is probably the only reason I bring an MC80. The problem is B-Wings and the AFII just don't get along.

As for an mc30, that is something I highly recommend. The torpedo frigate works great with Yavaris by providing cover to the vulnerable flanks.

You are using my favourite titles.... I didn't know they were unfavoured.

I don't think anyone will dispute the power of Yavaris, even if they might question its ease of use. Independence was maligned immediately after the preview reveal. A number of regulars here, myself included, have since had a second look and fell in love with it. The initial stigma, however, remains for those that have not seen it used well.

All my lists have one. ;)

I love Independence as well. There is no question it is a thing of beauty with Bwings, though I am uncertain how things will shake out in this new squadron heavy environment.

Independence is one of those super niche titles that can be game changing when properly used, but its high skill cap keep it from seeing as much use as say, Home One.

But killer-B's are a fun way to blow stuff up.

Out of curiosity, what fighters other than B-Wings would the Independence benefit ? YT-1300 ? Scurrgs ?

Well, it benefits B's and YT-1300's the most. It still benefits speed 3 fighters, it just benefits them less.

Whether or not the cost of the title is worth a measly +1 speed (with no attacks) is your call. Personally, if I've got the Indy that means I'll be running B's and maybe YT-1300's.

Anything but A-Wings and YT-2400s.

Never discount the extra movement possibility. Especially with something like an Intel using HWK-290... It gives you that little bit further slingshot for one turn, which may mean being able to leapfrog over a ship to hit its weakened but far side rather than ploughing into its reinforced shields when you give them the squadron command next turn...

If there was going to be a Surprise, I'd vote for it being an MC30C. Aubrey would love a ship with that design, its silly fast and heavily gunned. :D

And all short ranged, like his first command Sophie with her carronades (basically sawn off 18 pounders)

2 naked AF2s might just fit, but you wouldn't have the same capability. You could not affort ackbar, or gunnery teams. Nor the abilities of boosted comms, Adar or Indy. Plus being large prevented his VSD with a tractor beam from slowing me down.

Swapping out the lone AF2b for a MC30 might work, but they NEED there titles to survive, then they get expensive. I used the AF2 as a circling shark to keep targets at range
