Command Dial and Token Timing

By Hawk007, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Can you only activate a Repair command dial (or token) before you attack? I was playing a game and my opponent attacked my ship then maneuvered and rammed me. We both drew a facedown damage. Then he claimed he was able to use his Repair command (value of 4) to repair that ramming damage he just took.

In the rules, ship activation has a few steps: Reveal Command, Attack, and Execute Maneuver.

Under Effects and Timing on page 5 it says "An 'After' effect occurs immediately after the specified event and cannot occur again for that instance of the effect."

Under Command Tokens it says "Command tokens can be spent at the appropriate times"

These imply that there are times you can and cannot use specific command tokens but not necessarily when that time is.

The timing for a repair command is revealed on page 3 under Commands "Repair: Resolve after revealing the ship's command dial."

The key word is "after"....

If you reveal a repair command Dial you must use it before you enter the next ship's step (Attack). If you decide to use your ships repair Token, it too must be used before you move on to the next step (attack)....right?

It makes sense too because on page 5 of the Tournament Rules it talks about Missed Opportunities. "If a player forgets to use an effect during the timing specified by that effect, he cannot retroactively use it without the consent of his opponent." They basically say if you want to be nice you can...but if you want to be competitive you can too. If someone forgets, it's pretty much up to their opponent whether or not they are allowed to still use a certain command.

After means Immediately after.

Page 5, RRG, Effect Use and Timing:

• An “after” effect occurs immediately after the specified event and cannot occur again for that instance of the event.

Then Commands tells you exactly when the appropriate time to spend those commands:

Page 3. RRG, Commands:

• Repair: Resolve after revealing the ship’s command dial.

You have those already.

What you have not gotten is that A Repair Dial and a Repair Token are BOTH a "Repair Command", so they happen at the SAME TIME, or rather, happen in the same space of time, insomuch that if you are going to do BOTH, you have to do both AT THE SAME TIME.

For "Did you use the command?" Purposes, the Game makes no distinct ion between a Repair Command Dial, and a Repair Command Token. They are both a "Repair Command".

For which, the appropriate time, is immediately after the command dial is revealed.

Yep everything is laid out and your opponent was incorrect. A Repair command (token or dial) is executed immediately after the reveal of the command and prior to any moving or shooting.

Which sucks. I wish it was after you attack but before you move. I always forget to use it because I'm waiting for that juicy shot or fancy fighter shenanigans, and I forget I wanted to get a shield back.

You can't do it after you attack, but you can do it after you activate squadrons. Both the repair command and the squadron command take place at the same time, so it's up to the owning player what order they happen in.

Caveat: I don't have my RRG in front of me, so it's possible I'm wrong (it happens every once in a while :) ). Go check for yourself if you're interested, it should be on RRG 3-4 under COMMANDS.

No, you got it right... Repair and Squadron are both the same timing - that timing being "After you Reveal your Command Dial", so indeed, you may determine their order yourself.
